I think that's about the only way this scene makes sense now. To take it one step further ... when the Emperor says "Search your feelings, Lord Vader, and you will know it to be true," maybe he's actually mocking Vader's attempt to hide the truth from him ... so he throws Vader's own words from the future at him, to show that he has already foreseen the whole Luke-Vader encounter.
OK, I know that's a fairly ridiculous stretch, but I thought it was fun to think about!
