I hadn't had time before, but I just want to say that I just watched your edits of I and II after getting them a little while ago from Rikter. There aren't a lot of changes, but the ones that you made are very nicely implemented. Great job, and I look forward to getting hold of III in the future.

One observation, though; it seems as though you use a lot of hard cuts in your edits between scenes. Actually, all of them (I think) that you changed seem to be hard cuts. I'm curious whether this an artistic decision or an inability to do the soft transitions on your system.

If it's the latter, than if you were ever planning to do a revision of your edits, I'd be happy to do any transitions for you and put them up for download. In fact, I could do them for you now if you wanted...

It's mostly due to an inability to do them with the software I use. My purpose in using Womble is to not re-encode the video, though I'd definitely like to do soft wipes if I had the ability. After all, there are the rare spots where I perform a fade of one sort or another. (There's in in AVITF; look for one in ROTS as well).

I figure when I make the super-mondo version in hi-def MPEG-4 (whenever that screwed-up set eventually releases), I'll make the point of figuring out the soft wipes. By then the encoding technology should be so much better that it won't noticibly degrade the video quality on re-encoded sections.

Meanwhile, feel free to "wipe-em" if you can do it. I'd love to know how to do it myself.

ADM: From my limited knowledge of Womble, doesn't it allow you to do wipes, and then only re-encode the localized regions that require it (leaving video segments alone where there is no change/need to re-encode)?
There should be minimal if any degredation under those conditions.

Yes that's true, but the wipes in Womble look terrible. Not professional.

The movies have wipes that are a little "thicker", where this one is a hard line that moves across the screen.

BTW, I'd love to be able to "wipe" too.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Hal 9000 hit the nail on the head. I actually used these wipes some in Austin Powers where I could get away with it, but they look worse than hard cuts for something like Star Wars. But you are right, Doc, in that it will just re-encode the regions of video where change has been applied. It's always sensible to cut just the changed frames into their own region as a result, limiting the re-encoding to the smallest amount possible.

ADM - I just read the changes you made for the Ep3 Edit - am now feeling a like a little kid again anticipating the release of this Edit.

Well in and many many thanks for completing and sharing your Saga - from a certain poin of view...

Call me picky, but isn't the audio on A Musical Journey PCM 2.0 with a Dolby Digital 5.1 track?

Never mind. My slow work computer was taking forever to download the graphic. My bad.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I don't believe so as ADM specifically requested the 2.0 PCM label on the audio.

Not to change this back to the actual topic or anything...

But is it to late to get on the pay-it-forward for the dual layer'd versions of everything? I just picked up some DL discs and can now afford to pay if forward.

Thanks,

Either ADigitalMan or Hal 9000- I'll try to post a couple of my soft transitions at full quality for you to sample.

Maybe my relative ignorance of mpg encoding is showing itself again, but it would seem as though if you did a soft wipe on an mpg, output as uncompressed AVI, and then re-encoded with a high quality encoder at a constant bitrate that exceedes that of either of the two clips you're joining (which is my process), that you wouldn't be losing any quality whatsoever. At least, I can't detect any difference between the re-encodes and the official DVD. Am I correct on this? I'll have to post some files to show you what I'm talking about.

That sounds like a sensible approach Trooperman. I look forward to what you can pull off.

I am part of the PiF program cause I am stuck on dial-up and can't download anything.

Anyway when I got my discs I had tested them and noticed they were sort of choppy and almost froze at points on my computer, but at the time I thought I just needed to reboot or something (low RAM). I have tried the discs on my computer, xbox, and a couple set top players and all of them either have problems playing smoothly or will freeze up and stop playing. I had copied them for a friend (paying it forward of course ) but he had the same result on his xbox and set top player.

After talking to ADigitalMan about it he suggested that I post here and see if anyone had any solutions? Is there any way for me to repair them so I can continue with the PiF program? I'd hate to have to get a new set of discs from someone, 5 discs is a lot when someone already sent them to me. I don't want to make more copies if they are going to not work properly.

Sorry to hear about the discs you received...it may just be a problem from the particular person you got it from. If you still have his/her contact information, get ahold of him and tell him right away! If his burner is dying, he'd probably like to know as soon as possible.

I'd also like to jump on the bandwagon and ask if anyone is still paying it forward with this release. I know I'm new here (I've been a lurker, but have hesitated to post), but hopefully someone is willing to take a little faith on a newbie.

Many thanks!

AndrewWiggin, I LOVE your handle, buddy. Having met OSC in person back in '87 or so, it's nice to meet a fellow fan of Ender.
