Too be honest after looking at the new 2004 Holo, the original was better, more old skool and had better dialogue. I think Clive's performance is way better than Ian's and it's not cheesey like the new scene.

Ian is best, IMHO. He will always be convincing. Plus, having him in ESB ensures continuity.

Ian's performance would have been alright (not good, just alright) if they hadn't changed the lines. But they did, and the scene is too long because of it.

I prefered Clive Revil for the holo as well, mostly because it was short and to the point, and much more mysterious. They should have kept him for the Emperor.

It wasnt Ian greatest performance compared to his usual ones IMHO, and his delivery to me wasnt as good as usual either. I didnt really mind the new dialogue but preferred the old dialouge but Clive Revill does a good job and for me a better performance and a has better delivery.

I think a big reason Revil's performance was better was because, back in 1980, he had to establish the character of the Emperor with only those few lines. It had to be powerful, or we wouldn't believe that the Emperor was really that powerful or evil. When Ian filmed the scene, we already knew what the emperor could do, so he could phone it in, and we'd still all know how scary the emperor was.

Well, one good thing about Ian McDiarmid in that scene is that it eliminates my images of the Emperor dancing around singing "You've got to pick a pocket or two."

The thing is though, he did something few are able to do. He made exactly the movies he wanted to make. Nothing was holding him back, and he had full creative control. No studios were telling him what people wanted to see, and even when they were, he told them he didn't care, becuase he was telling his story. And I can respect that.
Author

But there's a difference between what he was capable of doing and what he actually did, both then and now. The reason he doesn't get respect here is because he doesn't respect what the films used to be.

I like the new dialogue for 2 reasons:
1. It was cool to hear Anakin mentioned by name. It was a call back to Luke and Obi-wan talking about Anakin in Ben's house. I would have enjoyed this line a bit more if it was in the original version before we knew Anakin would have been played by Hayden.
2. The Emperor's dialogue of 'search your feelings, you will know it to be true' is a nice bookend with Vader's confession at the end of the film.

Revil's performance wasn't bad, but it was only a vocal performance. The old woman's on scene performance was just as flat and dull as McDermid's

Good point, Sluggo. I never really thought of it that way. I haven't watched the 2004 in so long.

2004 emperor looks like a turtle, and neither looks nor sounds anything like the ROTJ Emperor, who is clearly the best. I don't know who they hired to do the Make up on Sith and the 2004 ESB, but they must have been smoking crack, and sharing it with Ian, causing him to forget how to act. Just like I cannot see the CGI Yoda and the puppet Yoda as the same character, I cannot reconcile the 2004 or Sith Emperor with the ROTJ Emperor. I try, but I can't.

War does not make one great.

If you notice the on the 2004 ESB DVD, they still have Clive Revil name listed in the credits.

I guess we can atleast say we have the O-OT on DVD when it comes to the closing credits!!!!

I agree. The first time I saw this I thought that the emperor looks nothing like he does in ROTJ. I can even forgive his looking really different in ROTS, because it is over 20-25 years later that we see him again, but not in ESB. The dialouge I don't mind too much, but I have too much of a hard time getting past the crummy makeup.

No worries. He'll probably get a cg upgrade for the next release anyway, just like that $hitty jabba cartoon in ANH. Lucas doesn't give a warm goblet of fire about high quality concerning the films that made him a billionaire as long as people keep buying up these 'unfinished' independent films. Lol.

I would rather have seen Clive's emperor over Ian's. Ian was great, don't get me wrong....but I love Clive's delivery. There was some menacing evil there.

Yeah, that's what I've said too. Clive is really mysterious and foreboding. Shrouded in dark. You want to know more! With the Ian performance, he's no longer at all mysterious. The scene is sleepy and too long, and everything's just there on the table, as if we're watching a conversation between Luke and Han.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I belive Ian McDiarmid as the emperor is somewhat superior to Clive Revil's, BUT... I disagree with messing up with the film for all the reasons we have discussed before, so, I was always against having him there. I still remember seeing the screenshot of Ian McDiarmid as the emperor in ESB on AICN (along with Hayden on ROTJ), and thinking "Now this has GOT to be fake"!

What I enjoyed about Ian McDiarmid in ROTJ is how young he was playing that part, and thanks to his acting and voice (and make-up) he looked like a fragile old man (well, sort of). Kinda like Max von Sydow in The Exorcist, you know? It's like "he was HOW old?!" Also, when the prequels came up he was the right age to play Palpatine, so it sort of worked out well.

I prefer Ian McDiarmid's image being used instead of a woman superimposed on a chimpanzee (that's actually what it was before), but it is too large, like all the holograms in the PT. I think Clive Revil's lines should have stayed no matter what. Or at least Ian saying the same lines.

Does anybody know the new dialogue? I have a feeling it gives away the 'I am your father' revelation too early. A friend of mine watched Star Wars for the first time (order IV, V, VI, III), and figured it out from that scene.

Not only is Ian's performance kind of blah and phoned-in, but so is the look of the shot. It's way too brightly lit, and the whole job looks as if it was done in 5 minutes on someone's lunch break. They could've at least matched the look of the previous hologram effect a bit better.

The original surpasses it in every way-- if I never knew what the image was, I would still think it looks pretty cool. I don't care if it was a woman/chimp-- it's a mysterious image attached to a mysterious voice that didn't need to be changed.
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

It's kinda hard to know that, since most people now are aware of the Vader - Luke thing, even those who have not seen the film. I guess it could be guessed that Vader is Luke's father from the new dialogue, yes...
