Now you see, this really bugs me. There's no reason to classify her as a "prime example of a fine human being." Did you hear about her law suit against Outkast because of their song? For someone who's only famous because she stood up (or in this case, sat down) for her constitutional rights, she sure seems hypocritical. Trying to go against Outkast's freedom of speech. It seems like her mind had achieved "Holier than thou" status.
And also, several other people had done what she did, before she did it. What about Homer Plessy, who sat in one of the "white" cars in an attempt to integrate the East Louisiana Railroad, years before Rosa Parks did anything? See, Parks just got lucky with her judge and jury. She just got lucky that she was the one who finally won the fight, even though many others had fought the same fight. Why should she be considered a "prime example of a fine human being" just because she got lucky, while hundreds of other people who did the same thing get overlooked?
She did one commemorable thing 50 years ago, and now for some reason lots of people put her on the same pedestal as George Washington or Mother Teresa, or like in your post, Martin Luther King. Those are prime human beings. And although Park's act was with out doubt brave, it wasn't something that should shoot her up to "prime human being" status. Millions of people every day commit brave acts, or commemorable acts, or amazing acts. Rosa Parks is no better than those people. She's not holy. She's not prime. She just did one brave thing, and got lucky. In fact, we're all equal, correct? So by you calling anyone a "prime example of a fine human being," you're placing humans in specified ranks. What exactly does one have to do to become a member of the "fine human being" club? What does someone have to do to become more excellent than someone else? Please give me some insight as to what the rules are. In the mean time, I disavow my former statement of George Washington, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King being "prime" human beings, until we all agree on what makes someone else better than others.
I don't know why I'm pointing all this stuff out. Maybe I'm just a cynical jerk, or maybe I just want to remind you that "heroes" are humans too. And though I agree Rosa Parks may have been a butterfly that caused a hurricane, I still don't think she herself should be considered the hurricane. Keep in mind several other butterflies were flapping their wings as well.
Anyway, RIP. At least she died the best way possible. Peacefully in her sleep.
