It's not the 5x capturing it's the edge directed 2x resizer that takes away a little of the sharpness which is why I added 2 sharpening filters into my conversion to compensate, I've stuck with the edge directed resizer because it also reduces some of the grain, the sharpness on Moth3r's version is an illusion helped by the haloing, if you were to take away the haloing the perceived sharpness would decrease.

Both the PAL & NTSC versions of my trilogy come from the same 'master' capture files so look virtually identical in terms of colour/detail etc., I didn't encode one format then convert to the other.

I also experimented with the edge directed resizer but it destroyed my starfield (bright stars remained but a lot of smaller ones got less bright). How is that in your transfer Citizen?

Thanks for the reply Citizen, I think that just about answered all my queries about the two sets!

I thought it was unlikely you'd have downconverted the NTSC from the anamorphic PAL - I give you far more credit than that

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the NTSC DL transfer after finally burning to DL media and watching on my CRT set. I have to say that this is, IMHO, the best transfer to date (and I have ALL of them). So, bravo to you, Citizen! Also, a big shout out to segaflip for getting it to us.

The only thing that I feel could be improved is from an authoring standpoint. The text buttons on the extras menu are partially outside of the title safe area (along with your avatar and text on the main menu). The text buttons on the right are cropped. I know, it's from the overscan. But this really should be considered in the creation phase of menus. It's just good authoring etiquette. I've had to redo menus of mine before due to making this same mistake. The menu will look great in Photoshop and then when I build the menu in DVD Studio Pro, the title safe overlay lets me know that it won't work . Obviously, on a computer or a projector this isn't an issue. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky enough to have a nice DLP projector (including me). I believe the majority of people watching this will be watching on old-fashioned TV's, although I could be wrong.

This is intended as constructive criticism and I hope this issue will be taken in to consideration for the creation of the menus for ESB and ROTJ Once again, GREAT JOB!!!

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

The logo/text on the main menu was sort of on purpose put there, close to the overscan border, the extras menu I got more concerned with placing the text on the picture than in the 'invisible' overscan border (bloody overscan, it probably ruins more films/tv than pan&scan - and people don't know!). The logo/text is in the exact same position on ESB/ROTJ menus and will stay there but the extras menus for those will be ok.

If you're viewing on an oldish non-widescreen CRT you probably won't benefit from the increased video bitrate of the dual layer version, plus the single layer version has no extras menu (there'll be a separate single layer disc with all the extras of the trilogy) In other words if you're going to the cost and trouble of burning a dual layer version you'd be nuts to watch it on an old 4:3 screen, from the start I'd intended my project to be at a high enough detail level so it can be shown on a really big screen without looking like VHS.

I can see all the menu options fine on my 28" widescreen Sony Trinitron, I got it 2nd hand and found the overscan to be too much so found the code for going into the service menu and adjusted the picture so the overscan is as small as possible without seeing the small black borders on broadcasted material.
(a tip for anyone going into a tv service menu, DON'T! took bloody weeks of tweaking it so the picture looked 'right', if you thought the trapeizoid etc. was difficult to adjust right on PC monitor you ain't seen nothing)

Great transfer and I love the Audio Easter egg..............

Assuming you have the same files for all 3 films, is there any possibility of you (or someone) uploading these somewhere as wav or mp3 files??

They could be handy for another project that has been discussed in the past.

russs15, yes I have all 3, the DVD versions are encoded at 224kbps because there's nothing worse than listening to low bitrate speech, I don't often download/listen to other ones because most of the time the people who encoded them are deaf idiots; "hey it's only speech so I can put it at 32kbps mono 22050hz, I doubt they'll notice it sounds like a herd of cats being dragged backwards through a ten foot deep hedge..."

I think we've taken another step towards maxing out the potential of LD transfer with this release. Kudos to you Citizen! This is definitely the best overall OT release to date. I think you and Moth3r are correct in that Moth3r's has a slight edge in detail, but in motion I think the difference is smaller than you might think. Add to that the superb 5.1 DD soundtrack and it didn't take long to piss off my neighbors this evening.

There is of course still a potential for improvement, possibly to be achieved by using an earlier laserdisc set - sans "dirt concealment" - with a high-end player. (I hope the X0 project team are taking note.)

We've been taking into consideration just about every LD release out there. There are definite advantages to the PAL transfers, but you'd be amazed at just how close the level of detail is on the X0.

That's great. I will need to brush up on my ripping audio from DVD skills once all 3 are available.

I can't wait to hear the other 2.

I would suggest getting a 1-month subscription to a premium news provider and to download them from alt.binaries.starwars. With costs in the range of USD 10-15 this should be relative affordable.

I also would like to see these on myspleen or another torrent site.

Yes please put this on Myspleen. I have tried the newsgroups and never have had any luck downloading from them. To much work and always get errors when trying to put together. Myspleen you just click couple times, download and burn. Simple as that. Yes it does take longer to download torrents, I can usually have one downloaded in about 12 to 24 hours on a cable modem.

Well this looks like a great set and does not look like it is going to be on MYSPLEEN so would anyone that has this set be willing to do a Pay-it-forward. If someone could get me a set I would dupe it and send out sets to others.

Anybody mind putting this on a.b.starwars?

edit: I'd prefer the PAL Single Layer DVDs

segaflip posted Citizen_EP4_PAL_SL on a.b.starwars one month ago (October 9-10).
Probably ought to wait until it expires from Giganews (50+ days retention) before I'd consider a repost ... OR
... I'll give you the copy I've got.

Citizen's NTSC DVD & XviD are wonderful and will remain in my collection, but the PAL with "chipmunks on helium" soundtrack
needs a new home.
Check your PM box, TrueDis.

[IIRC, Citizen tried using pitch-preserving software but was unhappy with the result.]

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Didn't realize that the sound was that bad on the PAL. I guess the NTSC is the way to go then ... is the NTSC DVD created from the NTSC LD or the PAL LD?

Can someone give me the svf file for Citizen's dual layer NTSC disc? I already burnt one coaster, and I'm afraid of wasting another one on something that might be a crappy file to begin with. Email it to brimley (at) gmail.com (at = @, no spaces)

Thanks!

Citizen, I finally got to spin the dual layer NTSC version tonight, and it's AWESOME! The 5x sampling paid off big time, and I appreciate your not using additional temporal filtering or anything else to artificially enhance the image -- to me that stuff sticks out like a sore thumb. Hopefully someday we can get the Japanese special collection discs into your hands.

Thanks again... like everyone else, I'm definitely looking forward to 5 and 6.

I just wanted to thank you, Citizen, for EP4.

I got the NTSC_SL version the day before it expired from my news server.

I'd kinda like to try out a DL version of something, and Citizen's releases seem like the place to start. Problem being, I don't have a DL burner, and I'm not sure my player plays DL. I'd rather not buy a DL burner if my player won't play DL, but I can't check if it plays DL without being able to burn DL. See the dilemma?

Anyone who might be willing to hook me up? Please e-mail me: karyudo@gmail.com

Or, if Citizen would just officially enter his DL version(s) in the fan edit contest, then, as a judge, I'd pretty much have to get them sent to me. Mwuhahaha...!
