Yeah, for the people who liked the show at how it actually is story wise, a fanedit like the tiktocker one could be a good shot, sure. But many people disliked the fact that Leia was rescued twice in the same series, Vader let Kenobi escape for no apparent reason in their first battle, Reva tryed to kill Luke with a poor reason, etc. So when the faneditors take this kind of thing in consideration, they aren’t just doing what they wanted to see in the series, they are making something observing the complaints of other fans too.

I think that these edits are more for the fans that didn’t like the show fully, just parts of it (but still want to liked it).

^^^ Right on. Admittedly, this guy’s version presents and feels more like a “director’s extended cut” of a movie - and that’s what I appreciate about it. Pretty much my only (or biggest) personal requirement of a fan-edit is that it doesn’t transform the material into something that it never was -or- was never meant to be. At the end of the day, the source material IS canon (for better or for worse) and I prefer to consume my media as canonically as possible (-even if some of it subjectively sucks).

Update

V2 is good and fine, but it was reported there’s a slight brightness-like render bug in the conversation with Haja and Obi-Wan. I’ll do a re-render tonight and upload and replace, so that whenever you want to watch the edit again you can have the bugfree version.

Thank you for all your positive feedback, and I’m soon done with the Credits.txt file (im at page 15 of this thread). Hopefully upload soon.

I am planning on adding Pixel Joke’s effects to this for my own personal edit. The stuff he is has planned is unreal.

I agree completely with Docking Bay here. I approached the last jedi the same way with Poppasketti’s edit, that way I can actually consider them canon without have much if any dispute with those that have just seen the theater version. I kinda view the TikTok version as an almost jumping off place for others to make edits from yanno. I’m even considering using it to make my own edit with his as a base but including all the best ideas from all those far more talented then myself.

Also Damn! scottkin That reddit editing is amazing thats exactly what I’m talking about! I feel like Grievous over here adding things to my collection! LOL

This is the way.

Anjohan, I noticed that during the new rescue, the color of Leia’s coat changes in a few shots to the former green, instead of staying brown. I think that you probably noticed it but let this pass by, since it’s just a few glimpses, but I’m just saying in case you haven’t seen this detail.

(By the way, thank you for uploading V2 😉)

Yes and no. The shots you refer to are far from pov and Leia is standing near the green-tinted windows with the reflection from the water outside, so I let it pass as reflection. Hehe!

I finally got to watch the edit, having previously only seen the first half of the series. I really liked it.

A number of things stand out to me though:

  1. The pre-title intro is incredibly short. Because I got the editing itch myself, I tried moving the title later, right after he sits up at night trying to contact QuiGon. From the title, I transitioned to the first Alderaan scene. It works really well.

  2. The underline in the title is still odd. I know it’s minor, but it’s very random and puzzling once your eye sees it.

  3. Not necessarily an issue with your edit as much as with the original, but those inquisitors hang out for a long time on Tatooine doing nothing. I tried rearranging their scenes into a tighter sequence, and it flows pretty well. In my version, Owen confronts ObiWan, then the inquisitors land. Instead of walking to the bar, they give their anti-Jedi speech and interrogate Owen. They then proceed to the bar, where we discover that it’s not actually ObiWan they were looking for.

  4. On a related note, in the edit, it’s hard to tell why the Jedi has been hung/hung himself. The inquisitors left already and he never showed up again after the bar scene. The TikTok guy’s version implies that he got killed at the bar, and while that’s abrupt, it makes more sense, especially if the street interrogation gets moved up like I suggested.

  5. I’m fond of the new merged rescue scene, but after watching the whole film, I wonder if it’s really necessary or the best choice. It’s odd that there is such a high-tech and expansive base hidden under the city. It introduces tiny consistency issues, the most significant of which you have needed to address via extra digital manipulation. It is a cooler sequence than the original, but it’s kind of puzzling how easy it is for ObiWan to get in and out, why he is able to use the force slightly without alerting Vader, and why there’s not an instant alert throughout the city as soon as he emerges from the sewers. I get that it’s a setup, so that can explain some of the ease. It just seems maybe too elaborate just to get him outside where he has to be caught again. It’s also a bit incongruous as the rest of the edited movie takes place on the fringes of the galaxy. By making this a major shiny base, it sticks out as the only “civilized” location in the film, and it’s only a sub-location.

  6. It’s a sweet moment when ObiWan repairs Lola, but in the edit, we don’t get the scene where she gets broken by the mercenary leader. It’s not a great scene, so I understand why it was cut, but it raises questions.

  7. Since you drop the plotline with Reva recapturing Leia, why do you still show her looking in doors and finding the escape tunnel? Once again, I was able to tighten this sequence up by rearranging nearby scenes. I merged a couple of the early dual scenes and then went from the inquisitors in the streets to Tala leading Leia through the tunnel, then immediately to Tala leaving to rescue ObiWan, before cutting back to the conclusion of the dual. It flows well and cuts the momentum of events much less.

  8. The spacing and amount of scenes where we see Vader’s ship coming and the pre-rebels prepping for the attack is awkward. I made some efforts to tighten it up, but the original really drags this out while also including enough solid character stuff that it’s hard to trim. And how long is Leia working on that door???

  9. I wish that the Order 66 shots of Anakin had also been de-aged.

  10. The call from Organa is awkward. I was able to trim it by cutting straight from Leia agreeing to enter the vent to her opening the hatch. Then I had the Empire land and start shooting the door. Then we see ObiWan quietly thinking (after his phone call that didn’t happen).

  11. I moved the shot of the transport flying out the atmosphere so that it’s a quick cutaway near the start of Reva’s attack on Vader. In the original, I barely understood what had happened with the second transport escaping, and then it took way too long to reach space.

