Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released) — Page 21

Hi guys

Regarding Yoda’s lines: I know I haven’t talked about it a whole lot in this thread, many of Yoda’s lines in Ep. II and III drive me nuts. All of the ones mentioned by InfoDroid have been changed. The “warm feelings” scene has been changed so that Yoda says, “Senator Amidala. In grave danger you are.” Padme: Do you have any idea who’s behind the attack?” It flows logically this way.

Regarding Yoda’s saving the clones: MTHaslett already brought this up. And a big deal will be made of this, whether I use Yoda’s theme or not, because it is the resolution of a cliffhanger. This will be accomplished through lots of dramatic music. So have no fear about this one- everything will be set right.

Regarding the validity of Lucas’ comments: Sometimes I listen; sometimes I don’t. If I’m reading the screenplay and I find a good idea that he deleted later for the film, I certainly don’t hesitate to use it. Or if there’s a good idea in the commentary (knowing that both Lucas and Williams were against having the asteroid chase devoid of music was helpful). However, he is often full of baloney and I pretty much only go by his comments if I agree with them anyway.

The soundtrack- the biggest changes I’m making are in the action music, aside from the music that I’m recording myself. The original love theme stays in, the mystery motif stays in, and the Kamino motif stays in. And I’m still going back and forth as to whether or not to score Anakin’s search for his mother with a full-blown rendition of “Anakin’s theme” from Episode I, or to save it until Episode III. But the music is getting VERY different and a LOT more synchronized with the action. Thanks to InfoDroid’s help, I have a lot more now to draw from for the soundtrack.

--------------------------
Working on several things right now and making GREAT progress: the very tricky Council’s Conference with Palpatine at the beginning, and the Jango/Obi-Wan space battle. The battle is scored and synchronized in such a way that I think your jaw will drop when you see it. MTHaslett, I’ve changed the color and sound effects for the explosion to my liking. Don’t want to boast here; I’m just VERY proud of my recent work on this battle. I scored it mostly with the Rite of Spring (which I actually didn’t expect to use for this scene).

The stereo mix is done, complete with dubbing, for the Anakin/Padme hug scene on Tatooine.

-Another thing I did was create a DVD quality Lucasfilm logo from the Ewok DVD. The one on the “Ewoks” was formatted and arranged a little differently, so I rearranged it to best represent the original. It’s slightly thicker type, but you wouldn’t notice it unless you compared the two side by side. For the fox logo, I think I’m going to use a DVD quality rip from “Alien,” made in the same time period as the SW trilogy and therefore has nearly exactly the same logo. Again, unless compared side by side, you won’t be able to tell the difference.

-“A long time ago…far away”- still working on a DVD quality frame of this.

-And best of all: Now I’m certain that I can encode a very high quality dual-layer DVD of this on my PC. I’ve tested it and ironed the bugs out- when I begin to finish scenes, it’ll be good to go.

I’ll try to go into more detail about the conference scene later- I’ve noticed some interesting basic mistakes in the actual directing for this scene. Filmmaking 101- the eye travels from left to right on the screen. Lots of stuff on the left and not much on the right means less focus on the right. The “right” contains Palpatine and the “left” contains everyone else. With a horizontal flip on the entire scene, Palpatine suddenly becomes a very noticeable figure in the frame…

Love to hear the updates, Trooperman. There are so many moments that I'm looking forward to seeing (and hearing) that I expect to have chills up and down my spine the whole time I screen this baby for the first time.

Infodroid makes a great argument for the way the Yoda arrival should play out-- I know you're already on board. I would only add that the impact of Yoda's arrival depends on the danger we sense for the jedi. It has to feel truly over. I can admit that the first time I saw the movie, I had no idea Yoda was about to fly in. I didn't notice that the music wasn't carrying the day-- I just noticed I didn't really care about any of the jedi who were there to save Anakin.

If I cared, and I thought they were in danger, then the surprise of Yoda's arrival would have had real impact.

Yeah, why make Oz a mystery when you can just tell everyone, "Hey, it's not a wizard, it's a man behind a curtain!"?

If Empire came out now, guaranteed Luke/Vader would sadly be on the internet way before its release.

Wow. Trooperman, I stand in awe of the work you've done to bring life to this project. I keep re-reading everything you've described in your changes and I really can't wait to see this one finished. The music is something that hasn't had the same thematic flow in the prequels as it did in the OT, and I'm very happy to hear you're going to such great lengths to provide continuity from one piece to the next.

