Well, the electric blue look from 1997 was another one of those let's-remind-the-world-Superman's-still-alive-with-a-big-time-publicity-stunt things. I think the outline was that Superman's classic powers were not functioning properly, he underwent some experiment to correct them and it turned him into electro-Superman. I actually saw a fan art manipulation once of Nicolas Cage as the electric blue Superman, and it was sort of scary.
I'll bet some would say the long hair linked Superman to the biblical strong man Samson (who also had great strength, courtesy of his long hair).
