Beavis and Butt-Head S03E35 - Incognito (Reconstruction/Restoration)

Hey - been a while since I’ve posted here. Hope you all are well…

This is a logo-less restoration of Incognito, with intro, commercial bumper, and remade music videos and end credits.

Quite a few BNB episodes have not been released on DVD. Incognito is one of five episodes that has not even had a VHS release. And, unfortunately, the available sources we have for this one are quite poor. The digital recordings we have are incomplete or (as is the case for VH1 Europe) covered in large logos.

While Paramount+ will be showing ‘remastered’ episodes this summer, it’s not clear what that means yet. Getting all of the music videos and censored scenes would be great, but it seems unlikely. And a few episodes, including Incognito, are still likely to be left off entirely (fingers crossed, though).

This project is a test for removing network logos using multiple sources, with the intention that this method can used to restore whatever gets left off of Paramount+. I’ve used Dr. Dre’s excellent color matching tool to mask the logos.

Thanks also to the people who have kept amazing archives, going way back to creating the KT collection, and the recordings that have come about since. See the main sources used here:

The European VH1 DVR is the best source available. Unfortunately, it does have frame blending from the PAL conversion, so this is never going to be perfect. A VHS recording from MTV UK has the same blending (likely in the PAL master), and has been used to remove the large VH1 logo. To remove the top BNB watermark, a lower quality MTV US VHS needed to be used. Dre’s color matching tool was used better match to the VH1 version. Music videos were rebuilt from better quality videos, and the BNB logo and text were redone. The end credits were rebuilt using the correct background sequence to improve their quality.

Available on the spleen and whatnot.

I do know for a fact the episodes won’t be in their original form

A lot of the early episodes after the fire controversy had their original masters altered to remove fire references

It’s also possible Judge himself won’t allow certain moments to be seen again or entire episodes

Yeah. We can only speculate on exactly how things exist in the archive, what has usable copies, etc. Comedians has been broadcast uncensored in later years on VH1, so who knows.

As for Mike, you’re right that he is perhaps the biggest critic of the early years, before the characters were well established. He requested they stop airing some, and obviously left a ton off the DVDs. I recall his stance is that a third are great, a third are ok, and a third are awful.

But if Paramount are showing 200+, his cut list will be much shorter than ever. At least for whole episodes.

We know very little about Paramount’s plans, but there should definitely be some upgrades, and there will definitely be a lot of work still to do.

admittedly I agree a little bit about several of the earliest episodes being absolute trash, but I don’t agree with stopping distribution of them because trash or not they still deserve to be seen

he also apparently made a few “director’s cut” episodes on the DVD releases whenever he allowed an episode to be released but not a certain moment, I recall the teacher’s speech about sexual intercourse in the episode No Laughing being shortened on the DVD, despite being much funnier uncut

Well Paramount+ went live with their episodes today. The main bad news is that it seems they will be very staggered, with only a few released so far.

The great news is that they are uncensored (see Woodshop), with music videos, intros, and credits more or less intact. A few nitpicks about some of those things, but generally they’ve released some good material. Cow Tipping has never been released on home video, and only low quality versions were available. Quality looks good, with some dust, specs, and small scratches occasionally present from the film, on the SD/analogue masters.

These seem to come from broadcast masters. In addition to the Woodshop lack of censorship, there is a trace of the commercial bumper left in Cow Tipping.

Does this mean king turd v3 can be improved with P+ episodes?

Absolutely. They’ve already upgraded Cow Tipping, Woodshop, and Buttbutt Hike with the mere 7 episodes they’ve added. Plus Black Hole Sun and possibly some of the other music videos. Now without channel logos.

This should be big for getting some episodes and scenes that were never available in decent quality, and hopefully many more will be added.

This is big, and hopefully many more will be added. It could end up being more about how the sources used to make KT (which I do have available) can patch a few spots in P+.

All 200 eps are supposed to be coming out on it soon enough.

Yeah, staggered this summer. The caveat is that I don’t think Paramount has ever said all episodes. >200 has been said, but that already includes some of s8 (there are 222 including S8).

So, there could be some small wiggle room for a few they really don’t want to air. And maybe a few music videos won’t make the cut. But it should be a ton of good content.

It’s also possible some edits would be baked in anyway to whatever masters they’re using because supposedly MTV altered the actual finished masters themselves in some episodes

That’s the rumor at least. I feel like this kind of information, even when from official sources, can be a bit dubious at times.

But I don’t think it will necessarily be a problem. They’re not scanning the 35mm master of the story portion of the episodes, they seem to be going to the broadcast copies, which makes sense if they want the music video portions (likely edited entirely on video) intact.

So all this means is that they need to use a broadcast version that’s not censored, and there may be a few to choose from. For example, in their Cow Tipping version, you can hear the start of the commercial bumper (this one) before a scene change. And a few different commercial bumpers existed for this episode, so there are probably a few broadcast tapes they could have chosen from, if they’ve still got them all. The same may be true for earlier, edited episodes.

