Star Wars Rebels Recut - A Fanedit TV Series — Page 9

I’ve got a new plan of action currently. Although I haven’t finished the full 4K release I’ve noticed some fundamental mistakes in how I’ve prepared the Rebels episodes to be edited. These mistakes have resulted in a lower quality visuals then the show (by a small amount but once you notice, you can’t unnoticed it) and stereo audio. (Until a DM I honestly thought Rebels wasn’t in 5.1, so time to fix that!)

To fix this I’m going to create a V4 of this show. I’m hoping this version will become the most complete form of the edit. I’ve also gotten some DMs asking about the differences in versions. Because I haven’t been to on top of posting my full changes, I’ll be trying to change that now and begin posting here with every new episode release with it’s changes from the previous episode.

If I’m going back to reedit the show (again!) what should you expect?

  • 5.1 surround sound.
  • Small file sizes with no visual or audio downgrade.
  • 3 Download options - 1080p, 1080p recolor and 4K recolor. (no need for compressed or uncompressed)
  • Revamped intro cards including the new helmet sequence, further polish on intro text (if required) and an episode name card (not sure why I never put this in).
  • Much smoother transitions between cuts (by editing in 5.1 I’ve given myself more flexibility in audio smoothing). My goal here is to make it so you don’t know anything has been cut!
  • Adjustments and fixes to end credits (if required).
  • Realigned subtitles (for the completed subtitles) and new subtitles (for the uncompleted subtitles).
  • A new 4K version which should be of a higher visual quality.

I’m pretty excited for these changes! If you have any further suggestions please give them to me! I want to make this edit the best version of the show possible and a complete experience to watch through! 😄

I’ve got an example of my new completed introduction sequence (as it is on the first episode). I’d love to get any feedback so I can give it as much polish as possible!

Viewing Notes

Episode is not the most essential to the plot and is one of the weaker episodes overall. It could be skippable. The episode resolves the mistrust between Zeb and Ezra thanks to the first episode and builds some interest into Sabine’s back story. The episode also introduces a plot relevant location. As the Ghost crew have been active before getting Ezra it’s not totally important to be shown the plot relevant location here prior to the later episode.

Is it feasible to divide this second episode into two parts? The first half (Fighter Flight) is… quite mediocre, to say the least, but the second half (Out of Darkness) is… quite alright IMHO; so it would be nice to not have to go through fifteen minutes of boredom on rewatches.

Also, taking out the part where Zeb and Ezra DO try and fix the ship (just didn’t notice the fuel thing) made things seem… awkward in here, like they were just lazing around and blatantly lied to Hera about having fixed the ship they knew she would be taking down to the planet in a few moments; it’s like they didn’t care she’d potentially die on a defective vessel or something lmao.

Thanks for the feedback! 😃

Originally they were two separate episodes in my edit but both were too short after cuts and thematically share a sense of trust building between crew members. (I’ve thought about cutting them together a bit but Zeb and Ezra need to be on good terms before the second part can begin)

In terms of not showing them fix the Phantom. I took it out because it feels too childish. The exchange I’ve kept with Ezra and Zeb fighting chopper feels enough. My thoughts for adding that scene back in… They still hide the lack of performing a diagnostic to Hera either way. And they still complete repairs either way and send Hera and Sabine off to potential doom. It’s also not the focus of that part of the episode, as once the Ezra and Zeb ark is complete, we switch focus onto Sabine and Hera.

I also feel there’s a sense of implied work, you can see Ezra with a tool but due to the dysfunction you can get a sense it wasn’t done properly. To me, the exchange in my edit doesn’t give a sense of blatant lying.

That being said, I am interested in further feedback on this episode! As it is, I feel it works.

I think my main feedback for the Familial Bonding episode is the jump between ending the Fighter Flight arc (which I like as is by the way) and moving into the Phantom scene is a bit jumpy. That’s where the episodes naturally break, but I don’t know if there’s some transitional shots that can be recovered from somewhere to link the two by showing the Phantom being launched or something in between? Maybe some kind of “onto the next mission” voice over?

The only other part I feel is jumpy is the very beginning of the first episode cutting to Ezra on the rooftop, although I’m not sure what/if anything can be done about that.

Overall I think you’ve done fantastic work g00b, I hope I don’t come across overly critical. I’m looking forward to each V4 episode as they come out.

Thanks for the feedback Daiyus! All feedback is welcomed by me. It helps make the edit better and helps me grow as an editor. You also don’t come across overly critical!

I agree that it can jump sometimes (especially these episodes BC Ive essentially cut half of them!) I thought about a bridging scene or something but I couldn’t find anything worthwhile so settled for a wipe. Wipes tend to signal a passage of time in Rebels, so that’s good enough for now I guess.

