This film is not only very well edited, but also, for me, it fixes the biggest mistake that Boba Fett and his Din and Grogu-centric chapters had: making them meet again without generating a tension that gives weight to the reunion. If in the middle of the series of another character you introduce as a secondary plot what is the main one of another, it feels strange. However in your films, taking that reunion to the end of a third film without Grogu appearing until then, you feel that in relation to the previous ones there is a weight and a burden for the separation. It feels that the protagonist is Mando, the plot is dilated and the ending works better. Anyway, you have made my new canon of how I am going to see these series (single episodes that shine apart).

The audio mix in this one works perfectly for me, I don’t notice any difference with the Disney + versions and the transitions between plots are smooth and elegant.

Thanks Warhorn. I think most people found the Grogu-Mando reunion odd, and it is probably the only misstep so far in Mandy’s story. What I ultimately want to do is move the reunion to the start of the next Movie, but that will depend on what Season 3 entails.

I’m not an editor, but as a viewer even this felt like it could have been 1 hour shorter. Many individual scenes just felt like they dragged a touch too long.

I agree with this.

I think you had a good idea intertwining the Boba and Mando storylines, as well as putting Mando in the beginning of the story and moving his reunion with Grogu to the end of the movie. Making this a Mandalorian Episode 3 is a good choice, too.

But I still think A LOT could be cut, really. Even entire scenes, like the “Holding Court” one, could be totally discarded in my opinion. The Boba Fett story unfortunately is too weak to sustain so many screentime (even in an edit that cut the fat like yours). This is Mando Episode 3 after all, so it shouldn’t be necessary for Boba to gain so much prominence, since he is not the protagonist of this story anymore in your edit. Besides that, to me Boba still seems to require Fennec’s approval on certain matters, instead of taking control of the situation, as we expected him to do from the start. And yes, he still talks a lot to a person who’s always been so quiet in the Star Wars lore.

Anyway, if you ever plan to make some kind of change to your edit in the future, my advice to you is this: make Djin be the real protagonist of this story, since Mando storyline is the strongest point of BOBF, and as for Boba, leave just what is really necessary for us to understand his arc. I like Boba and I care more for him than for Mando, but in the BOBF, less is more with him. Just my two cents.

Thank you so much for sharing your edit.

Here is my edit of the Book of Boba Fett. With Din Djarin’s story being a surprise feature and the Boba portions being a bit disappointing with a lot of flashback scenes, I have decided to edit this as episode 3 of the Mandalorian.

Awesome edit so far my only real hiccup across all three edits is the Beskar spear. Say you view these three in isolation from the actual show it comes out of nowhere and then suddenly in Episode 3 you hear he gained it from a Jedi. Which is an event we never saw.

Is there plan to include the handing over of the beskar spear in future edits? Such as maybe in Ahsoka?

His (and all) the speech is quite isolated to their own audio channel on the 5.1 so it’s pretty easy to cut out a lot of Boba’s unnecessary dialog when his helmet is on.

I’ve already cut and altered a lot of Boba’s dialogue in an attempt to make him a stronger character.

Yes, that needs addressing. I had planned to put the Beskar scenes back into episode 2. However, it really affected the pacing of the movie so I ultimately left it out. I need to alter the Mando-Armourer dialogue to remove the Jedi reference.
There will be a V2 of this movie released after Season 3 of Mando, so I’ll do it then.

Personally I don’t feel like it would affect the pacing too much it’s just hard to edit naturally since it’s in town and the people seem to be celebrating which they shouldn’t be as the village battle was cut. But it’s also a major plot point for the climax (the beskar spear) so I feel like it should be there somehow.

The problem is that season 2 is essentially a series of quests, which makes a movie edit feel like a very long journey. I just felt that the Beskar spear quest needed to be cut to speed up the plot progression.

Hi smudger9,

Wow, this edit really saved The Book of Boba Fett for me! This is now my go to for Mando ‘season 2.5’ for sure.

It feels like it was always meant to be this way (although it probably wasn’t) and makes the story so so much better set up. Besides the obvious cuts, that favor the edit - less of the mods, less of Boba’s incompetence as a gangster boss - I really like the back and forth between the Din and Boba storylines. Especially the choice to open and close the movie with Din makes it more like a Mandalorian movie, where Boba plays an important part than the half-assed Boba Fett show that midway decides to follow Din again, because he’s more interesting.

Although I liked the integration of Grogu in the final battle in the original, I agree that it flows better to not have him there. And maybe his powers were a little bit too strong in that fight in the first place. Anyways, I would’ve never imagined that Grogu could be cut out soo seamlessly - I even opened the original a few times to check, what you have done to make it look this smooth! 😃 The ending was expertly crafted as well. The decision to put Grogu’s jedi training to the end and then end the movie felt super satisfying.

Awesome work!

Wow. Looks like you binge-watched the whole trilogy! Strong work.

Whilst this isn’t the best of the three movies, it was by far the most satisfying because the series itself wasn’t great.

It was a lot of fun weaving Din and Boba’s stories and then bringing them together for the finale.

Removing Grogu from the final battle was probably my most time consuming editing endeavour. I persevered because it made for a much better story to move the Luke scenes to the end. The result was definitely acceptable, but there are some cuts that aren’t quite perfect. The music edits were also tricky!

Thanks again for the feedback.

I’ve just uploaded a minor update. This version removes Mando’s mention of the Beskar spear being the gift of a Jedi. He now ignores the armourer’s question and talks about it being able to block a lightsaber. Not an amazing solution, but no worse than “a good question for another time” 😂.

Hopefully season 3 will provide some Mando or armourer lines to provide a better solution.

I’ve heard great things about your work and would very much appreciate links to your 3 Mando edits to prep for S3.

I finally got around to checking out all 3 of your Mando movies, and I must say Smudger, these are fantastic! I really love what you accomplished with the BOBF content. Completely seamless with the Mando content.

After hearing Favreau’s comment about Grogu being with Luke for 2 years (I haven’t seen Favreau walk this back as a slip-up) I’m wondering if there may be a way to imply this better. Since you were able to seamlessly remove Grogu from the Tatoonie scenes and leave him only for the ending of your 3rd movie, I’m wondering if it may be better suited for the opening of the 4th movie. This way you could imply a 2 year timejump (or even any amount of timejump) in the crawl.

This would also help with how we see such drastic changes with characters and locations. Such as the Armorer being on that new planet instead of the “ring city” we saw her on in BOBF, also the massive change in Navaro.

Though this would require you to chop up your Luke and Grogu scenes. The first training scenes imply that Grogu hasn’t been training with Luke for very long. So leave the ones where he’s learning to jump and what not as the end of the 3rd movie. Then open the 4th movie with Din arriving on Luke’s planet, have it play out the same, but instead jump to the scene of Grogu jumping along the rocks. It shows that he’s had a level of progression since the end of your 3rd movie with his small jumps.

Grogu and Din being back together so soon has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and even though explaining it in a crawl that time has passed is only a band-aid on this issue, it’s still at least a little better than what we have been given.

I’m not the best at explaining everything in text form, but hopefully some of that came across coherently lol. I haven’t even attempted to edit this idea into realty, so it may not be feasible. But I’m gonna try playing around with your 3rd movie edit and see if the idea even works.

Thanks WDR! It was always my intention to move the Luke/Grogu scenes to the start of the next Movie. Favreau’s comments have reinforced that position!