Guess we will see.

Just seeing this thread.
Any updates?
I’ve been wanting to get a comprehensive B&B collection.
I originally just had the King Turd collection… although not V3 that was mentioned above I don’t think… I’m actually not totally sure which I have and it’s not mentioned in the included Word file… but I believe it’s version 2.
But I also have the DVD rips, Mike Judge Collection (I downloaded these from Amazon with a Paramount+ subscription, Blu Ray rips, etc.

Ok, so edit as I’m typing this.
I just looked it up and there are many more episodes for me to get through Amazon. They have episodes from seasons 4 though 11 using Paramount… I’m acquiring all of these as I type.
First one I got was S04E02 Cow Tipping that is mentioned above.
Definitely much sharper quality than the existing one I had… the Metallica on Beavis’ shirt is much more clear… better colors etc.
Also the file is longer at 11:35 compared to the King Turd copy at 10:49
Although my Amazon (Paramount rip) is only 173 meg compared to the King Turd at 282 meg it is much better.

So has anyone put together a definitive list of all the episodes (I generally follow The TVDB listings)… along with the best current available source?

While I have the full rips of all the DVD’s and BluRays I still have to go through and properly name them and see what to replace with my current King Turd collection.
This is a hard set to put together as some rips/sources have single episodes, double episodes, with/without music videos.

EDIT>>>stumbled on this thread right after my post so I’ll be following that as well.

This is a hard set to put together as some rips/sources have single episodes, double episodes, with/without music videos.

I have put together an excel sheet of all the various best sources. But a lot of the TV captures and tapes used to make King Turd are not publicly available. It’s thousands of files.

But more importantly, the list becomes more obsolete every couple of weeks. We are still in the early stage of paramount uploading the full episodes. We will need to reassess everything when they finally finish, but we have only had a couple dozen episodes released over 5 weeks so far. What they have listed as seasons 9 to 11 are just the Mike Judge Collection DVDs of chopped up episodes.

If you are looking through the DVDs to find episodes that are better than King Turd, I wouldn’t bother. No new DVDs have come out since KT v2. They used the Mike Judge Collection, etc. A few rips have surfaced that can help get rid of logos. But again, we probably need to wait about a year until paramount finishes releasing the whole series.

The Paramount episodes aren’t perfect. Some of the music videos suffer from conversion to progressive scan. Some of the broadcast tapes they’re using have dot crawl analog noise, and so on. But it will give us a lot of material to use for upgrades. It was already looking like we could remove just about every logo, but that should become a whole lot easier in time.

Well, the BluRays are definitely the nicest but only about 15 episodes. Do you know if there are plans for any more BluRay releases?
Does Paramount have a release schedule or is it just a wait and see sort of thing?
Do you happen to have a source for the KingTurd V3 set? I’ve had mine for years so I’m sure it’s version 2.

KT is version 2. The above discussion was about making a v3 someday using these new sources.

Season 8 is on Blu-ray because it was made in 2011, digitally, in HD.

These paramount+ episodes aren’t remastered in the sense that they’re scanning any film in HD. They aren’t even using the master analog tapes, but rather specific broadcast masters. So they’re nowhere near Blu-ray quality, but the benefit is that they include the music videos and scenes that would become censored (depending on which tapes they use!).

Oh, and paramount is a wait and see thing. They release Thursday, early morning, every 2 or 3 weeks. 4 to 9 episodes at a time, so far.

4 to 9 episodes at a time, so far.

so the episodes that are available already, are there any past edits that still apply?

They’re mostly season 7 episodes, and a couple season 4 and 5 episodes. So far, no, not edited. As I mentioned, Woodshop has the cut parts intact. Late Night with Butt-Head has the Letterman portion intact. But those would have been DVD edits rather than broadcast edits. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure if any they’ve posted so far were censored on their original MTV run.

Any updates?
I’ve been wanting to get a comprehensive B&B collection.
I originally just had the King Turd collection… although not V3 that was mentioned above I don’t think… I’m actually not totally sure which I have and it’s not mentioned in the included Word file.

Definitely. Comedians is the most famous example, so maybe they’ll pay attention for that one. They are doing some S3 episodes next week, so fingers crossed. So far, they are using broadcast masters (they have the pooled credits from multiple episodes, and you can hear the start of the commercial bumper).

But it’s not clear yet if they’re just pulling whatever they find first, or if they’re paying enough attention to make sure they will be the most unedited versions. Based on what we can see about the episode pairings (the credits, for instance) it isn’t always the first airing they’re using.

it’s even possible some of the first airing masters were altered and that was all they could find, despite still thankfully being unedited

The original opening scene only aired once: bnb had a lighter and praying mantis. They reanimated it to have two dueling mantises.

Actually it resumes the 12th of October (which probably means 11:59 Pacific time Wednesday). They seemed to stop during the new season.
