Original line?

So I just got done watching a THX promo from Lucasfilm put together in 1990 that had the line "You were lucky to get out of there" from Empire in the isolated production audio track. I would assume that this is the original line from Empire, and "You're lucky you don't taste very good" was added for either the theatrical or video release.

I never knew this and always thought "You're lucky you don't taste very good" was the original line.

It's possible that one audio track had one line, and the other had another. If I'm right the 35mm and 70mm had different audio tracks.

It's supposedly an alternate take. They claim they didn't notice when they restored the audio.

Yeah...don't buy that.

This was the exact original scene with the original production audio.

My vote to ADR change. Interesting that Lucasfilm can't get it right.

it's such a shame, I always got a little giggle at the 'you're lucky you don't taste good line' now with the alternative line, there is no reaction at all.

I downloaded an AVI with "you're lucky you dont taste very good".

I also have Jedi.

All I need now is ANH, which still has yet to finish torrenting.

Fine, mister Lucas, while you're at it why dont you replace Lando with will smith?

I think its a pretty insignificant line on the surface. But it really maintains the playfulness of the characters at different times. I think its important to the overall feel. Why this needed to be changed, or why it was...who knows.

*ahem* I heard that the "offical" story is that there was a problem with the master audio.

Believe that if you want to.

and, that caused the line to be changed...how?

Well I prefer "You're lucky to get out of there". No need to be funny, Mr. Skywalker.

Mark reckons he ad libbed the line on one take, and that was used in some versions. Apparently when they restored the films they used different audio elements, so that accounts for a lot of the changes.

I always got a little chuckle at the line, it was light and it was in-character, whereas the alternative line doesn't inspire any sort of reaction from me, it just sounds out of place and different to how i remember it.

From what I understand, there were 2 different prints: a 35 mm and a 70 mm. The 35mm print was the one used on all the VHS/LD releases except for the SE LD, because the 70mm print contained a 6 track audio mix and was easier to port over to 5.1 audio for the SE release. AFAIK, the line was simply a different take and was included in the 70mm print only. The 35mm line was much better, of course. There have been numerous instances of minute dialogue variations like this over the years. If anyone has any more info to add, please do.

Even though those are two completly different mixes and done at different times, I don't see why sometimes the sound editors put one line of dialogue in one version, and another line in the other version...

"taste very good" is a superiour line. It should be put into the UE in 2007.

Actually, the first VHS transfer (in 1984) used the 70mm print and included the line "You're lucky you don't taste very good." My guess is that the other version of the line came from an alternate take rather than a different version of the film.

As a side note, it is now regarded in the DVD industry as a bad idea to transfer from a 70mm element of a film that was originally shot 35mm. Why? 70mm prints are optical blow-ups, which increase the amount of grain present in a film element, resulting in a really ugly transfer, but with VHS it really didn't make a difference.
