2001: A Space Odyssey Special edition with CGI

Stanley Kubrick classic sci-fi film 2001 is to be complete redone much in the same way as George Lucas has done with his beloved Starwars trilogy.

All original footage in space using models on fires is to be replaced with CGI shots done by Industrial light and magic, the original orchestral score is to be remixed by notable artists including The Prodigy and the Anti Christ him self Marilyn Manson.

The original DVD copies of the film will be destroyed and anyone owning the original DVD, VHS or even laserdisc for that matter will be asked to return there discs or tapes to the nearest police headquarters where again they will be destroyed. This off course includes a complete recall of any store carrying the original film. So far a timeline for this procedure has not been confirmed but anyone attempting to keep there original versions will be hunted down by a CIA, MI6 operation code named “Journey Beyond the Stars” which was indeed the 1967 working title

Sweet baby Jesus, don't you ever say that again! Don't you EVER suggest the idea of altering any of Kubrick's masterpiece! Thank GOD Eyes Wide Shut was released in an unaltered version over here.

I remember that a few months before Kubrick died, there was this rumor that he wanted to re-film the whole stargate sequence from 2001, replacing Douglas Trumbull's incredible SFX with crappy CGI. Of course I belive it was not true (we will never know, now that he's dead), as Kubrick is not a talentless lunatic as GL is.

Mildly amusing.

Yes, thank god we have the masterpiece that is 2001: A Space Odyssey in it´s original and unaltered state. Just a simple cleanup and enhancement of the original film negatives was done for the brilliant DVD edition that was released a while back. That is one movie that´s going to be looked at in 100 years and people are going to be marveling at this movie with much more respect and admiration than Lucas´s heavily modified not so special "special editions" of the Star Wars Trilogy. No doubt. Now on the other hand if Lucas were to remaster the OT and release it (sure!), future generations would be kinder to his work and appreciate it more in a historical and artistic context.

They actually are going to release a new DVD of 2001. Supposed to have much better PQ. It can use it a bit too, as some of the scenes show a lot of edge enhancment.

Sorry, I did. Bored the piss out of me. Not that I'm against Kubrick or anything, but he is very much hit or miss with me. I hated 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut (I wouldn't even want to bother with the uncensored), and I just didn't get Dr. Strangelove. But I loved A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket. I have yet to see The Shining.

Look at so many of the names on these boards. Very few of us should be taken seriously. Hence why we did take you seriously.

You must be from Britain if you're getting the DVDs on Monday. Am I right?

I liked 2001 enough to buy it in widescreen both on VHS and DVD.

Yeah Bossk i'm in the UK currently i just got the VHS of the originals, the last set before the special editions. I did have the special editions on VHS but seeing as there not complete, u can tell when the've changed something which is what i remember some guy saying on the making off, they didn't want u to notice every time something has been changed.

But of course u do notice cause most of us have seen the films so many times they commited to memory so any tampering even the slightest of things we notice. To be honest i don't think the originals will ever be released on DVD, its like asking Ridley Scott to release the inferior version of Blade Runner (the one with the Harisson Ford talk over). The whole point of a directors cut is that is replaces the original, u could argue these are special editions. But special editions usually add scenes or include improved special effects, but the whole han shoots first argument is pointless, Lucas has re-edited that scene for a purpose.

So essential these DVD's are special editions/Directors cuts they've replaced the originals.

I loved Lost in Translation, too. If you guys liked that one, go see Garden State. Good stuff.

Call me a nitpicker, but the "original" version of Blade Runner is available as the pan-and-scan side of the current DVD. I put original in quotes because it's the more violent, unrated version that was originally put out on VHS.

Lost in Translation is very good, it's more like a haiku poem than a film... Way better than the overrated "The Virgin Suicides", Sofia Coppola's previous film. And of course, the soundtrack is by Air, great musical group.
