Update on Eyes Wide Shut 35mm Print-

The Film has been scanned and is being sent to me and an early collaborator soon. Unfortunately, the scan turned out to be 1.85:1, not 1.33:1. Although, I looked at a preview of the scan and the colors, grain and all look truly beautiful. This project was a bit more expensive than I expected, though.

The total costs of obtaining the reels, scanning, shipping, drives etc. was around $962.

Where is your physical print at the moment? Could you send me a private message please, if you can let me know how/where it was scanned (in private) and if we can see a preview of the scan it’d be possible to decide if it’s worth doing a re-scan.

@gweedo16 as one of the original donors, definitely think a preview of the original scan should be released to donors (as is customary), even as-is.

Understand it was completed, no worries if it’s grindhouse-y. As said, I’m happy to help you with managing the raw files if you need support.

And if something went wrong with the original scan, then definitely think considering a rescan as offered above makes sense

Do the other doners have contact with the gweedo16 ? I sent him two meassages the last two months and no answer …

@Garidaki I’m a fellow donor as well. I’ve had confirmation that the print was scanned by the team in Europe, but gweedo16 still needs to pass along files to donors.

As mentioned, I can help with the DNGs (raw scan files) if need be.

I’ve been in touch with the encoder of the EYES WIDE SHUT project, and encoding has been complete for sometime, with an encode provided to gweedo16 in December 2021.

Any donors to this project should PM me with a screenshot of their donation! I’ve already reached out to some of you in this thread, but let me know if there’s anyone I’ve missed.

I’m very interested to see where this goes. EWS is a fantastic film and a new scan of an uncensored film print would be great.
Question: what quality was the print scanned at" 4K? 2k?
Cheers, have a great day

Did anything ever happen with this project? I would love to see a scan of this and will gladly donate if donations are still being taken.

Are there any updated on this project?

Do you think it might be ready in time for Christmas 2022?

Regards,
Clark

Any further progress on this? Finally got to see a film projection of this this weekend and its a project that badly needs a high-resolution scan of the beautifully textured original prints. The DVD and Blu-Ray seem very lackluster in comparison.

Hey all, as mentioned above, the encoding was done sometime ago. However, for some reason, the original project user gweedo16 never shared a copy with the donors.

I got in touch with the encoder directly. Let me know via PM if you previously donated and are interested in a copy!

Hello everybody who is interested in this project and/or donated. Apologies for being absent, not getting a copy of the scan to everyone who donated, and not giving status updates, been extremely busy.

I’ve been trying to get in touch with a colorist I got in contact awhile ago but no response. Thank you to The Aluminum Falcon for sharing with anyone that donated for this. I am new to all of this.

Of course, the reels were scanned and encoded digitally a long time ago for any donors to view and enjoy. To my eye though, it needed a lot of color correcting, some grain removal, etc. I wanted to make it a perfect product before sending it out to donors. I lost contact with some people I was working with and the project went by the wayside for a bit.

I believe I still have the hard drive with the scanned movie on it to share, but it seems the user The Aluminum Falcon has taken care of that. Sorry for the delay and PM me any questions. I hope to work on this project as much as possible in the future, but we’ll see.

Found this on myspleen

Eyes Wide Shut (1999) Uncensored Open Matte 1080p Upscale

I used Topaz for this. It looks great to me. Let me know what you think. (Especially about the grain. I used the 5 setting hoping for the best.)
I used the old PAL DVD from Rutracker so I’d be starting at 576i resolution compared to the 480i rez version here at the spleen. I used an eac3to guide I discovered recently to slowdown the video and audio from 25fps to 23.976fps. Very slick. From what I’ve read eac3to corrects pitch which I know folks would like here. I included the audio track from the NTSC spleen DVD for those that don’t want to use the converted audio. It should sync perfectly. Subtitles in the mkv are from the NTSC spleen DVD. From the MediaInfo it definitely looks like it’s BluRay compliant.

@Class316 saw that too! It’s definitely a very cool project. Though it is totally separate from this, which is a 35mm scan.

I’m now in correspondence with gweedo16 about this scan. 😃

some grain removal

You can’t be serious…

The scan is so noisy as shit

Yeah and it looks awesome. Just needs some color-correcting and it’s good to go. The movie was specifically shot to look grainy and that’s how it was in theaters because that’s how it was made. If ur degraining this one ur missing the point, son.

Talking to gweedo16, there will likely be multiple encodes of this Eyes Wide Shut scan in addition to the one that exists.

Like with 4K77 and 4K83, which also have supplementary DNR and AI versions, I think there’s room for multiple versions for this scan, but, of course, an untouched, ZERO DNR version will always be available.

I have experience with Topaz and noise reduction in DaVinci and have already told gweedo16 that I’m happy to help with the encoding. 😃

gweedo16 and I have been talking. It turns out that quite a few donors did not receive the initial viewable file of the scan (as an exclusive, limited perk for helping preserve this print).

If you donated and are interested in seeing the theatrical colors, message us, so you can be looped in on this and any subsequent encodes (BD-compatible and Topaz upscaled/enhanced).

I was reading DVD compare and came across this note:

Note that on ALL releases Warner made sure the soundtrack of the film was changed prior to home video/DVD releases. Also >- the intoning of a section of the Bhagavad Gita during the orgy sequence was replaced by other music.

Does this release have the Bhagavad Gita part?

Assuming that the scan does Include an uncensored DTS track, although I haven’t look the entirety of the scan

The uncensored audio has been ripped from the DTS discs and synced up to the UHD.

Likewise. Happy to donate for this one. It’s my favourite Kubrick film, and for everyone else I know it’s their least favourite 😆
