I look forward to the 2008 presidential election. I'll be a year over the age to vote, and can vote for Hillary Clintom.

I'm sure most liberals find THAT choice lacking. Most sane ones, anyway.

What's this election for?

There are various local elections going on right now...for Mayor, and that type of thing. Are there any congressional seats up for grabs right now? Not sure...

Shouldn't be any congressional seats up until even-numbered years. Maybe if someone died or resigned. Mostly Mayors/city councilpeople, and State propositions.

Hmm, so all that sort of stuff is done at the same time in each city/town? Interesting.

War does not make one great.

Not necessarily. The town I live in is an odd-ball town. We hold our elections in May of even-numbered years, along with a few others in our state.

And you think Condoleeza "Bush kiss-ass" Rice would do any better? Clinton may not be the best candidate in the U.S., but you must take the lesser of the two evils!

I've heard people suggesting she won't even get the nomination. She's said things that were all over the political spectrum to appease whoever she happens to be talking to. The people on the far-left won't vote for hear because of the centrist things she's said, and the centrists won't vote for her because of far-left things.
With this information society, she cannot depend on lack of news to protect one side from the other.

Excuse me, but did I say ANYTHING about Rice? For one, I don't really expect her to get the nomination, but even if she does, that doesnt' mean I will vote for her. I just said that HILARY was a bad choice, nothing else.

Honestly, I think whoever runs for president in 2008 should have absolutely no affiliations with either the Bush or Clinton administrations, but that's just me.

Edited to add: Also, Adam, we're derailing this thread. If you want to argue presidents, go to the Politics thread. This is about 2005 elections, not 2008.

My district's congressman was appointed head of the SEC, and his seat was up for grabs. But not for today's election.

Today was just for a few ballot measures that Ahnuld was pushing.

Cool. No elections up here... yet. There's a rumour of a Christmas election in an attempt to topple the ruling Liberals.

Side note: every time I hear or see Condoleeza Rice's name, I can't help but think of Steve Earle's song, "Hey Condie Condie". If you've heard the song, you'll know what I mean.

AWK, I had no idea you took such an interest in Canadian politics. Personally, I don't think a Christmas election (or January election, whcich would mean campaigning over Christmas) would work in anyone's favour. I think the Conservatives want to campaign through Christmas about as much as we want them to be campaigning through Christmas. So help me, God, if Jim Pankiw comes to my door campaigning Christmas morn, I will shoot him. I am not a violent man, but I will shoot him.

At the same time, is there really a good time to call an election in Canada? It would be easier if we had regularly scheduled elections like the Americans do; that way, a ruling party could not call an election whenever the members felt like it, and people would be forewarned and adjust their schedules accordingly.

Not specifically Canadian politics, but politics in general.

If you knew a thing about Canada, you'd know that there is too much liberal bull crap there already. They *need* to move back towards the centre, not just "I think they should.." They NEED it.