The musical aspects of this project are very interesting and I can't wait to see how it turns out. The whole of ending of Attack of the Clones from the droid factory onward was of course practically a last minute addition to the film (while not without it's problems, is a whole lot better than the earlier boring Padme on Trial sequences) and had a serious hack-job for the score. It needs help.

Glad you found a good place for "Rite of Spring"! Also, I don't know if you have the RotS DVD yet, but in the deleted scene of Padme and the Senators meeting with Palpatine, it appears Lucas realized his "Filmaking 101" mistake from last time as the shot is reversed from the similar office shots in AotC (which you have now altered).

I had kinda wanted to audition for Lama Su, but I was on vacation at the time and once I got home, I looked at the thread and found out that it was already past the deadline

Nanner-
I am on deck to perform/record the Lama Su dialogue, but I was not auditioned. I stepped in when it seemed no one else wanted to. If you have the equipment and talent to get suitable quality recordings -- well maybe it's not too late to win the job.

I am happy to help Trooperman any way I can, but it will be more pleasant for me to hear someone else be Lama Su if you can take my place.

What do you say, Trooperman?

I say...GO FOR IT!!! Thank you!

The only thing I would be hesitant about is how MTHaslett feels about this, but he said it will be more pleasant for me to hear someone else be Lama Su if you can take my place.

So, if you're interested, I would just need a sample of your voice to make sure you don't sound like Mickey Mouse, and I can give you some more details at that point

If you're interested, PM me.

Hey Trooperman, I was thinking about the meadow scene, and how you were going to cut the end off, so Anakin isn't necessarily kidding about the dictatorship. I'm not sure how you were going to have the finished scene, but I'd put the cut ending back into the scene so it would read like this:

ANAKIN: Maybe he was the smart one.
PADMÉ: You really don't like politicians, do you?
ANAKIN: I like two or three, but I'm not really sure about one of them.
PADMÉ stares at ANAKIN. He looks back at her, straight faced, but can't hold back a smile.
PADMÉ: You're making fun of me!
ANAKIN: (sarcastic) Oh no, I'd be much too frightened to tease a Senator. I don't think the system works.
PADMÉ: How would you have it work?
ANAKIN: We need a system where the politicians sit down and discuss the problem, agree what's in the best interests of all the people, and then do it.
PADMÉ: That is exactly what we do. The trouble is that people don't always agree. In fact, they hardly ever do.
ANAKIN: Then they should be made to.
PADMÉ: By whom? Who's going to make them?
ANAKIN: I don't know. Someone.
PADMÉ: You?
ANAKIN: Of course not me.
PADMÉ: But someone.
ANAKIN: Someone wise.
PADMÉ: That sounds an awful lot like a dictatorship to me.
A mischievous little grin creeps across his face.
ANAKIN: Well, if it works...

Just my 2¢

Oh, and since you are doing such cool things to this film, could you put in a 1138 in there somewhere? Somehow it is not a Star Wars film with out it.

I agree with Sluggo.

ADigitalMan did the same thing in his edit and I really liked the way it gave a much more unsettling tone to the scene, and also backed up Padme's reasons for not wanting to get too involved with him at first. But, ADM's scene was mostly whittled away and came out just a little short.

With the way Sluggo suggested, you don't really lose any of the info or exchanges in the scene but you still get the effect, which I think would work even better.

But, that's, of course, for someone who isn't redubbing all of Anakin's dialogue. In your version, Trooperman, the possibilities are really endless as to what he could say.

P.S. - Maybe it would be a good idea for someone to compile a list of all the changes Trooperman has discussed and confirmed throughout this thread and tack it to the first post of the first page so we can reference it? Is that even possible?

How's everything on the dubbing side? I can't begin to imagine the difficulty in getting the slaughter confession just right. That was one of Hayden's better acted scenes (He actually displays emotion and it didn't feel awkward to watch). *I* must confess that I'm super eager to see what you've done with it since it probably requires a little more intensity performance-wise. Think about the last time you were really angry... That might help?

***

But the problem is these two characters have so very little to make their romance feel right. Every reason Padme has for not getting involved with Anakin is already there because he's becoming a Jedi. This scene is one of the worst offenders at presenting Padme with reasons she would NEVER touch this guy. He's a psycho and thinks a dictatorship would sure be neat.

The unsettling tone should be about Anakin's lack of trust in Obi Wan and not in his lack of trust in democracy. It's fine to have him ambivilent, but I this scene goes too far.

We've discusses this before but I forgot, is this scene going into SotDS?
(I happen to like it a great deal, when edited correctly.)

