This 2007 Archival Edition - For Real Or Not ???

Author
Time
Okay...I hear a lot of talk about some sort of archival release of EVERYTHING Star Wars movie-wise on DVD whether it be on Blu-ray or HD-DVD...my question is...

Where the hell have any of you heard that this is going to happen?

Is there some kind of OFFICIAL statement that this is going to happen or is this just some HUGE assumption that many of you are making?

I'm pretty damn sure that 2007 will see some kind of special release, it being the 30th anniversary and all, but how do you know it's going to have the whatever new versions and the original versions on it?

Seems to me that a lot of people are banking on these "archival editions" and I think they ain't gonna happen. Everything GL has said indicates that those original versions are history, gone, ka-put, nowhere to be found or seen.

Seriously, unless someone can produce an official quote or statement, then this is strictly rumor only and no one should be counting on it or getting their hopes up. Hope I'm wrong and we do get this kind of release, but I ain't getting excited about nothing yet till I get an OFFICIAL statement and see a box art and pre-order info.

Actually, in "archival," I was referring to an archival edition of Lucas' definitive versions of all six films, which I'm VERY excited about. This edition would include allm minor tweaks, major changes, and such to make it his vision. It's almost a given he will make more changes and the 2007 bersion will be the final version. No, I doubt he has the intention to ever release the OOT on DVD. They're merely early drafts in his eyes.

Time
How do you even know that's going to happen?

Still making a lot of assumptions, IMO. I've learned from the last six years NEVER to assume what Lucas is going to do, cuz he'll do the exact opposite.
Author
Time
Well it's clear that he has already made changes to TPM. And McCullum seemed to think that George hasn't finished tweaking yet. Who knows, lets just keep our hopes up that the OOT is in there somewhere. There is certainly a market for it!

I disagree. The strong sales of the 2004 DVD release tells me that there ISN'T a market for it cuz the average joe doesn't care what version they have. To them, it's Star Wars and that's it. They're not distinguishing between SE or OT or whatever.

If the mass majority wanted the original versions, there would have been a lot more grumbling on the issue. Most reviews of the 2004 set barely touch on the issue and the ones that do just associate the need to have these versions as part of the "geek factor."

The market of the OOT is a niche market. We're that market and we are a small number compared to the number that will just blindly buy whatever GL puts out. And LF will bow to the numbers.

I think that everyone is making assumptions that Lucas will do something for the 30th anniversary. Beyond that, no one really knows. The problem with the Archival edition is that Lucas is already re-releasing the DVD set this year, and everyone is making fun of it for "double-dipping" Unless it is Blu-ray/HD-DVD or whatever new techology comes along, I'm not sure it will happen. Yet more changes won't really be enough to sell more DVDs, either.

I think the 30th anniversary will see a rerelease of all 6 movies in theatres, possibly with more changes, and possiblyy in 3D. Blu-Ray releases will follow, but not straight away (to avoid grumbles of 'double-dipping' as you call it, which is quite a nice term).

War does not make one great.

As much as it pains me to say, this is sadly the case.

But: do not underestimate--the power, of marketing.

Keep in mind for most DVD buyers, the idea of "value-added" material is still huge in their purchasing decisions. The movie itself is almost secondary to all the special features that will be added. Couple that with the fact that most consumers don't care if the movie has added elements in it, but it's damn sure one of the sore areas for the entertainment PRESS, who has now almost surpassed the entirety of the internet with their "greedo shoots first?!?" cracks and such. If original editions were bundled as an EXTRA on a giant box set, you can GUARANTEE the press is going to make a HUGE deal out of it, so much so that people, even if they didn't care, will think "hey, I'm getting an even BETTER deal than I thought" and the combination of the two will more than likely push a couple extra boxes out the door, whether the consumer really WANTS it or not. They'll be told it's worth having by the press, and the price will convince them they're "getting a deal" and there you go.

Amen, Bizzle. The public generally doesn't think about stuff unless prompted by the media. Cynical? Perhaps, but that is how it seems to be. If the marketing machine gears up, they would sell a ton of the 'value added' retro-versions of the movies.

Isn't it amazing, that you can't get the original versions of the most popular films of all time? It's still a weird concept.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

I saw in a yahoo poll that 60% of the people who responded wanted the O-OT on DVD. Last time I checked, 51+% is a majority. I think we have the upper hand.

And of course the reviews for the DVD were high. This is what we had been waiting for. Until we realized what was really on it. The cleaned up film version was so sparkly that we were blinded by the fact that Lucas altered EVEN MORE to the original trilogy. Now the hype is starting to wind down and people are starting to take notice that, "Maybe this isn't as good as I thought it was going to be."

