Harry Potter Extended Editions (Released) — Page 24

I’ve had several people ask whether I’m going to do a version of Secrets of Dumbledore or not. I would think it would be pretty obvious that I’m at least going to consider it. I haven’t answered in the affirmative because without seeing what is on the discs and the quality of the deleted scenes, it is hard to tell how difficult it may be, how much extra work may go into the edit, and whether the scenes will add anything to the final film.

I will be getting my 4k/blu-ray set tomorrow when it is released. I will have a better idea after I have time to spend looking at the content.

For those that continue to post in the public forum asking for my current edits, I wish you would take the time to read some of the past posts, especially the very first post in this thread. You would save yourself a lot of time waiting.

For info on my HP edits, read the first post in the thread on OT.

I have started work on an extended edition of Secrets of Dumbledore. From what I can tell, editing the deleted scenes back in should not be too painful. I can’t give a timetable for completion, but it is in progress.

Just finished marathoning the entire film series with your edits. Absolutely loved them, and absolutely fantastic work. Thank you so much for putting the time in to do this. Quality is much better than 2.0, sound is pretty decent as well from what I can tell. I am still curious what the size/quality would be for the raw file.

Also, would you ever be interested in doing a new version of these, with open matte versions of all the theatrical scenes? I have those available if interested.
I will close by saying… Deathly Hallows Part 1 Extended is insanely good.
Thanks again 😄

Thank you for the awesome edits and hard work,
can’t wait for the new one to be out.

So I got distracted and completely missed that v2.1 was released and grabbed them today. (Thanks, JJP).

…I hate being the one to mention this, but just checking PoA and I noticed that all three audio tracks are echo-y compared to v1.5.
Some scenes (like inside the Dursleys’ house) sound like they are in a public bathroom or something. I did a quick check on the other films, but it only seems to be an issue with ‘Prisoner’.
Anyone else notice this?

I just went back and listened on my version and I’m hearing it both in the final edit and the raw audio files. I went back and listened to the original movie audio and I am hearing the same thing there. Can you confirm on your playback?

I just checked my disc, and you’re right. The original mix sounds just like that.
I’m surprised I never noticed that the audio mix is that poor and that it has never been fixed.

Sorry. I should have checked before posting.

Hello dear JJpotter
i was so excided when i first heard that you’ve finally upgraded the video quality of harry potter edits, specially when you said something about using today’s technology in able to get better results, thinking that you are talking about hevc encoding using 10 bit at slow settings, but it was a bit disappointing for me that it was only 8 bit and not 10 bit,
i have “3xo” encodes which are about 7GB per movie and they still looks slightly better than your recent V2.1 encodes which are about 9 GB per movie, i know that encoding at 10 bit is more time consuming and more heavy on hardware but it is the best thar technology can offer today, it gives better results
please don’t be offended with my opinion, i thank you so much for your precious time and great efforts, and if you will ever do newer version in the near or far future, please keep the bitrate at 10.000 kbs on h265 10 bits and mkv not mp4, yes the file size would be +10GB per movie but it is so worth it, it is our favorite movie series after all, good luck.

It is hard not to take comments like this personally when it is literally the very first post after issuing a new release. I’ve tried to walk a fine line between those who complain that my edits are too big and won’t run on their hardware and those who complain that my edits aren’t high-quality enough. I’m in a no-win situation. I either provide a high-quality release that some people will gripe about not being able to run or I release a lower-quality release that is just not good enough for some.

While part of me hopes that the last 2 movies in this series get made, another part of me hopes this is the end and I don’t have to release any further versions. The fun was taken out a couple of years ago when my draft clips were taken from my site and were used to create versions not made by me but with my name all over them. I pulled my edits at that time, ready to walk away from the community. I came back after a few months and provided them again. Since that point, it has been a constant set of complaints. It is not fun releasing anymore for this reason.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there isn’t a way for me to not take it personally when that is the primary type of message I get. No one is satisfied. No one is thankful. No one will just enjoy what has been provided to them. I’m not charging for these. They are freely available. If it isn’t good enough quality, delete them or don’t download them to start with.

Short of another FB movie coming out, this will be my final release. Even then, I am not sure I will publicly release anything I create for myself going forward. I’m tired of trying to please everyone and ending up pleasing no one.

