Lucasfilm is a corporate entity, with different arms and interests for different purposes, designed to protect and create as much merchandising as possible. of course they're going to try and legitimize all of their product for people like you obsessed enough to care about the canonity of an entirely fictional universe. It means you buy more of it. But Lucas himself, the guy who wrote the story, the screenplay, and directed the movie, "Revenge of the Sith" says that Death Star is THE DEATH STAR. That's your answer.