The meadow scene:

Sluggo, your description matches what I had originally planned for this scene. But... MTHaslett convinced me otherwise. He said that if I'm going to include this scene, Padme cannot suspect that Anakin is serious about the dictator thing- it has to be a complete tease, and the scene has to end this way. Because if she believes he is serious, this would turn her off very much. Since I'm dubbing Anakin, I can help this along even more by sounding playful and not serious.

Remember how this scene goes in my cut- we have a "Sound of Music" type thing with establishing shots of the green mountains and Naboo scenery (with full-blown love theme). We fade to Anakin and Padme rolling around on grass. Then, we go to their conversation. This shows a passage of time and their falling in love, implying that more is going on than we're seeing. But yes, this scene will be in SotDS.

The dubbing is going a little slowly- I need to start really getting on that. But if you remember, Anakin doesn't actually tell Padme about his slaughter in my cut. Again, Padme would be very much turned off upon discovering that Anakin goes around murdering people when he gets upset. Anakin might have a soliloquy or voice-over at the beginning or end of the scene, but maybe not; it depends on how it works, if it isn't corny, and if it fits with the overall style.

Maybe it would be a good idea for someone to compile a list of all the changes Trooperman has discussed and confirmed throughout this thread and tack it to the first post of the first page so we can reference it? Is that even possible?

That would be entirely possible, and I would do it if I had the time. In fact, I probably will have to do it, because even I'm forgetting some of your comments and the things I had decided 15 pages ago...if someone could go through and summarize for me, that would be great. I'd post it on the front page.

Oh, and since you are doing such cool things to this film, could you put in a 1138 in there somewhere? Somehow it is not a Star Wars film with out it.

Absolutely! But you may need to remind me of it in the future.

I don't know if you have the RotS DVD yet

No, I didn't get it yet. I should probably get that soon...

THE CONFERENCE SCENE DILEMMA

conference problem

The clip above, again, is unfinished. Most noticeably, the transition is wrong and something is wrong with the beginning of the closeup of Palpatine- easily fixed. I just rendered the unfinished footage from the storyboard. But the thing is....notice how in the first wide shot of the conference room, Mace and the white bearded fellow talk, but it is very clear that their lips aren't moving. I could crop them out of the shot using the full-screen DVD, but that would completely butcher the framing of this shot, and I don't want to do it by any means. The only solution seems to be to somehow subtlely blur Windu's mouth only, so that it is unclear whether his lips are moving or not. I can't really do this, though- I have a really hard time doing professional looking shots that only change a small part of the frame. Maybe I can make a request in the General Preservation forum for someone else to do this one shot for me?

It's coming, guys

RE: Conference Room

I see a couple solutions -- (first I have to say how awesome it is to see the shot flipped) -- but I don't know the whole picture yet of what changes are being made, so maybe these solutions will help and maybe they won't.

I don't like the idea of blurring Sam J's lips. I think we need to work in ways to cut around the problem and use only synch dialogue. So the problem comes from using that long beautiful master shot and making it match the dialogue.

Solution #1 is to have the line "He is a politcal idealist...not a murderer" play over the preceding Exterior shot. Then finish the line as we cut in but before any non-synch problems can be detected-- maybe a half a second or so.

Solution #2 is to move Sam Jackson's line "He was a jedi..." until after Palpatine's line. Let Palpatine's line be the response to the bearded guy and let it come when we cut inside, as Palpatine starts to talk.

I think that'll solve things. I even wish there were some silence between the lines-- silence that speaks volumes about the gulf between the jedi and Palpatine-- and about the graveness of this situation. But at any rate it looks great.

EDITED TO ADD: I know the logic may not seem crystal clear here, but I think non-linear dialogue often sounds more natural than A-B, A-B, A-B. So I'm suggesting that we do A-C-B-D. Like this:

EXT. Chancellor's office - Day
Beard guy (V.O.): He is a political idealist, not a murderer.

INT. Chancellor's office - Continuous
Palpatine: But more and more star systems are joining the seperatists.

Mace: You know Dukoo was once a jedi. He couldn't assassinate anyone.

Palpatine: ...I don't know how much longer I can...

Mace: If they do break away...

Palpatine: My negotiations will not fail...

Mace: If they do break away...

I'm not sure I understand the flow of this dialogue entirely. I think we get to the "My negotiations will not fail" line a little fast. Maybe Mace needs to finish his thought first and then have Palpatine's line. But then I don't know the footage or the whole scene yet.

