Chamber of Secrets Revisited V2/V3

in 16:9 and with mentioned changes (previous page) is now releasing within a few hours.

Major changes are:

  • 16:9 / IMAX Format

  • Film color graded to look like a mix of PoA and CoS original grade, as to have the grading evolve through the films; SS -> CoS -> PoA (colorful but darker - CoS, more thematically greener and darker to suit the Snake theme - PoA, a little bit more colorful but contains its original grade).

  • Hogwarts Castle carefully crafted to be more gray rather than orange or brown, as to fit with the castle in PoA and onwards.

  • Skies are now blue rather than purple (most movies shot on film before '02/03 have this issue where blue skies turn into purple due to no digital color grading as is the common practice now).

  • Keep the narrative focused on Harry and his story, rather than the occurence of two side-plots (Colin and Ron’s letter).

  • Prolonged reacion shots or close-ups (as are very frequent in Columbus’s slower children movies) are now shortened and/or sometimes removed as to keep the film(s) flowing at an improved pace. Helps the films feel more attuned to an also more grown-up audience.

  • The Whomping Willow sequence completely changed visually, to match with its location in PoA. The sequence is also re-arranged and even expanded on, + continuity errors are fixed (like flipped shots or broken continuity).

  • New Establishing Shots of Hogwarts, to set the mood and make the viewers invest more in the tone of the film as well as get a feel of the Castle and its size.

  • A lot of new sound mixing, to set a new and darker tone to the film.

  • Quidditch re-arranged, missing sound SFXs added (the bludger has two missing SFXs in the movie that always bothered me) and more.

  • The Riddle Flashback / Diary Memory majorly altered with visual trickery, a new and scary soundmix and better pace.

  • The exterior at night Hogwarts windows are now blue/green and dark as in PoA, OotP and HBP, rather than purple and bright.

  • The Harry and Draco duel paced and altered. Prolonged Duel soundmix. It imo feels more impactful and that more is at stake.

  • Harry talking to the snake has a new soundmix and improved pacing. I want it to feel impactful and scary.

  • Harry in the Library Study Group has a new and scarier soundmix, as well as trickery to the visual astetic as the original scenery feels dull and empty imo.

  • The “Hagrid with the trio in his hut at Night” sequence is majorly altered, with new establishing shots (to match with the Hut’s location in the following films) as well as to craft a more atmospheric tone. New soundmix and an improved pace.

  • The Forbidden Forest sequence altered. Some music removed as to allow the audience to feel as if they are in the forest with Harry and Ron.

  • Many instances of a dumbded-down Ron are removed. This also includes all but one instance of Harry yelling at Ron in this film. There are a total of FOUR outbursts from Harry to Ron in CoS. Now there are only one, and more fitting imo.

  • Third Act of the film majorly altered. Removed too much of the re-used Philosopher’s Stone OST and introduced a new and fitting soundtrack instead. Voldemort and CoS’s themes are kept intact. New soundmixes, alterations to pace and more as well.

  • Tom Riddle / voldemort deepfake morph (made by me) as the Diary is being ruined by Harry. I want Voldemort’s (SPOILER!) hidden piece of soul to emerge for continuity and foreshadowing reasons.

  • Ending is paced better, with a quicker emergence of the final scene with Hagrid in the Great Hall (which is also paced better, removing overly long shots and even some re-usage of same shots) as well as redundant reaction shots.

  • and then about a 100 or more changes I’m not going to mention here.

Apart from very few changes to the scoring of CoS - as I want CoS to keep its musical identity as all HP films have one, pace and cuts from the original CoS Revisited are mostly present.

Great, great update!

I could’t imagine the Revisited versions to become better, but you have outdone yourself and amazed me with the Ultimate edit! I really enjoyed the first movie so far! The color grading is nicely balanced with all the excess “shining” smoothed. The story is advancing in a good pace also. Bravo!

Already scheduling the second movie for a watch!

