Scooby-Doo (2002) 4K 35mm Restoration (OPEN MATTE) (Request)

I have just seen one of my favourite films going for less than $1k on eBay as an Open Matte. Is it possible for someone here to start a fundraiser to get this bought and scanned? I would love to do it myself but as I haven’t done it before I think it would be better left to the people that have done this before.

For me, it would cost £1,104.31 total.

US $799.99 (£666.66)
+ US $289.04 (£240.87)
+ US $236.14 import charges (£196.78)

Scanning I’m not quite sure about, I have no clue where I would get it scanned here in the UK for a decent price.
Something that would be able to be a fundraiser would be something like a Gugusse Roller or Kinograph.

You can scan it in the US if you buy it (so no import charges and postage should be more like $50). Scanning about $350 (on a real scanner).

I live in the UK so scanning would be about £600 per reel. If there’s any way to fundraise to get someone from the US to buy this it would be greatly appreciated as I think shipping to a US address would cause to many issues from here.

This is the type of quality you can get out of the Gugusse Roller.

I have a scanner in London that could do the entire scan for less than £600, but it’s not worth sending the film from the US to the UK just for scanning. It can be done to higher quality in the US - join my discord channel and send me a message there.

Which is very rough on film and cannot handle 1,000ft reels let alone 2,000ft reels. The only things that DenisCR can scan on it is trailers and other similarly short reels like music videos, snipes, and theatre ads. The Gugusse Roller is a Raspberry Pi project really, not a film scanner.

I’ll make an account and contact you, I can start a fundraiser and get it sent to you in the US.

If you live in the US PLEASE send this to someone like https://twitter.com/kinekovideo. They use a 6.5K ScanStation and the quality is out of this world. The scanner in the UK suggested is also a good option if you live in the UK. I really advise against scanning with the Gugusse Roller or any of those homemade scanners as they do not do proper high dynamic range scans and are not stable for a feature film and might damage your print. Kineko Video has a very good reputation and will take care of the materials you send.

Yes the film was sent out on the 24th. Should get scanned on the 3rd of April. Full 35mm Film was $900 shipping was $160x2 (to get it shipped back) plus maybe around $340 for it to be scanned won’t know once it is done. I will update everyone. Bobson Dugnutt recommended me to someone. He made an awesome extended version of Scooby a while back.

Really interesting to see the full frame in these clips, and the transfer looks great! I’m sure the Blu-Ray is accurate to what was released theatrically, but some shots have always seemed a little too cropped down. Would love to see the full film like that, whenever you decide to put it out there.

For some reason the transfer didn’t take the quality. But check out my IG unboxing_boxes better quality videos.

I would love to help out if you are still accepting donations. Also will you be giving out encodes for those that pitch in?

Very interested to donate to this as well to get this made and check this out.

I was looking at the clips on YouTube and it looks like you did some very strange degraining in post and added a frozen grain filter on top. What was the reasoning for doing this? It looks very smeary.

It’s YouTube. I tried my best with what I had

There is a lot of damage to the film which is making me have second thoughts because it is expensive to fix. The videos on You Tube are the raw scan I received it was a lower quality than 4k reason was because I had to inspect it to see if there was any fixes needed. Some seconds of the film are missing because at theater they cut those few seconds. Its cost almost two grand already. $1000 for the film $400 for the scan. $200 to fix the the imperfections. 12 seconds of 4k footage was 1GB with out sound. So that’s why I got a lower quality version because of how much space it needs. Like Venny said reason why it looks smeary. Thank you!
