I must have seen this movie at least a hundred times. Almost as many times that I have seen Star Wars.

Many of my codenames are plays on words, plays on numbers, references to pop culture and current events, or all three. And I’m a big Python fan. When I’m secretly worried that my machine translation is going to come up with bad translations, that anxiety comes out in the codename 😉

Speaking of which, version 14.0 was a bit rushed, to make it out in time for Despecialized ROTJ 3.0. I had plans for a lot more machine-translated languages, but those had to be deferred, and will show up in a future release.

The bigger news is that while I was initially conservative with machine translation, I am at least initially getting good results with languages that I considered longshots. Specifically, Georgian. Georgian isn’t really even somewhat related to any other major language, so I picked Russian as the starting language – simply because some Russian colloquialisms and other terms may have worked their way into the language, and “problematic machine translations from Russian” may be the sort of strangeness that Georgian speakers may already know how to accommodate.

How do I measure if the translation is any good? Well, if the translation round-trips from Russian to Georgian, and then back again to English, and it’s still intelligible, I figure it’s probably okay. In this case, it’s not just intelligible, but usually pretty solid (and sometimes merely intelligible too). So assuming this keeps up, I may be able to add some very interesting languages.

Sadly, it appears that it may be more the quality of the machine translator for that particular language than any proximity to an existing translation, so I just won’t know until I try, and I may not be able to predict which languages will work. For example, Faroese is very close to Icelandic, and that attempt failed badly in the early stages.

I thought you may be the best one to ask:
Is there anyway, maybe a program or something to change a subtitle
in a .MP4 container to default without re-encoding?

I am adding some subtitles to a few films and encoding as .MP4,
while I check the “default” box before I start, the end product
HAS the subtitles but they must be selected.
I’ve seen films were this is not the case, so I know it’s possible.

I know this off-topic, but others here dealing subs might find your
answer useful.

Sorry, I’m a disc person who’s just recently branched out to MKV. MP4 is one step beyond for me, but I’ll gladly open up the discussion to anyone who does know.

That’s ok! After downloading a Subtitle editor, which by the way,
couldn’t change the default flag. I got all absorbed with what I ELSE
I do with subtitles! Wow, that’s a deep “Rabbit-Hole”.
I begin to understand your interest better!
I made some formatting changes that could not be saved as .srt
and .MP4 won’t accept .SSA files, so…
I’m back to .MKV, while not fully supported by Windows (why?) it is a
MUCH more versatile format, while MP4 can only have one audio track
and one subtitle track, the subtitle can only be added during encoding.
Muxing extra tracks into a .MKV is easy!

Now I’m wanting to back and re-do a film I subtitled last night,
but THAT encode took 6 hours! I guess that will be a .MKV too! 😉

Keep in mind, Despecialized ROTJ 3.0 has a bug where one of Jabba’s subtitles is missing. If you’re using Project Threepio’s “native” English subtitles, this presents a problem, as they do not subtitle things that are already supposed to have onscreen subtitles. This is not a problem for “full” subtitles, which subtitle everything.

That’s always great to hear! Keep in mind that my Vietnamese subs are based on those fansubs you found (just re-timed), so I can’t speak for the quality of the translation. If you see any room for improvement, feel free to drop me a line!

I actually joked about doing one for Frink’s edits. I also thought about doing OT.com meme subtitles (come on, you know you want to see “I care!” in the wrong scene, and Han calling Greedo “Gringo”), and semaphore subtitles.

It’s hard because the Klingon script is more-or-less exclusive to the Klingon language, so you’ve still got to do the heavy lifting of the translation. And asking for the Klingon word for lightsaber could be asking for a fight.

Tengwar, on the other hand, could easily just transliterate English subtitles. Yes, I’ve thought about this way too much.

I first checked the subtitles for this project when I saw DEED v3.0 and I have a question about the Japanese language.
Who is the translator of these subtitles? There are two main types of Japanese subtitles, but this subtitle falls into neither category. And, not a few mistranslations. Is it possible to change to 2020 Blu-ray subtitles in the next version?

The Japanese translations have been through A LOT of changes over the years. We started with the Japanese GOUT, where there were actually two sets of subtitles (I believe theatrical and home video). But a problem with these was that they were available only in graphical form (discs use graphical subtitles). In order to fully incorporate them into the project, we needed to OCR them, and the OCR software we’ve used tends to be tuned for Latin or Chinese characters. Which means that the kanji came through pretty successfully, but the kana was pretty bad. So we had someone manually correct them, but due to other problems they were just the theatrical subtitles, which were not as good translations (for example, “Return of the Jedi” was still called “Revenge of the Jedi”, which is cool but wrong). They also contained lots of Furigana, which didn’t work well in subtitles at all.

Anyway, this background is just to demonstrate why we later threw all of that work out, and went with some 2004 Special Edition subtitles in text form that we found. So we knew these subtitles were likely to still have problems, but were at least closer to a modern translation, and we didn’t add additional errors through OCR.

With the 2020 Blu-ray subtitles, we are definitely more likely to start off with a good translation/few errors, but the OCR process could add a large number of new errors, perhaps making them unintelligible.

This is where someone like you could come in. 😉

If you can edit the existing Japanese subtitles to correct the problems you find, that would really help a lot. You can use the 2020 Blu-rays as a reference. To do this, you’d go into the current project files and look in the srt\original folder, and edit the files *-jpn-full.srt. You do not need to edit “titles” or “localized” SRT files – these are derived from the “full” files. You also do not need to edit files outside the “original” folder because these are derived from the originals.

But you may need to edit the text fragment files located in resources\fragments\txt, named *-jpn.txt. The formatting in these files is a little funny, so if you have questions, you can ask. These “fragments” are how we create subtitles for the mono mix and other special versions.

Once edited, send me the results, and I’ll include them in the next version. You can PM me with any questions.