Ive also changed that cut with Ezra on the roof a few times 😂. Originally, it was a fade but because of cutting I’ve got so little footage there it wasn’t worth it. Eventually and reluctantly, I chose to just have a regular cut so you can see the grand inquisitor.

For both cuts, I’d love any ideas/bridging scene ideas, to use to smooth them out.

Having re-watched the official Rebels introduction (first time I’ve done that in a while!) I think you just need to include the bridging shot of Ezra on his bike following the Star Destroyer, then swiping onto the rooftop before the logo hits. I think the problem would be trying to fit all that in with the Grand Inquisitor and the opening with the planetside Star Destroyer, rather than the original space ones.

Perhaps opening directly to the Grand Inquisitor/Vader, without a Star Destroyer set-up and then flowing into the planetside Ezra/Star Destroyer intro with the bike, then wiping to the rooftop? I’m not sure what would be best for pacing or thematically, but I do think going from the bike to the rooftop somehow would smoothen the introduction.

Maybe the Vader/Inquisitor scene would actually work better to close the episode instead of opening it? IMHO makes way more sense, cause after Ezra had his “awakening”, Vader is telling the inquisitor about Palpy having felt the danger of the children of the force thing.

Some great ideas Daiyus and Psy! I’ll go back and have a play around with these and see if what we get is a better product!

I’ll try some different locations for the Vader and Grand inquisitor scene. Not just the beginning and end. (Maybe I could fit it into episode 3???) And I’ll post back what I come up with to see what you all think. 😃

RELEASED S01E01 - Spark of Rebellion V4.1

Changes

Okay! Placement wise for the Vader and Inquisitor scene. I think it needs to stay where it is. I’ve got a few reasons for this.

    1. I can’t find a place where it seems I could locate it where it makes sense. It needs to appear before Kallus reports the rebels to the inquisitor and there’s no good break in the story for this.
    1. We need this scene to A) set up that Ezra is force sensitive and B) build extra tension for when Kanan uses his lightsaber at the close of the episode.

I’ve added back Ezra on the speeder bike (great suggestion Daiyus!). I think its placement works really well with Vader’s appearance as the music builds dramatically (originally why I cut the scene as early as I did). Having that crescendo in the music move into Darth Vader on screen makes a lot of sense. This also now helps explain why Ezra is suddenly in a different location after the Vader Inquisitor scene.

I’ve reinstated the fade transition from the Inquisitor opening his eyes to Ezra. This was the original transition in the show but to a different point in time. I’ve modified it to take longer then in some of my original cuts and I think these changes definitely smooth out the opening section of episode one!

Awesome! Sounds great. Can’t wait to see it in action.

Update: I really like what you’ve done with this. You’re right, the music works really well going from the bike to Vader, and the fade transition from the Inquisitor to Ezra is much smoother. Great work as always g00b.

Glad you enjoyed the changes Daiyus! Thanks again for the great suggestion!

I’ve been trying to use AI to create an extra line for Hera for episode 2 of the edit (to bridge the two episodes of the original I’ve merged). I was trying to get her to say “We’ve got a new mission from Fulcrum. Ezra, Sabine, I need you to prep the Phantom.” But unfortunately, the AI I use can’t seem to replicate her voice.

I thought I’d put this out there incase anyone can make this dialogue or knows any other lines from Rebels I could use in its place. At this stage I’m unable to bridge that gap so the episode will stay as is.

My intent was to insert this line as the Ghost ship takes off.

I’m also open to any other ideas about how to improve this episode or how to smooth the transition between episodes.

Author
Time

It could get a little ugly, but your best bet may be to mix and match her different lines. That could also get disjointed based on the tone and inflection of her voice.

Here is a line from S1, Ep. 15:

“Maybe this mission doesn’t make military sense. But Kanan is family. And we’ve all lost enough family to the Empire. So rescuing him makes sense to me. I’m not ordering you, any of you, to come along. But you need to decide now. In or out?”

You could find her mentioning Fulcrum elsewhere and get a line like this: “Fulcrum is ordering you to come along this mission. In or out?”

Time

New intro for episode 1 got a million times better, nice!

However the transition from the Ginquisitor to Ezra on the rooftops (2:25) is still a little off-putting, and I’m guessing it’s because of the audio - goes too quickly from the ominous soundtrack to the casual stormtroopers on the radio. Maybe if you’d “slowmo” the Ginquisitor’s face just for a couple seconds while the music finds its pace to go a little quieter?

I’ve experimented with making new lines from existing ones before and honestly I don’t think it works to well. For now, I’ll keep an eye out for any bridging scenes that could be inserted and/or hope someone who reads the forum could give me an AI generated line I could use haha.

I’ll have another play with the audio blending here. Not sure I’ll be able to get it nicer but if I can I’ll put the update through. Not sure if it’ll look right to slowmo the Inquisitors face but I’ll keep experimenting. Thanks for the suggestions PsyGemini! 😄
