1997 Special Edition Audio Mixes, GOUT-Synced (Released) — Page 4

I know this is a stupid question, but will these mixes be included with Despecialized v3.0 when they come out?

Makes sense. I ask because I remember reading that the 1997 mix of ROTJ was included with the Destiny Edition, and that now that the 4K trilogy is nearing completion, the focus of Despecialized can shift to being an approximation of what an official restoration of the OOT would look like. I imagine it would almost certainly have at least a few audio tweaks like the “unaltered” (1993) mixes did in 2006, and these mixes sound like kind of the same idea but with different tweaks and in 5.1. But I do understand not wanting to include them as options for something that’s supposed to fill the void left by the lack of an official release.

I mean, it’s all right with me if anyone would like to include these in an appropriate project, but it’d surprise me if Harmy wished to, given the focus of that project.

Member LardBladder pointed something out to me over PM that I wasn’t aware of. In ANH, when the fighters engage their S-foils into attack position, the SE and onward has a sound not present in the older mixes. However, it actually is present in the mono mix! Given this, I have reinstated it and reexported the ANH portion of this project. (I had originally mistook it for a SE change corresponding to the new visuals, but it was there in the mono mix with the original visual FX.)

I also fixed that loud pop when we meet Ben Kenobi.

It’s on the Google Drive, same as ever. (Only ANH is affected.) Thanks as usual to ChainsawAsh for the DTS encode.

So? I honestly don’t remember why he was banned but regardless, there’s no reason Hal can’t credit him for his work.

hello, I would have liked to have advised

I’m trying to create the SE 97 French dubs from the 2004 and 2006 DVDs with the theater version at the level of the changes thank you for the advice I really need for my project to preserve the special edition

If you can rip the audio you want to conform, I would suggest syncing the two starting at the start of the movie. Skim ahead until the audio falls out of sync, and adjust. Hopefully the the two remain mostly in sync on their own except when a change occurs, but there will be small points here and there where a frame needs to be removed and glossed over or contrived.

I had almost succeeded for the return of the jedi but I felt a diference in the audio
for a new hope the audio already exists

but for the empire strikes back and the return of the jedi I heard that it was impossible for the french tracks … there are very big differences

I keep hoping to find one day French dubbing 97 SE taste to synchronize

But I think it will be difficult
but i will try on my side

First, thanks for doing this.

I wanted to use this audio with D+77 but this project is not GOUT sync anymore, it has 1 additional frame. Will it be very noticeable do you think ?

IMHO that difference is not remotely noticeable. I even tried to sync it, and the difference compared to the (admittedly less than 100% precise) GOUT version was half a frame. And it’s only the last 15% of the movie. It’s 100% fine, to me.

I muxed the two together, worked like a charm. I did not feel any audio desync. Thanks again.

Muxed these together with the “D+” series releases from OhTeeDee and I think that will be my favorite way to watch these films going forward (or your custom special editions whenever I feel like a little cgi in my Star Wars). Great work!

Speaking of D+, I’m not seeing a DTS encode for the D+80 synced ESB Mix on the GDrive folder. There should be one, according to the readme, right?

Out of curiosity for a potential Ep 1 project, how did you downmix to stereo?

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Hello there,

I found the Google drive link on Reddit but the folder is now invalid. Is there anywhere to grab these 97 audio mixes? Asking here rather than pm since I’m sure other inquiring minds (and ears) want to know. If this is not a good place please pm. Thanks

I wonder if you found the old Google Drive link. I’ll PM you the new one.

Edit: to be clear, I mean new as in a few years old now. There is no new link that fixes the recent issue or anything.

Ok I watched D+77 with this mix, flipping back to all the other mixes now and again to compare, and this really takes the cake. I imagine with the reconstruction of the movie in the mid 90s, as many best-generation audio sources were resynced for the new mix. The music particularly sounds much much better. Everything has much more separation and really does bring me back to the theater of 1997 yet amazing to hear with the original cut of the film like it should have been all along. Some of it’s kind of weird like in the cantina the alien voices are quite prominent, and when the Falcon comes out of hyperspace at Alderaan the debris field makes those horrible synth swishes which, correct me if I’m wrong, only started with the 1993 mix from what I can tell. I wish they weren’t there.

Overall it’s much more dynamic, with a lot of aural separation between the various sounds that wasn’t there before. The balance is much more modern sounding though so maybe not for purists but yes for when you show to your kids or family so they’re not put off by “old timey” sound. I swear it all sounded like the same edits to me, with all the same sonic character, but everything is much clearer. (Maybe a touch too much low end.) If there is the one frame sync problem at the tail end of the movie I really couldn’t tell.

Kudos Hal.
