The Laserdisc of Starchaser is probably the worst pan and scan job in home video history. (With the possible exception of the early 80’s video transfer of THX 1138.) It’s actually zoomed in as well as cropped.

Very cool. From time to time I do a search for it as 3D. Best I found was a multi-part on YouTube at low res. I hope you can get this backed as I’d love to see it again. I saw it in a theater for a friend’s BDay when it first ran.

That youtube video is how I first became aware this was originally in 3D. If anyone wants to buy the ebay print, I can certainly let them know where to send it to be scanned so we will have even more sources available 😄 It’s gonna be a fun project.

Yeah, I’d love to see this project realized. Starchaser is one of my favorite animated films. The movie that ripped off star wars and then star wars ripped it off years later . I suspect George Lucas got the idea for Darth Maul’s getting chopped in half from this movie and thought it was so obscure and forgotten that no one would notice. I have the dvd 2d release of Starchaser and watch it often. Guilty pleasure.

I just watched it for the first time. A solid 7/10 movie. Great animation, scenery, locations etc. It could be straight from the SW universe and actually feels more like it than anything Disney’s put out. The story is a bit weak but still enjoyable.

I ask because I may have found a digitised version of the original 3D (not a modern 3D conversion) on another forum, I’ve not downloaded or compared it, but the uploader has listed it as original 3D, and they are pretty strict at how films are listed. It’s presented as side-by-side 3D, which makes me wonder if it’s from this AI upscaled YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxITnW6KPPU
Obviously, a proper 4K scan is better than the AI upscale. Does anyone have the means to do film scanning that could take this project over? (What are the 4K77-83 team doing these days? 😉)