Keep it up, Andreas! ❤️

So, as for Prisoner of Azkaban - The Ultimate Edition, it is getting very close and it’s time to give out an update.

Prisoner of Azkaban has no narrative changes or lots of fancy new establishing shots or VFX, but what it does have is a sole focus on keeping some of John William’s Original Score for the first two entires alive in PoA. This is to keep a strong continuity with the previous two films and to carry over the emotion of previous events. I also want to keep Prisoner of Azkaban feeling less like a “one-off” movie with a soul more seperate to the other entries in the series.

The Major Focus on Prisoner of Azkaban is to remove some of it’s more individualistic traits (like constant fade-ins and outs) as well as a soundtrack that’s seperate from the rest of the series (which is true for the films here-on and out, but not for this fan edit series). But I also have to keep the film’s Original Score in place and keep it profound to the film, as it is a part of its identity.

Another important focal point is that PoA use music more subtly as well as more sparingly, and let scenes breath with dialogue and ambience rather than out-blown soundtracks. And this I really like. Therefore I can’t just simply copy&paste soundtrack into the scenes. They have to be edited, slowed down, pitched down to resemble a darker tone and have the right beats to them. So what I’ve been doing (besides SFX work) for the last weeks (before i went abroad) is to literally create my own narrative of Williams music for some of the scenes, putting together hours of content to befit the scenes they’re in as well as the tone. Only at the rarest of occations would a short musical montage straightly pasted into the scene actually work and only for what would be a second or two of a beat.

Video Examples will follow down below.

Major Changes:

  • Prisoner of Azkaban’s Original Score is kept intact (beautiful and alive as it is), but the William’s OST from the two previous entries also gets a place in the story to keep with the continuity of the previous entries and to keep building on the emotional weight of moments of prior.

  • Color Grade slightly more colorful and vibrant, to accompany the continuity with the two previous entries. However, as the story gets darker (mainly the end of Act II) the color grade reverts back to it’s original grading (with less color and vibrancy).

  • Tremendous amount of SFX work, with new ambience and foley for key scenes - many of which are exampled below.

  • Fade Ins and Outs (including those that make it clear that we end/begin Act I, Act II and Act III of the film) are all but removed because this is the only film to do so. In keeping with continuity, these have to go to make PoA feel less like a “different” entry of the saga. The only ones kept are the opening one and the Dementor one.

  • New Establishing Shots for what feel like “missing footage” to work with. Here I mostly reference the opening, in which Aunt Petunia says “Harry, Harry… open the door” over the span of 8 seconds to a black screen. Now, we instead have two freshly-made Exterior Shots of Private Drive whilst it’s raining to accompany the dialogue.

  • Removed some shots of bad acting, such as Harry’s first look at Hermione whilst crying about the reveal of Sirius.

  • Paced the Final Act better, as the time travel plotline loses momentum on repeat viewings (for me). The Third Act is kind of where I “lose interest”.

  • … and more, but mostly nitpicks here and there.

About time! I reckon you’ll get all eight films done by the end of the year or into the next! 😀

Is there something wrong with the audio in the PoV preview clips, though? 🤨

Haha, for my own sanity I hope not! xD But it’s me, so maybe they will be.

And kind of. The files were rendered in 5.1 and streamable has made a really low-audio stereo file out of it. So turn your volume high!

A rushed product is forever bad, as they say, so by all means, take your sweet time. 😌

I would like to ask if you’ve thought about using John Williams’ expanded scores from La-La Land Records, but I doubt you can even afford them. 😝

Update - Goblet of Fire Ultimate Edition IMAX

So, Chloe of Fanedit.org has shared some very good ideas and suggestions, and those in this list are what remain of them that I am implementing for Goblet of Fire - Ultimate Edition.

I am also mentioning new major updates and changes for the opening 15 minutes in a new list below that.

