Great stuff!

Just realised the deleted scenes show Leia without her gloves on (naturally enough, indoors) in her Hoth outfit. Something I don’t think happened in the final film.

Are you going to include the brief outtake of 2-1B removing the bacta mask from Luke’s face?

Lookin’ pretty great, Bob!

Regarding the Lobot scene, I think you could potentially address the missing slug of footage by cutting to the footage from outside the door, but play it in reverse as if it is being opened by Lobot. I think it would fit since the door is already moving up when it cuts to that second shot of Lobot.

So the order would be:
• Lobot avoids the troops and starts walking toward door.
• Outside door, we see it begin to raise open (footage reversed)
• Cut back to Lobot, waiting for the door to raise all the way open.

I just finished my edit of this cut for my ESB-X (extended) edition. I was going to post after I fix a few more dust from it. I added a little movement of him going to the door before the wide shot, but still feels off. I never thought of a reverse shot of door coming up and then…this is a great Idea I will try and maybe post both version and see what everything thinks.

My version is more inline with matching a clean version of the film. Bluray/Adywan’s etc.

and great work Bobson on your footage and colorization I have played around recently using adobe PS on each frame with their new neural AI filters to auto color…saves alot of time and all automatic…will try to post a sample in a week + the process I used as it has to go back and forth between PS and AE.

I am working on restoring this scene now and when I get to the black and white I too need to colorize. Bobsun, Do you have below (just the colorize full frame and lightsabre add in a full size edit?

I want to use for sure that lightsabre as overlay since it is already done and looks perfect

https://vimeo.com/698967441

Stitching it all together is the part I am working on now as far as sequence and audio to use for the bar being cut per yoda’s challenge + extra live action shot of bar on swamp ground how to show the bar in half or 7 pieces as yoda says from script I believe? (or maybe just leave it to luke missing it entirely and we see the bar fall or on the ground, that would easier to shot that shot I guess and just not sliced)

will you do this with anh scenes too and upgrade your anh edit??
thanks

My current SW77 edit is only the Biggs scenes, and I’m still really happy with that cut I did back in 2018. If anything, I’ll go back and do both an expanded cut based on the TC, and then a “”“”“”““Lost Cut””“”“”“”" that restructures it based on the Fourth Draft. Due to the sheer amount of B/W footage in the extended Cantina scene, I’d have to consider what to use and what not to use ultimately. Jenny is an absolute yes though.

This is just amazing. There’s the same kind of giddiness involved as when the deleted scenes were first unveiled. The idea that the films you enjoyed could be given a totally new but old look. And I think in some ways, the deleted scenes of ESB are even more mysterious than the ones from SW77, just because of the glimpses the trailers and tie-in media give.

Thank you! I wasn’t too familiar with how much was cut before I started digging in. As for the first SW, we basically know exactly how much was cut and about 90% of the most remarkable footage has shown up. As for ESB and ROTJ, not so much.

Tack said:

If only we had access to some other remarkable trims, like the cut Cloud City bluescreen footage or the complete Wampa attack footage (which, apparently according to Star Wars Aficionado and JW Rinzler, was filmed). Special editions be damned! This should be the alternative!

All the Wampa stuff was absolutely filmed, as bad as it all looks. Damn shame they didn’t put all of it out.

smops

I haven’t heard of the bluescreen stuff actually being shot, I’m assuming you mean the balcony scene, which was dropped due to VFX limitations and filming scheduling problems. But there is a lot of bits and pieces missing entirely.

Here’s a before and after of the new lightsaber training. There’s no soundmix yet, the music is just temporary. I’m very happy with how the colourisation came out.

how do you do your lightsaber effects?

The expanded opening scene is not really how it’s meant to play out.

It’s part of the probe droid scene outside the base.

A few things get shifted about like the probe droid scene near the shield generator comes before the shots inside the command center with riekan. They are meant to be listening to an outpost gun turret radio transmission when it get’s cut off.