Look at the hype around this issue on TV. Have you guys ever seen that South Park episode where they try to stop GL and Steven S. from ruining Indiana Jones next?
Or that Robot Chicken episode where Steven remakes Jaws "because it wasn't his original vision?" Or how Vader tells Luke all the stuff that doesn't make sense in the Prequels?
Or the American Dad episode where Stan escapes by focusing the mobs attention on "The man who convinced George Lucas not to release the original theatrical version of Star Wars on DVD?"

This isn't some underground movement here people. The media is starting to take notice.

Naaah, the fact extra stuff was added was touted in almost all those magazine interviews. It was typically the lead-in to the poll you cited. "Lucas again has tinkered--which is interesting since according to this poll, 60 percent of people would like the originals on here as well" But it wasn't hidden, certainly not by the reviewers and writers, even the TV critics and such.

I wouldn't call "Robot Chicken" and a 2 year old South Park episode "hype" either. but people ARE aware. And LFL Marketing DOES want the originals out there. They've been fighting for it for a good 4 or 5 years, I know that. They just can't get it done. Whatever this "Archival Edition" that (supposedly) closes the book FINALLY on the Star Wars movies is their best chance to make money on those old versions, which is what they want to do. They'd LOVE to be able to sell you another version of Star Wars.

Oh, quit taking yourselves so seriously guys.

I respect those of you that held out and didn't buy the 2004 DVD's based on your convictions - you are to be commended for your dedication, at least.

For the other bandwagoners - and you know who you are - if Lucas pooped and slapped the Star Wars logo on it, you'd still buy it.

Just to head the Prequel Bashers off at the pass: Yes, I know you feel that the Prequels are Lucas' equivalent of slapping the Star Wars logo on poop.

Was that the list that appeared all over the net a while back?!? I certainly hope so. Those were some cool ideas! Do you know if those were seriously officially leaked?

ya theres 2 lists that leaked from LFL about 3 years ago and appartnately all those hcanges are happening

Heres the stuff that apparently being changed

Episode IV: A New Hope

01. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader's first appearance on Princess Leia's ship.

02. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.

03. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.

04. There's a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.

05. In the Cantina, the Duros (green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.

06. The bleeding arm on the floor in the Cantina has been replaced with a non-bleeding arm because it's now canon that lightsabers cauterize wounds.

07. The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored. Yay!

08. Jabba the Hutt has been given a makeover and Han no longer steps on his tale. Yay #2!

09. In place of R2 wobbling down the stairs to the Falcon's hangar, a CG R2 navigating the stairs like he does in Attack of the Clones was added.

10. The white boxes around space ships have been removed and new CG shots have been added.

11. The scene of the Falcon being chased by the two Star Destroyers was modified. The Falcon now does spinning moves, avoiding the Star Destroyers' fire.

12. When the Death Star Destroys Alderaan there's a new scene of Yoda's reaction to the disturbance in the Force that is created by all those deaths and then it cuts to Obi-Wan reacting to it as well.

13. The Dianoga has gotten a CG makeover and were are now able to see more of the creature.

14. The Death Star's paneling and computers have been slightly altered to show similar displays to those in the prequels.

15. The words "Tractor Beam" with Aurebesh lettering.

16. More stormtroopers have been added to the Death Star.

17. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for use with all the stormtroopers. Boo!

18. The Obi-Wan/Vader duel has been spruced up. It is much more epic and there is much more movement. A modified version of Duel of the Fates is being considered for the scene.

19. The Death Star plans that are taken from R2 have been updated. When the Rebels are reviewing the Death Star plans they look similar to the plans we see in Attack of the Clones.

20. The Death Star battle is much more epic with more Tie Fighters and more Rebels being blown to bits. We get to see old Naboo starfighters being used by the Rebels. ???

21. There's a new scene (shot during Episode III) where Darth Vader goes to Coruscant and lands his ship in the same building Count Dooku does at the end of Attack of the Clones. Except now the building is all fixed up and it is now Palpatine's palace. He meets with Palpatine to ask for forgiveness for his failure and inform him of a new potential who is strong in the Force.

22. Chewbacca now gets a medal. Yay #3!

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

01. The taun-tauns are now CG.

02. The battle of Hoth is much more epic. We see the Imperial ships land on Hoth and release AT-ATs. The AT-ATs have been sped up a bit. There's a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers featuring new ships and vehicles.

03. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers. Boo #2!

04. The white boxes around space ships have been removed.

05. The slug monster is CG.

06. Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor. The conversations between Vader and Palpatine is now longer and features a few connections to the prequels.

07. Yoda's face is now animated in CG allowing more expression of emotions yet his movements remain the same. Also two deleted scenes featuring Yoda instructing Luke have been restored.

08. A new scene was shot in which the stormtroopers, after they capture Han, Leia and Chewie, bring Vader the box containing C-3PO in pieces. Vader orders the stormtroopers to bring the broken droid to Chewbacca's cell so that he can fix him.