Her Synopsis:

Every time I watch The Goblet of Fire, I have to admit that I feel disappointed. It lacks the mystery and suspense that should be at the heart of the story. As a result, for many people it turned out to be the weakest film in the entire Harry Potter series. Despite high expectations, the film fell short and left audiences feeling underwhelmed. As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I tried to come up with a list of suggestions to make it the thrilling and suspenseful mystery it was meant to be. With your amazing editing skills, I think the audience will be kept guessing until the very end, never quite sure who is pulling the strings.

Cut completely the dream sequence from the beginning, including the one after the Yule Ball (both will be used later). This way we don’t know what Harry dreamt about, and it leaves the audience with questions. The aim is to keep Voldemort’s plan from being revealed for now, and to keep the audience from seeing Crouch Jr. This means we don’t know who the person walking through the rubble at the championship is, and keeps the air of mystery.

Changes Being Implemented:

  • Cut the shot of Cedric, his father and Mr. Weasley descending from the sky after using the Portkey.

  • Cut the shot of the students cheering at the landing of the Beauxbatons carriage that almost swept Hagrid away. That’s something students who like Hagrid would never do.

  • Cut the scene of the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students entering the Great Hall. Their entrance/performance never made much sense to me, and the blurry staff thing is ridiculous. We don’t need to see Fleur before she is chosen by the Goblet of Fire. It’s more realistic to have the Goblet choose her as a random student.

(THIS SCENE IS NOT CUT, but HEAVILY altered).

  • Cut the scene of Karkarov secretly entering the Great Hall entirely. This red herring scene leads nowhere. Also, the film tries too hard to make him a suspect. Karkarov looks suspicious enough with his grimaces alone.

  • Cut all scenes and shots in which Moody’s eye is watching Harry, including scenes in which he is watching him from a distance (these shots will be used later). This will remove all suspicion from Moody and the audience will never think there is anything suspicious about him.

  • Change the sound of Moody’s eye. It sounds too electric/mechanical, and electricity isn’t supposed to work at Hogwarts (at least in the books).

  • Cut the shot of Hermione saying “Your wand, Harry” during the First Task. This makes Harry look more competent, and he wouldn’t be able to hear her anyway.

  • Cut the shot of Madame Maxime touching Hagrid’s beard. It’s not funny and it’s disgusting.

  • Cut out all the scenes in which Fleur swims through the seaweed and put them together and insert them before the scene in which Harry swims into the seaweed. It is more suspenseful and exciting in this linear order.

  • Cut Moody out of the scene where Crouch Sr. talks to Harry after the second task. The idea is to make the audience think that Crouch Sr. is behind everything, which works perfectly with the scene where Sirius speculates that either Crouch Sr. or Karkarov is responsible for Harry’s name being in the Goblet. This would require some heavy editing and appropriate music choices to make it work. Also, the scene in Dumbledore’s office follows immediately after this one, so it would appear that Harry is about to tell Dumbledore that he thinks Crouch Sr. is the villain.

  • Insert the scene in which Harry finds the body of Crouch Sr. just before the start of the Third Task. This makes it clear to the audience that Crouch Sr. is innocent, and as it is just before the Task, there is no time to wonder who the villain might be. Also, suspicion falls on Karkarov again, as in the previous scene Harry intercepts him and Snape discussing the Dark Mark, and two scenes before the audience learns that Karkarov has been judged by Crouch Sr. (Basically, the order of the scenes is Lake Talk Harry w/Crouch Sr. -> Dumbledore’s Office and Trial -> Snape’s Storage -> Crouch Sr.'s Dead Body -> The Third Task).

  • When Harry finds out that Snape was a Death Eater, make sure we see Harry’s shocked face at that exact moment, and use something like the sound of drums or some appropriate music. This revelation should be crucial, especially given the HBP, but it’s just mentioned here as if it were nothing.