I just know, using what's there, you can get through the master a little easier with my suggestion. I also think the master can be cut out of sooner if you have coverage of some of the lines, say a shot of Mace saying his line or any part of his line so you can cut out of and then back into the moving master.

Re: Lightsaber duel shots:

That new mix on the lightsabers is awfully good, Trooperman (okay, it's INCREDIBLE!). What an impact. I'm going to find out who you are, tie you to your computer and make you finish this NOW if you keep showing off such good work. ;-)

The animated duel shot in the original mix is so horrible-- I never noticed it before. I thought you must have cut that in from a video game. Weird.

The final shot of your version shows Yoda's shadow coming. In the b.g. is Dukoo's motorcycle. It looks fake-- do you think desaturating that shot could help?

Just wondering. Great great work.

Author
Time
Trooperman:

First off, GREAT decision to throw in that little Emperor's cue from ROTJ at the beginning of the conference scene! That immediately takes us right back to the OT and lets the audience know they can expect to see Palpatine. Magnificent. Little things like that are what's going to take this project beyond anyone's expectations.

As far as the dialogue, I think there's something that seems odd about Palpatine's "My Negotiations will not fail". I'm not sure if the problem is with something visual or auditory. There's just something about the cut. Maybe MTHaslett's comment about leaving some space might help.

BUT, I will say that I love the placement of Mace's and Ki-Adi-Mundi's dialogue as well as the flip of the frame. I feel you've already VASTLY improved this scene, and I'm sure that will extend to help the painfully stilted dialogue delivery in the subsequent portions with Natalie Portman.

The lightsaber duel - 100% on point. Sounds much more ferocious. With this you've proven that sound is so, so important to the experience of a film, and the results you've come out with are simply incredible. Consider me very, very impressed, pleasantly surprised, happy and excited for what this is going to bring.

I'm sitting here salivating for more, as I'm sure we all are. Excellent work, My Friend.

To MTH and, CC: Good luck trying to compile the list of changes. From what I remember (aside from the obvious) Mace windu's lightsaber will be changed to either green or, blue. Trooperman: (confrence) I like the changes but, the wipe seems a bit jerky/slow at the beggining. <Edit> Oh, yeah, and, I like MTH's suggestion of dialog. Though, mabye instead of "If they do break away" twice. At the end he could say "If they do. You must realize there aren't enough jedi to protect the republic." "Do you really think it will come to war?" "We're keepers of the peace not soldiers." "Master Yoda" (hologram guy interferes) "Send them in" "We will discuss this matter later" Something like that.... </edit>
(sabers) I really like this change. *thumbs up*

<edit>MTH: Oh, yeah, and, here's what there in the original scene:

"I don't know how much longer I can hold off the vote, my friends. More and, more star systems are joining the seperatists."
"If they do break away"
"I will not let this republic that has stood for a thousand years be split in two. My negotiations will not fail."
"If they do, you must realize that there aren't enough jedi to protect the republic. We're keepers of the peace not soldiers."
"Master Yoda, do you really think it will come to war?"
"The dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see the future is."
Hologram: The loyalist comittee has arrived your honor(subtitle).
"good"
Hologram: More untranslated words.
"send them in. We will discuss this matter later."
"Senator, Amidala. Your tragedy on the landing platform. Terrible, seeing you alive brings warm feelings to my heart."
"Do you have any idea who's behind this attack?"
"Are intelligence points to disgruntled spice miners on the moons of Naboo."

There's more but, I don't want to type it all down. It's mostly the Dooku dialog....</edit>

Trooperman, great work on the lightsaber duels. The original cut of Anakin and Dooku had way too much footage of them just waving their sabers over their heads. I watched Clones the other night and that's where I realised it. The end of Clones just sucked. Way too much good timing in the arena battles. As soon as Anakin, Obi-wan and Padme were in trouble, the Jedi showed up. Same goes for the arrival of the Clones. Glad to see Yoda show up before Anakin gets his arm hacked off. Well, maybe at the same time. I hope you are planning to maybe overlap some of the arena battle as well. And don't forget about that 1138

A definte good start to the conference room scene, and I'd agree with MTH and Twister's dialogue suggestions. As Twister mentioned the wipe seems a bit off, but the music intro is a great touch. The scene reversal as well, but I'd encourage you not to reverse the closeups of Palpatine in his chair; it looks rather odd. Of course if you have another reason for this I don't realize, you know best. The lightsaber duel is looking really exciting!

I've compiled a rough draft list of the SotDS edits, which I will put in it's own post to set it apart.
