Hello Prequel Fans. Wouldn’t it be cool if Disney released a Special Edition of the Prequel Trilogy in which they re-rendered the cgi characters to be higher resolution and fit in better with live action people. Thoughts.

Yes, I wish they would improve the CGI. 100%
Unfortunately they are contractually not allowed to touch George’s films.

Disney could order it, and release it, but it would be Lucasfilm doing the work on it.
If they did a Special Edition for the Prequels I’d hope they do more than fix some of the dated and poor quality CGI.
Unfortunately they are contractually not allowed to touch George’s films.
I see this claim quite a lot on reddit and YouTube video comment sections too, but never with a source for it, or any relevant quotes on it from the high ups at Lucasfilm on the subject. Hate to be “that guy”, but do you have a source for that?
The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

First, they wouldn’ve have done it by now. Pre-TLJ, Lucasfilm’s agenda under Disney was to appeal to the fandom that believes Lucas fucked up Star Wars. No Prequel content, TFA being OT fan-service palooza, cancelling The Clone Wars in favor of Rebels, the hyper focus on the OT era in comics and novels, etc. Even now in the age of Prequel apologetics, they still reference the OOT (the OG Krait Dragon call being used in The Mandalorian Season 2).
I highly doubt that with JJ Abrams and Jon Favreau clearly favoring the original versions, they wouldn’t have released them by now if there wasn’t something stopping them.
Second, we know JJ Abrams asked and was told it wasn’t possible.

I want the theatrical versions. Yes even for the prequels. Always had a soft spot for episode 1, no not the awful derided parts. The enjoyable ones.

First of all, I refuse to believe they wouldn’t have done it by now if they could. Especially since, until after TLJ, Lucasfilm’s agenda under Disney was to appease the people who thought Lucas fucked up Star Wars with the special editions and the Prequels. No Prequel content, TFA being an OT fan-service palooza, cancelling The Clone Wars and replacing it with Rebels, the huge focus on the era between ANH and ESB in comic runs and novels, etc. Even now in the age of Prequel apologetics, they still do things to reference the original versions of the films (the original Krait Dragon call being used in The Mandalorian Season 2).
I highly doubt that with JJ Abrams, Jon Favreu and Dave Filoni clearly favoring the original versions, they would’ve released them by now if there wasn’t something from stopping them.

So that’s a ‘no’ on the source for your claim that:
Unfortunately they are contractually not allowed to touch George’s films.
I mean, your belief is cool and all. Some of it may be likely. But it is still just your belief.
The search for an actual source continues!

Yeah, it would be good to have all the theatrical releases available, the versions we saw on the big screen.

I feel like JJ saying he was told it wasn’t possible is kinda a slam dunk. Combined with Kennedy saying she hasn’t touched those and that, “Those will always be his”.

Never say never, but I don’t think it’s likely. Even if the OOT got released, it’d be DNR’d to hell and back (not to mention poor audio) with automated cleanup errors and revisionist color grading. I’d rather stick with something fanmade.
Even if there isn’t a literal signed contract, Disney seems to have an understanding with George about not tweaking his movies, and they seem intent on honoring that.

Kennedy’s reply of “Oh! I haven’t touched those. (laughs) You kidding? Those will always remain his.” was to a question about the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy. Not the Prequels. I thought it was just worth mentioning that.
Like most on here I don’t think we’ll ever see a Special Edition of the Prequels, probably out of some reverence to George more than something contractual, but I would certainly like to see a PT:SE.
Thinking more about this, fuck it. The many awesome Fan Edits of the Prequels probably do a better job than an official PT:SE release would.

You’re probably right on that. And something for everyone’s tastes and preferences too.

It seems that way, which is unfortunate. Even if it were green-lit, would have the bottle or vision to even take on such a task?
The Prequels could really do with a Special Edition release, they have not aged well at all for me. And aspects of the story, pacing, CGI and direction could all benefit from an edit, as some of the editors on here and other similar websites have shown.