The issue is usually that people who are satisfied by your fanedits (or any edits in general) don’t tell you or post any comments about it.
But trust me there are farrrrr more people happy, pleased and grateful for your fanedits that there are of people complaining about it.

It’s the same in real life with customer service or any work that involve dealing with customers.
It’s very rare for an employee to receive compliments for their work/service, but they will easily receive complaints from customers. So for 1 000 happy customers, they will receive maybe 3 negative comments.

So unfortunately if you try to evaluate how much your fanedits are appreciated by people based on the number of comments your receive, it will give the wrong idea and make you see only negative/complaining comments.
Maybe make it a bit more visible in your email/description that you would appreciate a comment or message/email about your fanedits or even remind people to post a review on Fanedit .info.

I personally loveeee your fanedits, you did such an incredible work on them and we can feel the passion behind this project of yours.
Your fanedits are my go-to when I want to watch HP and FB movies, I even talk about them to every new HP fans I meet.

Yeah I don’t usually give feedback (positive or negative) unless it’s specifically requested. But I loved the v1 of your HP edits and was thrilled when you released the recent upgrades!

Fanediting is a hobby and no one should feel obligated to share their work or meet others’ demands. And if someone’s dissatisfied with what a faneditor has generously chosen to share, they can do what myself and I imagine many other faneditors have done and make their own edit that meets their criteria. It’s actually a great way to get started already having a good reference to use. I even considered remaking your edits for my own library so I could have higher quality versions but with the upgraded v2.1 now I probably won’t.

I definitely look forward to any future releases that you may share (FB, HP or otherwise) and thank you for the gifts you have already given. Above all, I hope you find joy in your hobbies and don’t get discouraged by others.

I dunno. Sure you get all kinds of jerks when you do edits (I left Fanedit forums years ago for that reason), but re-reading user2000’s post, I’m more inclined to believe that what was said wasn’t intended to be mean.
OT forums isn’t just a place for fans. You have a lot of people that like to discuss editing and preservation in the best ways possible. So nitpicking, while normally is insulting, in cases like this it seems more like: ‘hey, did you know that…’.
There are things mentioned about x265 and 10-bit encoding I didn’t know. I learned something that I’ll use in the future.
And of COURSE everyone has an opinion about file size. You have picky people who probably want you to do UHD disc versions and you have people that want to be able to download it and watch it on their 5-year old cellphones.
Heck, ADigitalMan released DVD5 and DVD9 editions of his edits for that very reason… which, even though standard definition, I would still be watching if yours didn’t exist.

Sir i’m so sorry that you took my comment personally
i totally understand your point of view
but you are so wrong when putting me as one of ungrateful users
i’am so thankful to you and a big fan of your work
my comment was only meant to be as a feedback,
i was just thinking if anyone wants to do a good encode that worth his time…
why go for 8 bit, no body uses 8 bit anymore, 10 bit preserve more colors and provide much better results
in my first comment i said that i had compared your version with a smaller 10 bit encode that i have
the 10 bit encode looked way better than your old version, and still looks slightly better than the recent V2.1
i wasen’t being a jerk and i’m definitely not a hater, i just believe that a 10GB 10 bit encode would of been perfect
i really was not suggesting that you must do a new version, because it is not worth the time since you’ve just did V2.1
but to at least consider trying better settings if you were ever to do a new one in the far future
and i’m not gonna be deleting your V2.1 version because still it is the best H.P. fanedit out there
as said i get your point of veiw, yes people can’t be satisfied and i’m so sory that you took my feedback personal
you are a hard working man, a good person, and a great artist, thank you so much.

Did I say the post was being mean? NO! But, Doctor M, you proved my point at the end of your post. There are picky people and this post was one of them. I’m tired of people saying they are disappointed in my work solely because I didn’t give them what they wanted. I just released a new edit and the first thing that is said is that my work is disappointing because I didn’t provide 10-bit vs 8-bit encoding. All the while, someone out there is disappointed that I used x265 encoding because their 10-year-old rig won’t play it properly.

For info on my HP edits, read the first post in the thread on OT.

