I’ve been getting a lot of PMs about people wanting access to the folder. If you didn’t already have access before from donating I’m not going to give access unless it’s someone working on the project directly. I will not be handing out downloads for many reasons so please don’t ask. If you have donated and can’t access the folder for some reason I will make sure to fix that, but please do not clutter my DMs with download requests if you haven’t contributed anything to the project

Personally, I DM’d because it was mentioned in your post from a week ago, but even then I noted I’d be able to wait until the public release.

That said, I might have misread your post. I found out about this when googling on a whim; wasn’t expecting to actually discover that someone was able to scan/restore a print!

Take your time, Venny. I can wait.

No worries I wasn’t talking about your in particular I had a lot of people PMing me. Just wanted to put a message out there for everyone to make sure people knew

Where’s the link where I can donate?

I too would love to donate. If anything, just to give back for a job well done.

Also, haven’t been able to find your Twitter, Venny.

Jerry told me that the color chart was delivered, and is sending some new pics to Venny soon.

I’m glad I ended up with a copy of the laserdisc.
Even though it appears to be the same scan as the DVD
with the beginning of the movie looking like it was scanned
during an earthquake, the coloring is completely different.
I believe it is much closer the original film than the DVD.
You do get the superior audio track in my opinion.
I ended up transferring an upscaled version of the laserdisc
and creating a Blu-ray for me to watch until the 4k restoration
is complete. I included the 24 Bit 96 kHz audio from the laserdisc
and the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from the DVD for comparison.
I also included the English, French and Spanish subtitles from
the DVD.
If anyone is interested, I can provide a link to download this version.
I have an ISO file that can be burned to a single layer BD-R so you
get a hard copy with menus and I made an MKV file that is the
same size. PM me for the link.

How do the laserdisc and DVD tracks compare, specifically?

I have a lot of experience retiming subtitles (.srt, .ass, etc.), both by processing them by writing programs, and by manually using things like Aegisub, Subtitle Edit, and a handful of auto-retiming github projects. I’ve also done a good bit of work with hard subs. I’d be happy to help out if you need anything.

I’m taking a few weeks vacation in a month, so I’ll have some free time then if you’re still looking for help with that then. If you can give me a finalized copy of the A/V whose timings definitely won’t change, I’d be happy to fix the English subs and then retime the other languages based on that for you. Don’t wait up for me, though - I won’t have any free time for the next 4 weeks, so if you find someone else to help just ask them instead.

Btw, I just found out there were like 20 minutes worth of deleted scenes that were cut from the original production? Any chance of those being included in the future?

Never heard of this. Where’d you?

Read it on wikipedia earlier today. There’s an interview where you can hear about it, but it’s an hour long, so I didn’t go through it. Based on a youtube comment, though, it sounds like the cut portions actually might not have made it to the animation phase, so I guess maybe there’s nothing to add after all.

Outta curiosity what was your upscale method? HDMI Box or simple software scaling?

Seems rather unlikely, but wouldn’t it be great if Criterion would pick up this restoration for plans on an official Blu-ray release for the film’s (belated) 35th anniversary?

Wouldn’t happen that way, nah. They’d license from the current owner and use an existing IP, IN, or the negative if anyone knows where it is. They don’t just work with people doing under the table theatrical print scans.

Ok so small update:
Because of something out of our control the BLT scans are no longer on Google Drive. We will find an alternative (possibly FTP or torrent) but for now, no downloads are available. I will keep everyone updated on when I can get them back up, but rest assured the files are safe on an LTO Tape and I have them backed up on my own hard drive so they will not be lost anytime soon.

Are you doing everything to remove all of the dirt and film damage?

Are you gonna make a torrent for people who really want it.

Not to be rude but you keep asking this, and there’s not really any reason to. They’re doing the best they can. Whatever largely visible damage is there will be dealt with. It’s in good hands.

This thread has been relatively quite for a few months now with no major updates in a while so I’m wonder if there have been any substantial new updates on the projects. There’s no rush I’m just wondering what the current status on everything is and want to try to make this thread a little more active.

I’ve been creeping on this forever, but haven’t posted, since I have nothing to contribute. All I can say is that my wife absolutely LOVES this movie, and the DVD we have just isn’t a good way to watch the film. I’m very excited for the public release, whenever it’s ready.

I am in the same boat… well not forever but since I started looking for a good recording of the movie a few days ago. The wife and I were really excited when we found the DVD but the quality was subpar, at best.

I can’t tell you how detrimental this movie was to my childhood and how much I would love to support this endeavor financially. I’m actually recently laid off and a little sore about it… money is tight and things are rough but I’m on the prowl for a new job.

Anyway I wish everyone involved all of the luck and support in the world. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

Just so everyone knows, I am the person previously known as Bridger12. I got myself a new computer, and I completely forgot my log-in information, and the cookies didn’t save. So I had to start a different account, with a new username. Anyway, how is the work coming along, Venny? I feel like I really need to update Jerry soon.
