I'll probably see the new Harry Potter movie next week. I'm not a teenager, so I think I'm going to avoid the openning week crowd and I have a friend that has been dying to see Capote or Walk the Line.

To add to the discussion of Potter v. Christianity. I'm a Christian and I know there are plenty of books about how bad it is, but I don't see anything wrong with it. If there is, then there is a problem with Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings, and Chronicles of Narnia. The last two of those were written by Christians.

I haven't read any of the books, but saw the first three movies. I thought the first movie was a really good movie that had great potential. The problem with the first movie was that it came out the same year as the best fantasy movie of the last twenty years(Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring) as well as the best teen angst movies(Donnie Darko). It is the best of the three. The second movie worked until the ending had Harry fighting a giant CG snake with a sword. I didn't like the third movie. I kept hearing how dark it was and it never seemed to be. Also, it seemed to forget all about the rivalry between the houses. The ending was just a deux es machina. I'm hoping for good things from the the guy who made 4 Weddings and a Funeral and Donnie Brasco.

SHE'S READ ALL OF THE BOOKS. I HAVEN'T, SO FOR ME NOTHING SEEMED TO BE MISSING. I THINK THAT GOBLET OF FIRE IS THE BEST HARRY POTTER MOVIE TO DATE.

Great, thanks for the info!! I love this series!

Harry Potter is way better then LOTR in many respects, it has proper foreshadowing and is well thought out, where as Tolkien just made it up as he went, and not that I don't love reading entire pages about grass growing, and what not, but its nice to read something where the writer understood the concept of brevity and leaving out the boring stuff

Dont get me wrong, I love LOTR, but I find Potter to be much better written in the sense of a compelling story told in an exciting fashion, and its a lot more modern and thoughtful then RIngs and its christian overtones and and racist undertones. A product of its time and place, I won't hold that against the dear professor, but it doesn't change the fact.

Either way, His Dark Materials is waaaaaay better then both Potter and Rings

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that would go against my Catholic beliefs, or any other Christian beliefs for that matter. Heck, my mother has read them and enjoyed them too. The only people that seem to have a problem with them are the ones that don't know anything about them.

Sure, they use magic, but the magic in the books is no different than Gandalf and Saruman's magic in LOTR, really. Only the bad wizards use the bad spells, the students in the schools just learn how to magically unlock doors and things of that nature.

Yet there is a member of this very forum who will not let his children see the movies or read the books untill they are 18. 18!

And yet they will probably be allowed to read "Catcher in the Rye" in freshman or sophomore year in high school (like I was required to do for English class). I kinda find that funny.

i hated that book, its so damn depressing

Would I let my seven-year-old read it? Probably not.
ok, what about when you is 10,12,15? Surely they shouldn't have to wait until they are 18.

um, wouldn't that book be Mein Kampf?

Well, I finally saw it today. Much better than I was anticipating, I have to say. MY only gripes:

1. We don't get to watch the Quidditch World Cup

2. It pretty much gives away Tom Riddle Jr. from the get-go.

3. The music. John Williams's absence is far more painfully obvious than "Prisoner of Azkaban". The birth of Voldemort scene could have used much better music.

Other than that, very well done. I give kudos to Mike Newell. His directing sort of has a Terry Gilliam-ish feel to it.

I've seen it twice already. Definitely the best HP movie so far! None of the stuff they cut out was necessary to the plot, unlike POA, and it was all tied together very seamlessly. If I may address your gripes, Nanner...

1. The first time I saw it, I almost wished they had cut the whole World Cup thing since they seemed to rush through the entire sequence. The pacing seemed too fast. But on second viewing, maybe I'm more used to it, but it didn't bother me as much.

2. Don't you mean Barty Crouch, Jr.? If so, I totally agree. There's no mystery to it this way. Plus, he was very much different from the character in the book. And, finally, even though it would probably make the movie lag to do so, I kinda wished they would have explained his backstory more. What with him and Sirius in the last movie with neither of their escapes being explained, Azkaban seems like a very easy place to escape from in the movie world.