Then the scene with the probe droid destroying the gun turret as you have but with the cut music and sound effect.

Next come a shot of snowspeeders.

Than Han and chewie face off against the probe droid.

I like your work though looks good the Luke training scene. Keep it up.

I can send you a video about the probe droid sequence.

https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/156984006

There are quite a few missing Special effects shots in Empire and a whole deleted gun battle between Bespin guards and the Stormtroopers although it is unclear if it was ever put on film but it is in the script.

You should try to find the music spotting score to footage for the Asteroid chase so many shots missing…

Found it for you

https://vimeo.com/328696041?ref=tw-share

This is the footage put to how the music was scored to the film with black for the blanks. In fact this is more outlandish than anything I ever thought was missing but I knew it had stuff missing.

Using the music score as a guide I identified the following.

The snowspeeders are shown taking off out of Echo base
The falcon is shown lifting off and the Doors were to also open just in time
Space slug sequence slightly in wrong order “Cave Collapsing POV cockpit shot missing”
Falcon is shown flying towards Bespin in Space from the Iris Wipe then that flows into a drop through the clouds to the shot in the film.
music wrong on rescueing luke from under cloud city and Lando saving Luke missing.

Also When Luke crashes in the Swawp it was meant to cut to R2-D2 complaining on the subtitle readout whilst luke say’s “how you doing back there?” or something like that. More Buddy movie it comes off a bit weird the way it’s cut in the film. That is in the script too.

There is a good few videos on my channel that can help you out a bit… You decide but you can use the audio and copy any edits if you choose to.

The Wampa attack on Echo Base looks like one of those scenes that will be like a black hole…I’d personally save my sanity on that one 😃

Hope that helps.

Long time, no update, but work is always progressing. I’m trying out a fancy new program and trying to isolate some vocals. Here’s Leia tending to Luke, with all audio noise and Kersh being muted.

https://vimeo.com/766038431

And here is what it sounded like before.

https://youtu.be/86-YB1NfgR0?t=811

A bit of an improvment to say the least. Hopefully this process can be used all over the place to clean up the rest of the raw on-set audio.

Most of the cut is picture locked, with myself and RogueLeader doing some audio work on it now.

You think this software could be used for the deleted “sandstorm” sequence from RETURN OF THE JEDI?

So what software are you using? your example so far sounds pretty clean (well improved) to me

It’s not a criticism of the software, I just wanted to know if it could handle that particular scene, as the audio is very poor.

I may try this weekend with Adobe Audition as a break from ESB rotoscoping activities. Usual steps (for best results) are isolate the fans from the voices as best as possible and use that as a “noise print” to cancel out the fan on the version with fans and audio, than audio can be bumped up/raised clarified with EQ etc.

For a final though, will need to add some wind noise to the scene so it still sounds like wind but not fan and so we can control or raise voices when they do speak. Not sure on software Bobson is trying out, but Adobe Audition isn’t too bad for audio work I have tried in the past…just have not tackled the sandstorm yet. Agree the sound is horrible.

Finally some good news!

I’ve rendered out what is probably a close to final cut. I’ve got all the footage I wanted in there, and the sound mixing is alright to my ears.

I’m happy for anyone to watch this and give any feedback before an official release.

New changelist:

  • extended Wampa attack on Luke and his Taun Taun
  • extended conversation with Han and Chewie as he enters Echo Base
  • alternate shot to start of Han/Leia argument, as a Wampa claws through an ice wall
  • added additional dialogue over the previous shot
  • extended argument with Han/Leia, as it keeps going after “You could use a good kiss!”
  • alternate shot of Luke slicing up the Wampa inside the cave
  • extended Bacta Tank scene, with the gang talking as Luke is inside the tube
  • added the infamous Wampa Attack on Echo Base
  • added the Probe Droid blasting apart the Rebel outpost
  • added Leia and Luke having a private moment in the Medical Bay before Han, Chewie and the droids come in, including discussion of what would of happened if he didn’t come back, Luke leaving for Dagobah, Wampas in the base, and Han leaving
  • alternate angles of Luke’s close-ups throughout the whole Medical Bay scene
  • alternate dialogue from Leia “dangerous to leave the system until the energy shield is up” is replaced by “…dangerous to leave the system until we find out where that probe came from” and Luke’s response to that
  • added Han and Leia having a short exchange while he works on the Falcon with Chewie
  • added Hobbie and his very brief skirmish with General Veer’s AT-AT
  • added C-3PO ripping the warning sign off the Wampa pen
  • added Snowtroopers finding the Wampa pen
  • alternate dialogue that replaces Han’s “never tell me the odds!”
  • added Han and Leia working on the Falcon as TIEs bomb the asteroid
  • extended Han and Leia kissing scene aboard the Falcon
  • added Yoda’s test, as Luke trains with his lightsaber
  • added 2 shots of Vader walking onto the bridge of the Star Destroyer with the bounty hunters
  • removed Vader from the background of the “bounty hunters, we don’t need their kind here” to allow for the previous addition of Vader’s shots
  • alternate shots during Lando’s betrayal and Vader’s reveal in Cloud City
  • added shot of Boba Fett in the carbon freezing chamber
  • added Lobot being captured by Stormtroopers, and taken away, as Lando is too late to save him
  • extended scene of Leia tending to Luke in the Falcon as they are pursued by TIE Fighters

My free account with Mega.nz would only allow me to view the first 36 mins of your expanded cut.

I enjoyed what I was viewing a lot.

Some observations:

At the 5:16 mark, there’s a random frame or two that slipped past, during the deleted, extended dialogue between Han and Chewie (“dont lose your temper.”) that needs removal.

At the 23:20 mark, Artoo’s scream (from the Hoth Wampa scene?) carried over Piett’s face and the start of the deleted scene between Luke and Leia (recovering after the bacta tank).

At the 28:04 mark, the deleted scene with Han and Leia could use some work on its geometry - the scene looks vertically stretched (Leia, looks like a conehead).

That’s as far as I got before the “Transfer Quota Exceeded” message popped up to ruin my pleasant viewing experience. Lol. Bummer. Would like to see the rest - if possible?

Same here. Can’t stream or download very far without a paid plan. MEGA should nerver be used because of this. Better of with something else like Google Drive or Dropbox.

If you download it using the MEGA app, it should automatically resume when the wait time runs out. I’ve also had some success messing around with VPN’s to get around the wait.

I’d like a link too, by the way.

The Mega app or jDownloader2 usually works for me, and somehow never really asked me to stop, then again, I never streamed through Mega and always download. jDownloader always has been, and always will be my choice to scoot around it since most of the time it just forgets or something. I ended up shelling out for premium though because they tend to never remove files like GoogleDrive, and I download and store enough stuff from there to justify it.

I have now seen you edit Bobson Dugnutt and I must say I’m impressed how you could manage to keep the old school vibe even though I’m a fan of newer versions of Star Wars movies (Adywan etc).

  • You have successfully managed to make the deleted scenes blend in well with the original movie.
  • I also dig the fill in scenes that manage to bridge some scenes that miss some stuff that were not released to the public.
  • The deleted scene with the Probe droid and Luke’s training on Dagobah were my favorites.
  • The overall sound must be fixed in several places and the sound is out of sync here and there but I’m sure you are aware of this as this is version 1.0 of the movie. 😃
  • Some of the hue of the video is almost green instead of white (don’t know if this is intentional as the original was this way? It was very long time ago I saw the originals). One example is the planet Hoth.
  • I believe you have inserted the deleted TIE Bomber scene too early as the original scene when they first bomb the asteroid field comes much further down the line.
  • The still shot of the Bounty Hunter looked odd. See if it can be solved in any other way? I know that one second is missing in the original clip but this unfortunately didn’t work for me.

Overall I dig you edit Bobson but personally I dig the newer versions more. But it’s a personal taste. 😃