09. The lightsaber effects have been redone in certain parts.

10. Luke's fall from Cloud City has been reshot against bluescreen using a stuntman.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

01. Jabba the Hutt is now a combination of the puppet and CG.

02. The Rancor is CG and looks disgusting as ever.

03. Yoda disappears leaving his clothes behind like Obi-Wan now.

04. The ewoks are now mostly CG and there are a lot more of them.

05. The plan is to insert the love theme Across the Stars when Luke is talking with Leia about their mother.

06. Temuera Morrison's like before is now the voice for Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.

07. In the battle of Endor there are thousands of Ewoks and they are more vicious than there midgets-in-suits counterparts. More bite the dust now.

08. White boxes around ships removed.

09. The black blotches around Palpatine's face are gone.

10. Some of the lightsaber effects have been redone. The shadows that the lightsabers made on the floor are gone.

11. During Anakin's death scene it starts with a sad rendition of the Imperial March and slowly evolves into Anakin's Theme.

12. Sebastion Shaw who played Anakin when he was unmasked has been replaced with Hayden Christenson in make-up to make him look older.
Anakin has much more dialogue. He apologizes for the destruction he caused, he thanks his son for turning him back to the light, he tells his son to rebuild the Jedi and he says he loves him and his sister. Just before he dies he says, "It is finished...".

13. We see more planets celebrating at the end of the movie. We see an aged Jar Jar, who is now the leader of the Gungans, on Naboo celebrating with the people of Naboo and the Gungans. We see an old Watto, who is now unable to fly, sitting in a hover chair cheering on Tatooine. During these scenes Across the Stars plays transitioning to the victory celebration music at the Ewok tree village.

14. Anakin's spirit is now played by Hayden Christenson with make-up to make him look his age. He looks on proudly at his son Luke

theres another list w/ technical stuff like lukes lightsaber is blue in the falcon agian, vaders eyes aren't red on occasions in ANH, the sound of lukes saber turning off doesn't happen anymore in ESB and then there some preqaul stuff like Jar jars part have been cut down and his dialoue changed for TPm along with yoda is all CGI in TPM and a couple things for AOTC also

That list was written by internet superstar Barry Woodward, who is now a Firefly/Serenity fanboy to the point where I think Whedon himself has him over for dinner.

nothing on that list is real. it's a wishlist. I was online VISITING the messageboard he first posted it at WHEN he posted it.

Geez, I'm really looking forward to this. Makes me even wonder why we still need the OOT (sorry.)

All right, I'll still help you guys support the OOT, even though I've all the official DVDs. But when this "Definitive" version comes out, and if all films turn out great, I might show more respect for that. Lucas still needs to show respect for his older work though.

Heh, funny. Whenever I think about liking the new stuff more, something pops up in my head telling me to keep with the original version .

You know what? I had a mate who still hasn't watched any of his 2004 DVDs, and when I told him that Hayden's ghost replaced *ANAKIN'S REAL GHOST* at the end of ROTJ, he didn't believe me! So I told him to watch them, and boy was he pissed! Then I told him about the Temeura Morrison overdub on ESB, and he got even more pissed! Then I told him to act on his anger and sign the petition! It was hilarious, yet sad. I wonder how many other ppl haven't watched their DVDs yet...

we will not know the status of the saga 6 film boxset until the format wars between HD-DVD and blu ray die down a bit.

Who can guess which format would suit lucas needs better, or which he would personally get behind?

I bet millions of people bought the dvd thinking they were the originals since it was stated nowhere on the dvd's that they were the special editions, albeit with more changes. George Lucas advertising them as the original star wars trilogy is a pig in a poke. Anybody who bought them should return them and demand they get their money back.

I was so mad after I bought mine and opened them I could not return them to best buy, I did'nt want to make a scene and get arrested so I got three good beer coasters.

Even with the changes there are mistakes in the soundtrack on star wars, regardless of what lfl says, the colorization is all wrong and too saturated, and the sabers are fu**ed up.

The mattes on the spaceships have not been fixed and even are more niticeable after lowry cleaned them up, the most glaring and it ruins the movie is the gunport sequence with the tie fighters in a new hope.

There is even a scene where part of the frames are messed up in the speeder bike scene in jedi.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Wont the TV series be around and the 3-D versions being released in the cinema. I am sure some sort of boxset will be released to cash in on these and the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars with other 30th anniversary merchandise as well..

My gues is that right before the 3D Clone Wars comes out, Lucasfilm will release the complete season sets of the Droids and Ewoks animated series to cash in, along with the definitive box set of the six films. Then, ijn 2008, he'll put the same box set out again right before the live-action series.

That's a false assumption. Even WITHOUT the battle between Blu-Ray and HD (and it's not even much of a battle anymore) being decided, this set is STILL going to come out on DVD. There are too many DVD players for it NOT to. There's no way he makes a huge all-inclusive box set and doesn't port it over to the format that has THE MOST installed units in the home. This (still a theoretical) set would make a significant amount of it's cash from regular DVD sales, not blu-ray.
