I see a version of your edit and both vader and kenobi fights seems as dark as it is in the show. You changed the light in these scenes?

Honestly, not by much. You brighten it too much and you start getting a lot of noise in the image.

Ah, understand. Thanks for answering.

For sure! More specifically I did slightly brighten pretty much everything. And also boosted all the midtones. It’s a subtle difference but it does help a little.

SpenceEdit,

I watched your edit yesterday and it’s really amazing. You managed to highlight all the great ideas and stuff of this series and make it into a really fun movie. At no point, I felt like I was watching a fan edit and I don’t think I would have noticed any of the missing scenes if I didn’t know they exist.

I do still have some feedback on a few scenes/cuts or transitions that felt a little jarring.

The first would be Leias kidnapping. I like what you did there but the fade to black with the musical sting (is that what it’s called?) felt somewhat off. Maybe it was just a black screen for too long or maybe the music was a little too much, I don’t know.

Then there is the cut rooftop chase from the second episode. I didn’t actually miss that scene at all but it being cut caused two problems for me: First of all, the appearance of the bounty hunter droid came too sudden and out of the blue for me even with the scene earlier of all bounty hunters being alerted. Maybe it’s the same in the original cut, but this appearance felt a little disjointed. The second problem I had with the cut rooftop sequence is that it included the scene where Obi-Wan struggles with the force when he saves Leia from falling. Without that scene we are only told that Obi-Wan is not who he was (with the exception of that one shot on the transport after leaving the city planet) which makes it less impactful when he gets his powers back since we never really saw that he lost them in the first place.

And related to that scene: After Obi-Wan and Haja part ways, you cut to Reva suddenly and aggressively jumping down from the roof to confront Haja. That felt quite jarring as well and would IMO work better if she just comes around the corner and stops Haja.

A few minor things: I didn’t quite get Talas motivation or why she suddenly made the decision to help Obi-Wan when she’s with Leia in the tunnel. It went from Leia asking her to do that and her not wanting to go to her just leaving the next time we see her. I can’t remember if that’s any different from the original cut but I noticed it here.
Seeing Lolas red light was the only time I noticed the original episode structure since that shot still had the cliffhanger feel of the original. Not sure how much can be done about that though.
The scene of Vaders shuttle landing for the final duel seemed to stutter for me for some reason.

And finally, the last scene with Owen. Without Reva abducting Luke and Obi-Wan helping to get him back (which I didn’t mind to lose in this cut even though it has some great Owen and Beru scenes), there was no motivation at all for Owen to suddenly change his mind and agree to have Obi-Wan closer to Luke.
When watching the movie, I thought it could have simply ended with Obi-Wan boarding the shuttle on Alderaan but I get why showing him as Lukes protector again is important and the same goes for him meeting Qui-Gon in the end. Still, Owens change of heart didn’t work for me in the context of the movie.

I also remember having thoughts about the conversation with the guy from Jabiim where Obi-Wan and Tala convince him to help but I’ll need to rewatch that scene.

But as I said earlier: Really great work!

I finally got a chance to check this out and I’m glad I did. This is an excellent edit and now my preferred way to experience this story. The only thing I would add is I feel like the opening could use music. But I know that’s a stylistic choice and I respect it. Only real issue I had was that there was a lot of digital artifacting in dark scenes. Ben’s nightmare sequence toward the start of the film was probably the worst offender. I watched this on an OLED so I don’t know if that caused it to be more pronounced but it was quite distracting. But otherwise the picture was solid in bright scenes.

Outside of that this is an excellent truncation of the series. You can definitely tell it was originally written to be this length before being stretched out. Excising the bloat has done wonders.

Anyway, fantastic job! This is now my go to version from now on!

Thanks! Yeah, by nature of there not being an official source material, I did the best I could. I also brightened everything slightly. Might be more noise, but being able to actually see what’s happening kind of makes the trade off worth it.

Do you have any subtitles for this movie? Could be in english. It would help alot.

OT member Phase3 had a wonderful suggestion for altering the final duel in the Kenobi series so that we don’t end on Obi-Wan’s baffling choice to let Vader live. The basic idea is to move the burying obi-wan in rocks to the very end of the duel so that after Kenobi walks away from Vader with a sliced helmet, he screams out “Obi-Wan” then cracks the ground with the force, proceeding to bury Obi-Wan, walk away from the fight the victor. Then Obi-Wan climbs out and the fight is over.

If we can make this work, I think it would make the duel even more amazing than it already is (I quite enjoyed the fight outside of the nonsensical ending where Obi-Wan lets Vader live).

I created a mock-up of this idea. The changes so far:

-Reversing the flow of Kenobi retreating so it links smoothly to the later part of the duel.
-Flip shot of ground breaking for visual continuity.
-Removed Vader’s line “And that is why you will always lose” as he breaks the ground, rough sfx replaced (can be polished later)
-Cropped out vader of wide shot of ground breaking for visual continuity.
-Removed vader’s line “Did you really think you could defeat me?” after he buries him.
-Rearranged shots of Vader walking away for better flow

The one key change remaining to tie this whole idea together is somehow changing the final shots of the rock burying so that Vader’s helmet is still sliced in half. I don’t know who would have the special effects skills to do this but perhaps a community effort would achieve this.

It’s a neat idea, but not something I’d be interested in implementing for this edit.

I ended up with some unexpected free time, but not free energy, so I thought I’d plop down and watch this all the way through.

Spence, you did a really good job with this. You included and excluded exactly the right stuff. The pacing was sublime, and I believe this is unqualified preferable to watching Kenobi as a series. Maybe LFL would’ve included several deleted scenes as bonus material or even released a 4-hour super extended cut. But this version really plays.

I’m about halfway through syncing English subtitles to this. There’ll be .srt subtitles as well as PGS subtitles formatted to match ANH’s burned in subtitles (but a little smaller).

If anyone wants to adjust other language tracks to match once I’m done, shouldn’t be too hard. Much more easily done if you know the language.

Really enjoyed this. The only thing I missed was the Vader/Emperor scene at the end.

Very late to the party but I finally had a moment to check this out and, well, it’s pretty great.

For me the series was always fine but short of what it should have been. Having it presented in a cohesive, feature format instead really works for me.

I think you’ve got sharp instincts. In fact, the highest praise I can give it is that I was able to turn off the ‘fan-editor’ part of my brain and really just enjoy it. Excellent work.

Cheers!

I’d really appreciate a link for this, especially since it seems to address most of my issues I had with the series. Thanks in advance!
