I’m a prequel hater, but even I am excited about some small updates (cut sc81 and Adywan’s)
Yes, I was thinking either what you suggested or everything being remade (different cast, new audio, etc). I think I would prefer to see what you had in mind. Hopefully one day there will be a second special edition as well as a theatrical edition, with no changes.
As a “Prequel Kid” who grew up with them (and I literally never watched Star Wars anymore before my son grew an interest) I would love to watch a Remake of the OT some time. But it will guranteed never happen - at least not without the blessing of George Lucas himself. What a way to piss on his work (although, they kinda already did with the Sequels).
Nevertheless, If i can make A New Hope feel like a modernized adventure for all viewers and lovers of the Prequel and OT trilogies, it will certainly fulfill me when I binge Prequels and OT chronologically.
Also, can we all just admire ArtIsDead (fanedit.org) for making this beautiful cover art for my edit:

That is a very nice poster 😃 Good to know you’d enjoy both a remake and a remaster of the OT - if they were done well, of course.
I found a good concept video showing the destruction of Alderaan in a more detailed way. I know that you don’t plan to reuse Rogue One footage, but that shot showing a landscape of Alderaan and the one showing Bail in the moment of the explosion are good ones from the games. You plan to make something like that in your edit?

This is pretty interesting concept. Though, some of the shots were of low quality. But for the most part it works.
I have Topaz if anyone needs me to try and upscale
Interesting video. I actually did some alterations to the Alderaan scene already. I can show you guys when i get back home tomorrow morning. 😃

I wasn’t going to release this before done since it’s rough, but since we came onto the topic and I promised to show it, well - there you go. Here it is. Definitely not finished and there are a bunch of mixes between self-made visual changes and existing footage + placement holders (the laser hitting the planet etc) but it shows you what I’m going for. Color grading is far from done as well + the planet destruction view from inside the Death Star is ugly.
The laser hitting the planet is a placeholder, as I just added some Alderaan buildings to Rogue One Scarif footage for concept.
None of this might end up in the final edit, so we’ll see.

I really liked what I saw. The new shots seemed original, and not a compilation of pre-existing footage. I just missed a real explosion at the end, and in my opinion Vader’s new shot doesn’t look like it came from A New Hope. Looking forward to the finished scene!
That WIP looks pretty great! Really interested seeing how it’d look in a more complete state. The only thing really missing (minus the obvious cleanup some shots need) would probably be the planet, y’know, actually exploding. Honestly probably the best modernized Alderaan explosion I’ve seen. The scoring is also phenomenal, and intercutting Ben’s reaction with a more slow, built up explosion is a really interesting approach.
I’m digging your project so far, I can give you my exploding Alderaan scene, it’s essentially the SE version but without the stupid rings around it.
That was frickin’ wicked, I loved it!

The new pacing is just awesome. It gives way more weight to the tragic moment, and characters’ reactions are longer.

@Anjohan why not wait and base your project on the hd version of adywan’s revisited version of a new hope when it comes out?
Shouldn’t be too much of a hustle to replace some video files with whatever upgraded version Adywan releases, but I don’t really think it will be necessary. Adywan’s ANH is “Prequel-supported” and have many great additions to the score and new scenes (that will not be in ANH Revisited HD), so this upscaled version combined with 4k regrade I think will do the trick.
Yeah but upscaling hd to 4k would look better than doing it with sd right or am I wrong?
Any thoughts on making the old lightsabers kind of like the knew ones? Adding a bit more light to their surrounding areas?
I found two videos that could help to enhance the opening:

I posted the second one because I think the Tantive IV explosion still looks dated, even in the remake of the scene in the first clip. So, if you can produce some explosion in the ship in some excerpt of the 2nd clip’s footage, from the 25sec-32sec, maybe you can archieve a more modern sequence.
So, how is this edit going? I’m really excited for it, specially after seeing the Alderaan explosion. It looks awesome.

WOW! Glad to see this revived as well! This was an edit I was really looking forward to!
This is great news that this project is revived along with your reinvigorated passion for Star Wars. In light of this edit meant to be as a prequel bridge, will there be any changes in that regard?
I have some suggestions that may or may not assist.
Some minor ideas:
Other ideas:
Vader:
To boost Vader’s character in the movie, I liked an idea G&Gfan will be incorporating into his own edit. He plans to remove any suggestion of Vader’s inferiority to Tarkin. I believe the first moment is when Tarkin orders Vader to stop the force choke. The next instance would be Leia’s insult when she says Tarkin is holding Vader’s leash.
The editor G&GFan plans to add a new scene with Vader and Sidious discussing the death of Kenobi, but as of now I do not know how that looks like or if it really fits into the movie.
One way or another, I appreciate the hard work you and other editors put into this. Great work is being done here.
Remove the word “ancient” in the line to Vader about him practicing an “ancient” religion.
The Jedi and Sith are unquestionably ancient religions though.
Haven’t give much thought to what to cut out yet. Focus is mainly on modernization of vfx and color grading atm.
