So, the track will likely end up being LPCM 2.0, or something like that?

Yes. Even if the audio turned out to be Dolby Surround encoded it would still be
captured as LPCM 2.0. The decoding to surround occurs during playback by the users’ receiver.
The digital audio on laserdisc is always 16 Bit 44.1 kHz LPCM. The analog audio can be
captured any way want. I will capture it at 24 Bit 96 kHz.
Now I’m just hoping that the laserdisc has the original theatrical soundtrack.

How will you know if it’s the original theatrical soundtrack, or not?

I’d like to say that as soon as I listen to it I will recognize it as the original soundtrack.
I would be lying though. I’m hoping that someone else will be able to identify it.
How many English soundtracks could there be? If it sounds different than the DVD then
it should be the original I would guess.

The VHS and LaserDisc use the same Dolby Stereo mix. The VHS has a theatrically accurate mix so I assume the LD would be the same

Anything yet?

Should be ready before the end of the week. Like I said the download speeds for this are VERY slow so it takes time. Reel 4 is close to being done. Download speeds on their end are only 500 kb/s and the download has been ongoing since July 18th. It will be ready when it’s ready. In the mean time here is a color corrected frame from the raw scan to give a little preview of the colors:

He’s been busy. He (imo) offered a better alternative which is to just send cels scans and color charts which will help with getting some accurate color correction.

Jerry told me this:

“I’m not too busy to do all Zoom meetings - just the ones that don’t fit my schedule. I do hope to find a good time that works for him and for me.”

Something else: How will you know which colors are the correct ones?

I was told animation cels should be a good guideline for color correction. In the mean time before the Zoom meeting (and keep in mind idk when that will be) I will go off any high quality cel scans I can find (Heritage Auction scans being the best sources I’ve seen so far for cel scans of the first film)

If it’s any help I recently found and purchased this pack of cels https://www.etsy.com/listing/1056720452/15x-genuine-35mm-clips-the-brave-little and currently there’s another pack available

I would advise against purchasing cut up film strips

What’s the plan for this when it’s finished? Is this going to be shared publicly or is this for donors only?

I plan to share it publicly. Hopefully as a YouTube upload with Kineko Video and 100% on Archive.org . As of now I’m only keeping proxies and raw scans private to donors because I wouldn’t want to release an unfinished project publicly. But once a finished restoration comes about I will release both the raw scan and restoration for archival. I wouldn’t want any of this projects work becoming lost and I want as many people possible to see it (and maybe even encourage Disney to release their own).

PS: I will also look into possibility of having the scans stored on a LTO Tape. I know someone who owns a LTO set up and 100% want this archived on something reliable and not just hard drives

The Archive.org version will be fully uncompressed, right?

Maybe someone will correct me because I’ve missed or not considered something, but I’d suspect a fully uncompressed file of this, even only the video — high bit depth to keep the color and all — would be over a TB. Even using Lagarith lossless results in a HD feature file being over 200GB, and fully uncompressed (at least what I’ve seen in my playing around) results in MUCH bigger file sizes than using Lag.

So, I’d assume Venny wouldn’t be trying to upload things in the 200GB-2TB range onto Archive.org … but if anyone throws info at me to correct me on any of that above I’m all ears in my mere hobbyist-ness. 😃

LightWave = fun times with gfx for me 😃
