I certainly appreciate you tackling this shot. It needed a bit more love years ago.
I’d say you’re pretty close! There’s still some halo-ing around the characters (I’m seeing specifically their heads). And the background seems maybe still too in-focus? I think it’s 3PO that’s throwing me off. Isn’t he kind of out of focus in this shot? I’m trying to remember now…

Yeah threeio really looks weird in this shot, really blurry really dark.

Does anyone own a threepio costume and a camera?

eh…I’m not sure. There’s not enough feathering I think. it looks too sharp. Again, it’s more noticeable on 3PO because he’s more out of focus.

If I add more feathering the halo would appear again.

If I may say something about this shot.

The background looks good… The theatrical version was red and was not tinted blue to make it purple.

The Special edition was Blue without enough red to make it Purple.

It should be purple but some reason it’s either Blue or red.

I would go with theatrical version and add blue tint possibly more shadow detail. Certainly despezialized has detail on 3P0’s black chest which I’ll assume was upscaled GOUT sourced.

any chance of adding the red lights to the moisture vaporator?

I like the addition of the missing targeting computer on Gold Leader pulling out the trench but It looks a little low in the frame.

Keep up the good work.

That video gave me an idea, I’ll retry the shot using the 4K Blu-ray source. it will probably have more detail and be easier on the eyes.

Yeah well I just realized something about the binary sunset shots…

Note in the Purple version there is a white sun

In the red version there is a more yellow / red sun.

Yes there are 2 versions but what I think was meant to be the process was that on the white sun in the purple theatrical version the Red version is Luma Keyed in for the white space and then red sun with a feathered edge bleeding through the purple.

To be honest the more Red with a blend / feather the better. The process was never done. It is a half way done shot.

I would treat the theatrical version as sort of correct without this extra step applied. AS in it’s missing the final composite of the Red sun.

The moisture vaporator on the right being black is the same sort of issue it’s not composited into the shot but the hole for it is there.

Can’t see any difference to be honest.

There is more detail still in the youtube clip I posted. Using that would be an improvement as the source for the shot.

I think that youtube clip is from Neveragreats technicolor recreation, if i’m not mistaken.

The other option is to line up the two shots and Lumakey the detail in through the black, but even then it still looks way dark too little contrast and crushed blacks.

I think it looks swell.

I don’t know, it doesn’t look quite right and you can kind of tell that its the binary sunset background.

Also, the new background contradicts the position of Threepio and Luke, as the camera in the original version shows that they were facing to the right of where the binary sunsets were earlier.

I suggest you keep the original version of the shot.

Wow! I’ve been going through all of your pages on this thread checking out the progression, and I’m honestly in shock and awe! This project of yours is going to be amazing. I can’t wait for the release or even more updates.

If you think this edit’s cool you should check Adywan’s edit. it’s the same as this but 100% better, it’s the inspiration for this copycat edit.

Wow this is a movie for the late 70s? it amazes me that we can improve these movies to look newer than their age.