  • Crosscut the scene where Harry and Dumbledore are talking about the trial and Harry reveals that he’s been dreaming about Crouch Jr. with Harry’s dream (mostly interior shots) from the beginning. This is where the audience finds out what Harry has been dreaming about and who the man from the championship is. At this point, things start to fall into place, but it is still unclear how Crouch Jr. fits into the plot.

  • In Harry’s dream, mute the phrase “gather our old comrades…”; this will make the Death Eaters more independent, as in the books, and is consistent with seeing Voldemort in the graveyard for the first time in 13 years. Crouch Jr. also hated the Death Eaters, otherwise he would never have turned Draco, his ‘friend’s’ son, into a ferret

  • Add an establishing shot after the Snape’s Storage scene, so that it does not feel like the Second and Third Tasks are only a week apart.

  • Shorten or cut the shot of Moody coming out of the maze and Bewitching Krum (to be used later).

  • When Harry talks about being in the graveyard before, cut to some outside shots of his dream from the beginning.

  • Make Voldemort’s eyes red, as in the books, and/or change his voice to make him sound and look even more terrifying. This would make Harry’s PTSD in the OotP more justifiable. Also, in the later films, Voldemort does not seem as scary as he should. (I understand that this is very challenging, and if it couldn’t be done, that’s fine).

  • Voldemort calls Harry’s mother a “filthy muggle mother” in the graveyard. But she’s not a Muggle. This is a mistake in the film. He should have said ‘Mudblood’ or ‘Muggleborn’ (I don’t know if it can be fixed), (Maybe muting the word ‘Muggle’ would do the trick).

  • Voldemort tortures Harry with the Crucio Curse in the graveyard. He then lifts the curse by saying Crucio a second time. This makes no sense. Magic doesn’t work that way in the films or the books. I suggest muting the second Crucio.

  • Intercut shots of Moody stalking Harry throughout the film (including his eye zooming) in the final reveal of who’s really pulling the strings. Also use a shot of Nevil reading the book and the shot (previously cut) of Moody bewitching Krum as he comes out of the maze.

  • In the scene where Dumbledore says “Your arm, Harry”, mute Harry’s crying. It looks like Dumbledore is hurting Harry, and he would never do that.

  • Cut the shot of Dumbledore talking about burning the curtains in his fourth year. It’s out of character (at least for his film version) and doesn’t fit the scene at all.

  • Cut Ron’s farewell to Fleur and Hermione’s to Krum. The end of the film is too long as it is, and Krum says he will write to Hermione, which he never does. It also works better when there isn’t much of a gap between the previous scene, in which Dumbledore tells Harry “You’re not alone”, and the departure, in which the students stand together and say goodbye.

  • Make all the dream sequences black and white (just an idea, not sure it would work well).

(NOT Black&White, but more horrific).

  • A few additional tweaks, such as the use of colour grading to make the film more aesthetically pleasing and to maintain the overall gradual darkening of the series, sound mixing to create a more immersive experience for the audience, making them feel like they are truly part of the wizarding world, SFX and VFX here and there, and careful pacing cuts to ensure that the film moves at a steady pace and that the viewing experience is engaging throughout.

OTHER UPDATES AND IMPLEMENTED CCHANGES:

  • The film opens with new, custom establishing shots of The Burrows (The Weasley’s Home) that set the mood and give time to breath before the introduction of Harry and his friends. Harry is introduced wakening up from a nightmare, but we don’t know what it was about.

  • Removed a lot of GoF musical scores, replaced SFX and ambience with custom-made, and let the film have a darker, more silent tone in the dark opening minutes. Added Whimsical and Wonderous John Williams when fitting.

  • The film has insane pace in the opening 15 minutes, and I’ve done a lot of work to create new establishing shots and new close-ups to give the film’s opening time to breathe.

  • The film has a new Going-To-Hogwarts-By-Train Sequence.

  • The Great Hall has a completely new structure, with no Filch gimmick and a completely different look and feel. It’s hard to explain, so I’ll release some snippets soon.

… and more.