3. Um... unless I'm mistaken, which I very much doubt in this case, John Williams wasn't missed in Prisoner of Azkaban because he composed the music for it. But I have to disagree. I loved the soundtrack for this movie more than the other three, and I want to snag a copy of it as soon as possible. I love what they did with Williams's existing Hedwig's Theme, though.

**SPOILER**

This is really embarrassing, but Cedric's spirit's line of taking his body back to his parents has always made me a bit misty every time I read it in the books, but that whole sequence is so sad in the movie that I actually did cry, as did my girlfriend. Not vocally or anything... it's a theatre, it's dark, nobody has to know. ^_~ But when Harry comes back to the maze and the band is playing its cheery tune, that's the most effective part for me. Just... chilling.

**END SPOILER**

I love how this movie prominently featured more of the minor characters, like Fred, George, and Neville who had already been amply developed in the books by this point, especially Neville, but who had been tucked away to the sidelines as much as possible in the previous movies, especially Neville. My only problem with that is that I wish there had been a line between Harry and Dumbledore that Frank Longbottom was Neville's father and what his and Alice's fate had been. After going to that much trouble of setting it up (Moody showing the Cruciatus Curse, Neville next to the stained glass window), Karkaroff's reveal seemed to be a bit too quick for the casual fan to get. I'd like your opinion on this, DAYV, as you've only seen the movie.

And I liked all the stuff at the Yule Ball. It just does so much to show that, magic as they are, they're still teenagers with normal teenage concerns. Made me miss the torture that was high school.

But awesome movie. I'll probably go see it a third time.

Sorry, I meant Crouch, not Riddle. Wasn't thinking properly.

I didn't realize until about an hour ago that they completely abandoned the Rita Skeeter plotline. They introduced it, but never did anything with it.

Plus, Gary Oldman didn't get any screen time!

Saw it. Loved it. Star Wars must now pass on the crown to the Potter series for best movie franchise since those mediocre prequels came along. I will be seeing this again, maybe with my niece, she's a fan and the movie's not too violent.

highlights:

The whole thing. It's fun but not overflowing with spunky jw music like the first two or kinda morbid like the third.

In fact, i didn't really feel like I was watching a movie until the credits came at the end... because It's that good. Keep this Newell guy around, WB.

Question: Was it this book that harry wins a whole bunch of money and gives it away to the weasley twins? If that was cut from the film, it'd be interesting to know why since it's a big deal for those characters.

edit: and what the hell. Hp influences kids to become satanic? lol... that's what halloween is for...

Yeah, they did abandon the Rita Skeeter plotline for the most part, opting instead to relegate her to just a minor nuisance. So for that purpose, she was funny enough. Another thing I didn't even think about them cutting until they got to the maze was the Blast-Ended Skrewt subplot. And I think that's a sign that the movie was condensed well when even people who know the book don't notice everything that's missing. I had just finished my preparatory reading of the book a few hours before I saw the movie, and I didn't even notice this until close to the end.

One mistake I did notice, though, was that the movie refers to Peter Pettigrew exclusively as Wormtail, even though that name was never attributed to him in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie.

And I have a question. Anybody notice this movie-only character? It was a little red-haired kid who looked kind of like a younger Ron and acted like Ron's version of a Colin Creevey, and his name was Nigel. I'm wondering why they added this character in. Is he a relative of a cast/crew member? I think I noticed in the end credits that his last name was Melling. Isn't that the last name of the kid who plays Dudley Dursley (who, coincidentally, didn't show up in this movie)?

