Wow, that's nifty!

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

"Lucasbolt?"

Do I dare ask? ;-)

Yeah... it's probably a flannel cock ring.

Yeah, I went there.

So... was no one else around for the Gonk Wars on R.A.S.S.M. in the 95-97 timeframe?  Bingowings, you seemed like you might have been in on the joke?

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

I mentioned this in my first post on the ROTJ Wishlist Thread.

George made three films where two droids were meant to be characters we cared about and two where the torture of humans was suitably horrific (within the set audience parameters naturally) and in ROTJ he dropped in a comedy droid torture scene.

COMEDY droid torture scene? How was it comedy?

Hate to say it, but I was never bothered by tortured droids (they're just metal after all)

I don't think anyone was bother by the droids being tortured in a "holy hell! how can they show this kind of thing to little kids! This is awful!"

but in more of a, "Whoa, they are torturing droids. this is seriously lame..." kind of way.

I don't see how it was lame. We had R2 D2 and C3PO treated as people with feelings from the beginning. People with feelings can be tortured and you can care when it happens. The scene worked quite well and added to the intensity of the film. I certainly don't see it as comical or lame.

Are Star Wars droids sentient? The Gotra was mentioned in the first episode of The Mandalorian season 2.

the burning feet could be explained as maintenance, replacing the traction soles, but the rest of the scene had to have been a joke.

I don’t know how or why droids feel pain and emotion in the SW Universe; but speaking from a perspective of filmmaking, I am glad that they do.  The characters of the droids are much richer because of it.  However, it has to be handled realisticly.

Like to add to this and say that Droid pain is something I prefer Star Wars never explains. I like having it be one of those things that fans can ponder about since within the story it doesn’t need any more explanation other than “C-3PO, just like any human character, can and will be tortured if he upsets his new master.”

As for the shifts in tone within the film, I don’t think its that big a deal. The whole first act of Jedi is a bit bumpy in its execution, but I never found the tone to be an issue, at least not for me that is.

I agree. Droids in Star Wars should have an element of life which isn’t clearly reducible to their mere components.

The prequel and sequel trilogies went too far in reducing droids (Threepio in particular) to mere machines, in my opinion. At the end of the PT, Threepio has his memories erased, presumably destroying the person he became over the course of the prequels. However, since we see his construction in TPM we know that his personality was present from the beginning, so erasing those memories means almost nothing in practice. Further, in the ST we see Threepio factory reset (again having no change on his personality) and then his memories are able to be restored anyway.

I always felt like the original Star Wars film portrayed 'droids as a persecuted underclass that was viewed by most people in the universe as simple machines prone to glitches and erratic behavior. A droid with personality was defective and these troublesome errors would be prevented by restraining bolts and fixed by routine memory wipes, much like you would wipe a used computer’s hard drive before using it yourself. Viewed in this way, a droid becomes more erratic, more of a person, over time, and a memory wipe destroys the personality and the person. Some people in the galaxy, such as some in the Rebel Alliance, seem to have a soft spot for droids as people, but for the rest of the galaxy they are nothing more than machines. This gives the original films a whole new dimension of thematic power, and is another reason that for me the PT and ST trilogies don’t exist in the same universe as the OT.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m going to get off topic here but I want to say that I think this point reminds me of something I’ve always felt about Star Wars. The OT really is its own little universe, the way the story is told, the tone, the characters, etc. It feels like its own realm which no other Star Wars film or EU material has ever been able to match for me. Within the trilogy themselves even, the movies are so distinct and unique in their own right and I think this adds to the feeling for me. They are all different but unified. The thematic elements of the OT mixed with their visuals and characters is something else.

I totally agree. The OT really does feel like it’s on an island of its own relative to the rest of Star Wars. That’s part of what makes it special. The one thing I can think of that comes closest to the OT in tone and style is the Thrawn trilogy.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.