  12. I love most of your music choices throughout the edit, but when Vader lands for the final dual, isn’t that a mix of the Separatist march and the Imperial march? The Separatist part just seems random.

  13. What is the purpose of the final Mustafar scene?

I think that’s it for feedback. Overall, I really enjoyed your work and think it’s very well done. Your editing choices are sometimes bold, and I think that really pays off. Your transitions are polished, and your story has a lot of heart with minimal distraction.

I’m not sure about posting my own “edit,” since over 90% is directly derived from your own, but I’d be happy to share it with you if you want to see any of my changes in action. I made quite a few tiny adjustments as well just to tighten up dialogue etc. Let me know if you’re interested.

Thanks again for sharing your work.

ANJO- some brief notes/opinions
brilliant opening. Though IMO you rushed the saloon scene.
I like the cuts to the scene between Owen and Reva, although the inquisitors disappear too quickly. They are suddenly 100 feet away.
Nice rescoring during the landing platform scene.
I kind of liked the Leia dressing down her cousin scene but I get why you cut it.
The bag over Leia’s head is good, but maybe it could be done better? i’m not sure that i would’ve known what happened if i hadn’t watched the original.
I like that you cut OWK pulling his cloak back to show everyone his lightsaber. why on earth would he do that?
I’m conflicted over OWK and the fake jedi, when he says “i’ll do it.” it seems a little off. even though it was played for laughs I actually kind of liked the original version.
Changing the Fortress Inquisitorius entry scene to the fake jedi helping him makes no sense to me. It’s too big. in glancing around the comments i’m really surprised that some people like it. it definitely doesn’t look like a “sewer,” more like what it is, a sea. it doesn’t make sense that there is a sea in one of the underlevels. and to someone like me, who recognizes the Fortress Inquisitorius, it’s soo out of place. Haja’s lines don’t gel either. i would just revert it to the original rescue scenes if nothing else. maybe a little edited somehow.
I would cut out the “granddaughter maybe” line. But maybe leave in the Leia “you think the less you say” line. but that’s just me.
I’m conflicted about the scene where OWK catches Leia. I think the sound effect is unnecessary. I would also leave out the duel on Mustafar flashback and OWK saying “Anakin.” the cut to vader opening his eyes says it all without spelling it out. i think your idea is good one, but it raises some questions. like “is Vader able to sense every time OWK uses the force?”
I would cut ANY mention of Reva knowing who Vader is. In other media Vader has always killed anyone who knew his identity. one of my biggest gripes in the series.
I like how you cut the auto-pilot-trade-route stuff, and had Leia instead asking if OWK could use the force to fix Lola. brilliant.
I liked cutting the stormtroopers questioning Kenobi in the back of the transport. I liked Ewan’s acting there, with the lines about her mother, but it’s not worth the rest of the scene, with the OWK gaff, and the weird alien expressing his distrust of them at the checkpoint, but not earlier?
I wish you could edit the gun out of OWK’s hand, as he’s still pointing it at the stormtroopers when he’s on the ground. that’s mare than the usual stormtrooper ineptitude.
Ok, I love moving the “the years have made you weak Obi-Wan” to the fire scene. I never would have thought of it. It makes the scene make more sense somehow (not make sense necessarily, but MORE sense). Although it’s confusing when he still seems obsessed with finding him a couple scenes later.
The de-aging is VERY well done.
The way Reva tries to sneak attack right when he is distracted is perfect. I wish there was a way to edit the scene with the POV from far behind directly before though, to show her walking up behind him.
I would cut the GI saying that “revenge does wonders for the will to live” line, as it suggests that they know that she will live, and they just let her. but i’m sure they will be making a Reva series soon (sigh).
great job cutting the scene of Haja “protecting” Leia from OWK when she storms off.
I think I like the flashbacks immediately after Vader/Anakin yelling “OBI WAN!” the ending of their duel had a very different feel.
If it were not for Reva speaking Anakin’s name, or ESPECIALLY the “sewer” scene, this would be the edit i would keep. i really don’t mean to sound too critical, you did an amazing job. the best i’ve seen yet, i think by far. if you made a version without the “sewer scene” your edit would be my “chosen one.”

Bravo sir! I watched your edit last night and it entirely succeeds in its central ambition to create a movie out of a TV series.

You’ve done brilliantly to make the pacing match that of a feature length film, and you’ve refocused the attention on Obi Wan (and it helps tremendously that in Ewan McGregor we have an A-list star, in fact rewatching his expressions in close up I’d say his work here might be the best acting performance we’ve had in a Star Wars production).

The original series had so many great moments but also a few clunky ones, that either confused or raised a question mark. You’ve deftly negated them all with your edit. I’m also thankful that your choice of shots to keep or jettison match my own taste - shaky cam is nearly entirely gone as are those moments where the production values seemed a little below par. Your musical additions also serve to elevate the onscreen action. As a result the 2 and a quarter hours of footage seem more cinematic and Kenobi can take its place alongside Rogue One and Solo as a standalone adventure.

Any nitpicks? Well like someone above I do miss little Leia’s memorable putdown of her cousin (recalls her burn of Tarkin in A New Hope), and the sewer segueway into the Imperial Base isn’t 100% successful (but I dont know that there’s any more could be done given what you have to work with). However these are minor things, and if you were watching this version without having seen the series it would work - and I guess that’s really fundamental to a good edit.

Well done!

One last comment, and I hopefully speak for all the 4K TV owners, if you do continue to hone the edit then a higher resolution version would be the icing on the cake.
