I’ll have to do a test of the first scene and post it here, using… megaupload? to have comments and suggestions 😃

This is absolutely fantastic! I love these shows and would be willing to help in any way needed. Just let me know. Good work so far!

Personally I’d go with an UAR version, getting more image top and bottom and colors from the TV, while retaining higher resolution from BD; and if you can ehnance the lower quality source with noise reduction, grain, AI upscaling etc. and also pre-colormatching, result may be rewarding IMHO!

The only problem is that you need to use Avisynth, the process could be tedious as sometimes you have to manually correct the image matching or choose different settings for different reels/scenes/shots, and may take long time converting it depending on the hardware.

Quick example (no DNR, grain, AI upscaling etc.):

Hello, I stumbled upon Your post while looking for a high quality copy of Anne of Green Gables. I am willing to help out with your project but I think we have an even greater issue at hand. I recently bought the blu-ray with all 4 films on it, paid good money for that and was very disappointed with the quality. The image is very “processed” looks like it was artificially sharpened and the grain was removed but the detail was lost also you can clearly see some cheap compression artifacts in some scenes which make me very sad since I really love this movie and believe it should receive a proper release. I have written to Sullivan in hope to find out if there is another copy of the movie out there one can buy, since the SADPANDA 1080p version looks to my eyes better than their version and is the best one I could find on the internet, but You can download only the 2 part of the first movie, since the first gets stuck at 83.1%.

Anyway how is Your project going so far?

Here is a quick attempt to match the two shots from your first post

I stalled a while ago because of a problem with a very sunny sunshine hitting the school’s front wall at some time during a scene, the school suddently become entirely white and it’s very distracting. I’ve done about 60 minutes so far, would you be interested in seeing the result and let me know what you think?

Yes I would definitely be interested in seeing the results.

I’m very interested in this project too. I tried my own basic upscale using the DVDs and Topaz but am always interested in seeing the wonders that more detailed people are able to produce.

ok let me render the 1 hour “test” that I’ve done and share it for you to download.

Okay let’s do this.

I will work on one scene at a time. I will share 3 versions of each scenes, and if you like my project, you can help me tune up my restoration (I am using Davinci Resolve - I am not a pro, but I start to understand the most important buttons!).

I own the original DVD, which has very nice colors. The bluray looks horrible, it’s very dark and I am afraid there is no way to recover some of the darks but maybe Davinci can do miracles 😃

Scene 1 : Anne walks and read poetry in the wood (opening credit).

My Davinci touch-ups : https://mega.nz/file/Mb0kHTIZ#e187UXbeqU_vsBQp_6L6pNcemyD-4rG37OiZktV-OsQ (27 Meg)

NOTE : In DaVinci, for this scene, I added an adjustment Clip and…
Node #01 : I adjusted the overall Gamma (0.05), Gain (0.07), Offset (31.35)
Node #02 : I isolated the skin color and adjusted the Temp (320).
Node #03 : I isolated the greens and adjusted the temp (-290.0).

Not bad for a start?
Any help would be appreciated!

I’m in full support of this project moving forward. Just got the Blu-ray’s and I they are even worse than I thought they would be. Love what I see you doing to match the original color. I know it’s probably not possible but is there anyway to address the damage that has been done by the heavy and poor use of DNR?

Just a quick question. Does anyone else have a bluray copy that has completely different font at the beginning of the film? Mine also looks markedly worse that the Blu-ray example you posted for reference in comparison to your color correction and the dvd version. I bought these directly from the Sullivan shop. There must have been an earlier Blu-ray version? And if so, can you tell me what your cover looks like? This set was extremely expensive and as it turns out… they don’t do returns. I wish I had known!

Gotcha. The version I got was part of a complete 4 film package (just bought to get the sequel “Anne of Avonlea). To anyone looking to get the Blu-ray to rip… Definitely recommend steering clear of that whole package and just getting the single bluray.

Should I continue with scene 2 using the same kind of changes?
