I would love love love a dvd of this, though DVD5 would be better as I can distribute it to anyone here from the UK who might need it.

And not only that but (shock horror) I prefer the film without the voice-over. I can't help it, I just hate it to be honest.

What's shocking about that? It's only a minority that like the voice-over and certainly not Ridley Scott nor Harrison Ford.

First person to send me a dual-layer DVD downconversion of the 15GB capture gets an @originaltrilogy.com e-mail address.

Send me a WMV-HD version and I'll throw in a cookie.

Word is that this HD version MAY be (and I really really stress MAY BE) nothing more then a UPSCALED version of the actual DVD, HDNET has upscaled a bunch of films for HD broadcast and as they do not have HD masters (at this time) they upscale & process the existing DVD's for HD broadcast - I may be wrong but I don't think that the B.R. is true HD based on the pictures posted it looks like an upcscaled film (the HD version looks a bit more washed out and the taillights and street signs have finer definition on the DVD capture)

I may be wrong but if this was a real HD version don't you think it would be all over the net (like digitalbits and that WB mastered the film in HD and don't you think that TNT (has the BR rights to broadcast), Showtime (I think they have the rights) and the other HD channels would be showing it now also? Again I may be wrong...

Shirley you can't mean the actual DVD? maybe the master the DVD was made from but the R2 and especially the R1 DVD look terrible compared to the HD converted down to DVD. Even then I have a hard time believing it was upscaled from the DVD, unless they re-did the DVD for SE release which hasn't been released and used that source.

You're wrong. This is a completely different master.

EDITED - man I sounded like an ass

Oh yeah, also just check out the horizontal scan lines in the "HD" pictures - DEAD give away that it's upscaled

The people at AVS forums disagree with you. There is also a 5.1 sound mix as well.

Comparing the low-res screen grabs upscaled to 1920x1080 in Photoshop to the screen grabs of the 6GB capture, the low-res screen grabs have tons of ringing and MPEG artifacts that are practically non-existent on the HD screen grabs, there's more fine detail in the HD versions, and the colors are richer and more vibrant in the HD versions. I'm also not seeing these scanlines you're talking about, unless you're referring to the lines around the woman on the electronic billboard, which are in the source material and just a special effect to simulate monitor scanlines.

I've seen what high-end scalers can do--I've owned several, including an HTPC that put all of the black box scalers to shame. None of them can perform the type of processing it would take to clean up those SD screen grabs and make them look like the HD versions. Faroudja used to be regarded as king of the hill, but they've been resting on their laurels and their scalers are usually regarded as overpriced and underfeatured compared to the competition these days. The Algolith Mosquito is the only processor on the market right now with really good MPEG noise reduction capabilities, but it's not a scaler. HTPCs can perform noise reduction and scaling, but again, they can't make those SD screen grabs look like the HD screen grabs.

And while the HD screen grabs do look a tad soft, we don't know when this master was created, who performed the telecine conversion, or the condition of the original film stock.

I'd say it's very unlikely the HD version is an upconversion unless it's an upconversion from an entirely different and newer SD master than the DVD--and studios don't do SD masters these days.

I managed to grab the 6gb, as well as the WMV hd version, which looks great on my laptop.
I was not able to grab the 15gb, but i made a decent dvd form the 6gb version, using easily
found software.

If i can get the 15gb version, i could churn out a decent dual layer version.

Why would someone do a 6GB version? A dual layer generally hold 8.5, why not max out the video quality on the space of the disc?

I too am eager to get a copy of this on Dual Layer. The retail version is a disaster.

They're referring to the 6gb HDTV .ts files not a DVD, the 6gb .ts version was 1280x1080 anamorphic (if HDTV can be anamorphic...) whereas the 15gb version is 1920x1080.

The 8.5gb dual layer is a misconception spread by marketing scum, they mean 8.5 billion bytes not 8.5 gigabytes, you only get 7.96gb on a dual layer recordable DVD.

So is anyone going to put together a proper dual-layer version? with the trailer from the Memphis Belle DVD? That would be SWEET
Author
Time
Yeah, I would vote for a dual-layer WMV-HD or XviD... although I can't play 1080p on my PC (the anamorphic 1280x1080 and standard 720p work though).

Nope. I'm talking about a dual layer version that i can play on my player. Down-rez it to DVD and do a dual-layer.

Everyone says they were doing it but no one responds. Should I just do it myself?

Which DVD? The Memphis Belle one has it but not sure if it's 16x9. The audio is REALLY low on it. That's all i remember.

the trailer can be found on R1 DVD of Altered States or Salem's Lot. Can't remember exactly but it is 16X9
