4K80 is now completed.

Well, not quite: it’s still just a beta version for now.

But still, fantastic news! In just a few weeks, we’ll have professional-quality 4K restorations of the entire theatrical OT, entirely because of the hard work of a few fans. That’s amazing to think about.

Bet they’re working on a release trailer right now. Excellent.

If this is just a beta version, then how long till the actual restoration is complete?

Probably either very soon or a while. It all depends on if they decide to keep poita’s reel 1 or not.

I think I missed it… the forum over on 4k80 says I need an invitation code? Could a kindly person help a brother out? LOL. I don’t remember this from back when I was following the other 4k projects back in the day. Of course its been years since I thought to check in on this. Thanks!

You shouldn’t need a invite/account to just view the main website. You do need it to get on the forum. See the first post of this thread for that.

when exactly is the release date?

When it’s done

But how much is left to do?

I saw on the 4K80 site that cleanup was done

Further info is probably on the form

I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

I just want to thank you, and everyone involved with these projects. I have only a vague idea of how much effort, work, and most of all patience that is required to get the excellent results you’ve shared.
I am grateful.
Thank you unreservedly for sharing your efforts with us.

Has anyone got anything resembling an update about what’s going on with the project, the site hasn’t been updated since February. I hope nothing’s wrong.

Multiple betas and hard work.

I loved the other 35mm restorations, so I can’t wait for this. It’s sad that a multi-billion dollar corporation can’t be bothered to do this themselves, but I suppose if they gave us a flawless, restored release they couldn’t sell us on future ones down the line. Gotta get that 4K disc!, then that 8K disc!, then that 8K 3D disc, each with it’s own head-scratching changes. Just good enough to make us happy, but just bad enough to keep us hooked on the next version.

I’ll never say never, but it’s highly unlikely that there will be another physical disc format after 4k UHD.

Speaking of which, Wall-E is getting a Criterion 4k release in November, the first time in years they’ve put out a Disney movie. Like I said, never say never.

I can’t picture Disney licensing out the home video rights of their huge franchise to another home video distributor.

I could see it happening, but only for the original trilogy.

Fact: Disney has a massive star wars archive that could result in newer and spectacular extras for a set.
Fact: Disney (hopefully) understands that a next physical release has to really stand out from the previous LAZY/Little to no effort releases from 2019, most of which they did not do any work on, but rather another company.
Fact: Criterion has the staffing, manpower, and motivation to do outstanding work.

Theory/Question: I could see Disney doing this solely on the basis that they don’t have the time or inclination to play around with or dig through the massive amounts of film, video, audio snippets, photo prints etc. that are laying around in the “archives”. Someone in Disney must surely be weighing out that a substandard release would cost them more in the long run as opposed to licensing the trilogy out to a company that would make such an awesome release that it would sell enough copies to make a quick buck for the Big D.

The 2019 sets sold decently, but probably not as well as they projected, which is why they also optioned it for their streaming service.

Putting out another set of the OT would have to be done wisely. The market is saturated with this product already, so it would make sense to do something extraordinary for the next release.

Also…I am sure they are very aware of the 4k projects here. At some point they need to reach out to this niche market. It literally is the bottom of the pot for Disney, so I could see them licensing the work out to criterion, and selling a limited amount of sets before taking criterion’s work and selling them later down the line for themselves.

whew! ok that is all I got. Sorry for the long-windiness.

There is also the George Lucas of it all. We don’t know for sure about this, but it is safe to assume he wrote in the contract to potentially never release the original versions. I really love this wishful thinking, but I fear for the worst with this.

You’re probably right, and Wall-E is a standalone film which is why it would make more sense for Disney to license that out to them just as they did with Armageddon back in the dvd days.

Disney might just go all out on Star Wars by themselves years from now when they’ve decided there’s no way to wring any more sales out of the 2020 release. Even for the films made under their ownership there’s plenty of unseen stuff to include if they really wanted to, like Lord and Miller’s material for Solo that didn’t make it into the Ron Howard version or the rough cut of Rogue One. There’s even stuff from the ST itself that we know got filmed but never saw the light of day, like all the deleted scenes for TRoS.

TLJ is probably the only one where I can’t think of anything they didn’t already include on the already available bonus materials that would be of any interest, although I suppose alternate cuts of VII, VIII and IX, basically an ST-SE, would at least make things consistent across all nine films if they were to restore and include the OOT and OPT alongside George’s preferred cuts of I-VI.

While that would be wonderful, I don’t share your optimism on the subject. Disney runs Lucasfilm very much like Lucas ran Lucasfilm. It’s a brand and a narrative first. Those alternate takes don’t matter because they didn’t make it, especially if they change the story in a significant fashion. I’m honestly surprised we ever got the deleted scenes from the OT.

George at least put out the GOUT to shut down bootleggers pushing laserdisc rips.

We’re only just this year getting to the point where the entire OOT has been made available from modern scans of actual 35mm release prints.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the first laserdisc rips of the OOT started showing up around 2003. Three years later, George put out the GOUT.

Disney themselves just made the Light and Magic ILM documentary which includes lots of OOT footage. For me it’s not that far of a stretch to think they’d be open to restoring/remastering those versions, if only because it would be yet another re-release for them to profit off of.

The Beta 3 version is very good. I was skeptical it could be as good as 4K77 and 4K83. I was blown away. I’m sure a finished version will be even better.

You might be interested in this then - Beta 5 dropped on May 4th on the TN1 forum, and it’s leagues better than 3.