Mate, we all here appreciate your work, and the huge effort that you have put behind it. I don’t think there’s anyone that has seen your work that doesn’t have it as their go to. Is just that some have really great home cinemas or great HDR 4k TVs and would love to have the best experience possible, and some don’t even own a proper TV or even watch your edits on tablets or smartphones, and for them, size matters more than quality. That’s about it.

Most editors here always release several versions of their edit in different sizes and qualities. Some top notch, the best that can be, some 1080p, 720p and a crappy one that is easy to download and store. Even some still do make a DVD version divided in 5 so you can burn it and watch it on a DVD player.

Here’s the problem…

Apparently far too many people expect JJPotter to be a short order cook and tailor every release to their own specifications. This is a ridiculous notion. Everyone should appreciate the magnificent effort that he has put into this and realize that they are getting for free and not complain or “make suggestions”. It is his work and he has the right to present it as he sees fit. Being that he is obviously an accomplished editor, my hunch is he already knows about various means to “make them better” (8 bit vs 10 bit, increase data rate, etc…). If you want it better, do it yourself. On the other hand, those that want “smaller versions” (lower bit rate, h264 vs h265, 720p, etc…) have even LESS to complain about because they can make those changes themselves once they download them and use handbrake or any numerous re-encoding programs.

Don’t complain about file size and your Internet. Either buy better Internet (if available), go to where Internet is better (Starbucks, work, etc…), or just suck it up. Like I said, you’re getting this for free and the effort behind it is monumental, so you should be showing your appreciation instead.

He has every right to present these as he sees fit, without everyone jumping down his throat complaining about everything under the sun regarding the tech specs of it. As it stand now, it seems that those that have been complaining have run off a very valuable member of this community, and it sickens me that you have done so. I do hope that he reconsiders any future projects and perhaps changes the method in which he is willing to dole out any updates or future releases so that he isn’t attacked with complaints.

What he should do is post that a new edition is available, lock the thread so that no responses can be made, and the only email address is the one that he uses to dole out the current releases and have gmail delete all incoming mail. Then find someone willing (I would gladly volunteer) to have threads dealing with technical glitches that are found. That way he doesn’t have to deal with the stress of dealing with everyone complaining that his releases aren’t what they want. I have used his works to learn and help to improve my own fanedits. I really hate that his current position is that he’s removed himself from a community that is supposed to be supportive and appreciative of his work and not ride him like a broken horse during the Pony Express.

See DH Part 1 and 2 for changes for v2.1. For combined film:

• Moved scene of Snape looking over Hogwarts to earlier in the DH1 portion of the film. This establishes him as the new headmaster. It also goes along with the various other scenes around it (Death Eaters looking for Harry, a Ministry official searching the Grainger’s home).
• Moved where Voldemort gets the Elder Wand to between when the three are captured in the woods and when they are delivered to Malfoy Manor. The time of day/skylines seems to match better than leaving it after Dobby dies. It also allows for a straight story between Malfoy Manor, the death and burial of Dobby, and the scenes at Shell Cottage. This edit has been the most controversial of the ones I made. Some of the test viewers did not like Voldemort finding the wand so much earlier. I felt it was necessary to make the story less disjointed.
• Blending of the scenes where Dobby dies, is buried, and the story transitions to Shell Cottage. I felt this was the best way to complete the blending of movies 1 and 2 together.

Fanedit Name: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Extended Edition v2.1
Fanedit Runtime: 2:20:43

v2.1 Change List:

• Warning screen added to the beginning of the film.

• Adjusted coloring on the scene as Newt/Jacob go to see the snakes.
• Adjusted audio in the added scene of Credence tearing up the city and Newt showing up at the police barricade.

v1.5 Change List:

• Added scene where Tina takes Newt to the MACUSA president and is turned away.

I’ve had a skip through it and it seems to be fine.

Related I wanted to say I’ve been watching these over the last couple of days back to back and I have to say there’s only occasional moments where I can see seams even knowing where you edited these together. They’re nearly flawless and I can’t imagine the films unextended.

Also, on your back and forth about quality and size, it took me almost a week to download these with my terrible internet, so I just set them to download in the background and picked them up as a surprise at the weekend, whatever quality or size you’ve settled on was worth it, colours are good, there’s no artefacts, blacks stand out properly and the smoothness is good, I had no issues with having to wait for them.