And finally, yes, it was this book where Harry gives his thousand-galleon prize money to Fred and George. I'm sure they'll wrap it up somehow if they decide to cover it all. But the more important endstory plotpoint they skipped was the formation of the Order of the Phoenix and Sirius being vouched into the group by Dumbledore. Can't wait to see how they deal with that, but something tells me they'll just have them at the House of Black without any explanation as to why everyone's suddenly palling around Sirius.

see thats the one small problem i had with this movie. the screen-play could have used so much work. there were so man instances where they could have added a line or changed a line a little to give a bunch of back story. you guys all pointed out little tidbits that could have been done like the 1000 gallon prise, nevelles parents and so on. on that jsut kinda go me was in that very last scene when barty jr was cornered, and everyone was jsut leaving the room snape is looking down on him and talking. snape could have so easily have said something like, "I expect the dementors will be giving you a kiss when they see you again". indicating that barty was dead. rather the just sayin "back to askaban to for you."

but yeah that was my only beef, its going to be interesting seeing how they do all this stuff now though cause the coming books are starting to rely highly on stuff that has been developed in the previous books, e.g. the nevelle story line is going to be very key at the of the books.

Never read the books. I simply do not have the time tho I love to read. Sometimes I actually get pissed about it.

Anyways, I have seen all the movies and some a few times (true I could have read instead but....you know..they're movies and its easier to get started). I liked the first one because it was the whole introductory story and like LOTR:FOTR, it was more based around telling about all the cool stuff as well as a story. I remmebr the second one but only a little because I only saw it once. I liked it of course but serious;y nothing sticks out except the end because well....it was a really big snake. Third one was cool but even tho I didn't read the books I knew much backstory must have been skipped. It had a non-sensical overall plot but hey...fantasy. Was still fun and more dark (serious actually) and had some cool effects.

I just got done watching GoF two hours ago and on first impression.....very very impressive. I liked so much about it. The acting was utterly amazing from people this age.....it puts the PT actors (all who have more acting and experience) to shame despite their high status. I put this directly on this new director. I vaguely remember his other movies but to get this out of teenagers is incredible IMO....rather realistic and emotional. The characters really start o develope...Ron starts to get angered by Harry's fame, Hermoine starts turning into the semi-sister like girl and also an object for the two guys, andHarry just keeps getting more mature (no shit huh?). The plot was actually pretty cool and see Voldemort (spelling?) was actually a little creepy, especially the quick shot he has as a small fucked up...thing. Like they said at the end, I got the big feeling things are gonna change. Do the books get way more serious and dark? Lastly, the effects in this movie are up to most of Episode 3. It was all shot/rendered/whatever so perfectly. The whole lighting, the mood, the atmosphere, the colors, just really great.

This is truly one of the very few series of films that gets better on each part. And like how it sort of matures both in look, feel, and plotlines with the way it's audience in general does.

9/10

And hell no I won't be going into the whole religions debate. I spent an entire month studying that to write a long documented essay on censorship and Harry Potter and it's just too soon for me to go off on my opinion.

Hey look, a bear!

yes the books get ALOT more serious and dark after this one. there are some pretty bad scenes in book 5 and soem very shockin scenes in book 6 these last 2 books are not the best for kids under 12 since one they problely wouldnt get all the stuff in them and the themes are darker, more complicated and mature.

Heh, the first thing my gf noticed was Ron's arms in the beginning of the movie when he was in bed. The kid's been working out apparently.

I also noticed that the minor characters got pushed up to the front a little bit. My gf insisted that they were there all along and had about the same amount of time in the prior movies compared to this one. Neville had a MUCH bigger part in this movie than in the first one and he "saved the day" in the first one.

The acting was also superb. Interaction between the characters were realistic...although, my gf and I did feel some parts of the movie were rushed. Especially at the ball...we felt there might've been a scene missing in there.

What's the deal with the trendy long haircuts? I mean, if you had ginger hair like Ron, wouldn't you wnat to shave it off, not grow more of it? Th erason I am moaning is becaue I have long hair, and I had it when it wasn't so cool, and now iot is cool again I look like a trend follower, when you all know I'm a setter.
