I don't understand this a.b.starwars business.

A newsgroup is a discussion group on Usenet that is for talking about a specific topic e.g. alt.binaries.starwars would likely have discussions and files to do with star wars - alt.binaries.ilovemonkeys would have discussions and files for people who have a penchant for monkeys etc.

Newgroups can store files, messages, pictures etc. but you need a newsreader program to be able to connect to the newsgroup, browse/read what is there and download or post files or messages.

The big deal about newsgroups is that unlike a torrent or "Direct Connect" hub etc. you are not dependant on the speed of the 'uploader'. Once a file is on the newsgroup, you can typically download it at the full speed of your particular internet connection.

So if you are on a 1.5mb/512k ADSL connection for instance, you would get around 150KB per second when downloading from newsgroups. (Whereas you might only get 2K per second from a torrent if the uploader has a slow or busy connection.)

Some ISPs support newsgroups, so if you have a good ISP, you can just download a simple download oriented newsreader (like Grabit for the PC or Unison for the Mac), subscribe to alt.binaries.starwars, tell it to grab all the headers (This can take a while the first time - some newsgroups have over 4 million headers/files) and then choose the files to download.

If your ISP is not so good, then a lot of the files may display as incomplete, or not show up at all - in that case you need a 'newsgroup provider' and pay a monthly fee to get access to newsgroups. Companies like giganews provide this type of service, have extremely fast servers, and keep the files for over a month and the files are nearly always 100% complete, so they are well worth it unless your ISP is spectacular.
The provider will give you an account with a username and password, and you put that into your newsreader software and off you go.

Almost anything imaginable is out there on Newsgroups, from music, old TV shows, esoteric films, abandonware, special interest stuff - it is like a whole other internet of treasures waiting to be accessed at full speed.

Once you newsgroup, you can never go back....

Who is your internet provider?? In the UK, ntl and Virgin have free access but I am unsure of other providers.

All the information you need is linked to here.

To get started, I suggest using Forte Agent 2 and either your ISP or a premium service. (I use Astraweb's 65Gb for $25 as a premium backup to my ntl service)

I hope this helps.......

Is there any way someone could get me copies of the Dual Layer versions of ADigitalMan Episode 4, 5 and 6? If so I can Pay-it-forward on about 3 sets so we can get these out. I know they are going up on usernet but alot people dont have or can use usernet. Please someone help us out. PM me if possible. Thanks.

Big ups to ADM for the great work!

I've found some audio issues in the DL version of ANH (dl'ed from a.b.starwars). There are at least 2 instances where there is a bassy "thump" that should not be there (haven't watched the entire movie yet, just some scenes). These occur approx. at:

0:58:57 (right after Alderaan gets f'ed in the a)
1:02:57 (right after the Falcon hits hyperdrive)

The following audio tracks are affected:

ADM's 2005 Custom Mix (5.1 Track 1)
2004 Surround Mix (5.1 Track 3)

I checked the other audio tracks, as well as the original 2004 DVD and Darth Editous' Ep4 edit...all of these play fine w/o the "thumps" (so I don't think it's my sound system).

Any previous record of these and/or are they fixable?

It's in the LFE I'm sure. I had the problem on my own system in those two spots due to accidentally repeating the LFE track. I thought I'd fixed it. *sigh* See if lowering your subwoofer volume does the trick. I'll be curious.

Unfortunately, our levels are HAA & THX set, so lowering the sub/LFE level isn't a viable fix.

It is a shame, because I love this edit and wanted it to be the "definitive" version (especially the Han shooting Greedo scene...truer to the OT than the Darth Editous version).

If ever you come up with a fix or if you have some references (guide, software, etc) for DIY, that would indeed kick some ass. Thanks!

Will do. Can you verify one more thing for me ... what is the "date" on the credits menu? I just want to be sure that the earler version (that I thought I subsequently fixed) wasn't released.

Quick questions for ADigitalMan (or anyone else who knows). What releases have Dual-Layer versions? Are the DL versions actually using different compression from the source files?

Edit: Never mind! I should have read all the way through the first page. I feel like a newbie of the intarnets.

Hmmm.... just watched the SL disc of ANH and I didn't have the alternate set of subtitles for the Jabba scene. I'm not that concerned about it really, but I'm curious about what was in the dialogue there, even if I dont' re-insert it.

Using the subtitles button on the DVD player in the living room (my roommate's older Sony), it came up that there were two subtitle tracks, and I could toggle through them via the remote as the scene played, but only the regular dialogue appeared for the first track and there was nothing in the second track. Confused the hell out of me, as I've never had problems with his DVD player before -- we use it all the time when we watch movies together. Once I got an email about this problem, I put it into the DVD player in my room (a newer Sony) to check it out again and it was fine. Quite odd, to be sure. So I checked it again in his and once again, I saw nothing. Not a thing in the alternate sub track. Definitely some weirdness going on there, but it appears to be limited to his player.

Sorry for the false alarm. I guess I should have checked into it further before saying anything. Still, color me as one very confused Demon Hunter today.

Don't know if I like the balcony scene being removed, but overall, it sounds great.
