The ending is too weird for my tastes. I keep on trying to get it, but I keep on failing. Empire I can atleast understand.

Warbler, you gotta try the ending of 2001 set to Pink Floyd's Echoes. Mind blowing.

And for the record, I actually *don't* do drugs, though I'm sure if you do, it'll take it to a whole new level.

2001 is more than a film. It's a moving ("moving" as in "kinetic," not "tugging at the heart-strings") piece of brilliant, hi-concept art. The sequel is a great sci-fi flick and gripping story, but nothing more. The original is just something greater. Swan Lake on celluloid.

Sorry but I am a simple person with a simple mind. 2001 is above me and beyond me. It is not somthing I can grasp or understand. No matter how hard I try, I always fail.

I've heard 2001 was pretty lame. Like they have a hairy human hand banging soemthing with a hammer at the start, and say it's an advanced ape learnign to use tools or something.

I like to consider myself a reasonable movie buff. Hell, I even write an article entitled "Awesome Movies You've Never Heard Of" for my school paper (for which I recently reviewed "Evil Dead" and "Dead Alive".....hey, they're a bunch of high school n00bs, what can I say?). But I can't for the life of me sit all the way through 2001. More specifically, I can't stay AWAKE. I don't want to radiate the notion that I'm a typical 16-year-old who is used to Hollywood's "fasterstrongerloudernow!" approach these days. Hell, one of my favorite horror films is the 1922 silent "Nosferatu", which is definitely not a fast-paced film. Perhaps 2001 just isn't for everyone.

Warbler: the novel, "2001: A Space Oddysey" is a really good read, easy to understand, and actually helps you connect the dots while watching the movie. It's a literary oddity because the movie was based on an Arthur C. Clarke short story, and then the full novel was finished AFTER the movie was done. So it's sort of an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation, if you follow me Find it at your library, and I think your enjoyment of 2001 will increase tenfold.

I enjoy watching Empire Strikes Back more, obviously, as it's a movie that's meant to appeal to popular tastes, but there's no denying 2001 is a much more expertly made film, in almost every single aspect. At least to me. That said, I don't put it in nearly as much as I do Empire.

Perhaps I read the book somtime then.

But, I seem to recall 2001 being decussed on the forum before, and somone said the ending wasn't meant to be understood. That is somthing I can't understand.

the ending is open to interpretation for some, yes, but Clarke offers a pretty definite interpretation of that ending and it makes a boatload of sense. I was pretty much already there before I read the book, and it ended up reinforcing a lot of my interpretations of that end sequence.

At the least, the novel is a great piece of sci-fi writing on it's own, and you should at least get some enjoyment out of that.

I have done this several times. It's great, because it combines my favorite movie AND my favorite song (excluding classical pieces).

While 2001 might be difficult to comprehend, and some might not like it at all, I don't see it as boring or slow-paced. It's not that long, and perhaps the only true slow parts are the landing on the moon and Dave changing the antenna equipament on space. I never sensed it as slow or boring, and it's not that hard to watch it - hell, I've seen it dozens of times... Also, be aware that Kubrick has cut a lot of footage after the premiere (about 20 minutes) which are now sadly lost, to make the film run faster - I'd sell my SOUL to see those lost trims again!
