THX on 35mm Tech IB preservation - HELP NEEDED (work in progress) — Page 19

Is it possible to make an original '71 edit using the letterbox laserdisc? Being how people who’ve seen the Grindhouse version say the only real differences are a few scenes near the middle have been switched around, and an extended scene with SEN and the boys (does this mean the '71 verson has the 30 extra seconds or the '78 edit)?

I know the color timing of the widescreen LD’s have been altered (both US and Japan) but Cedric T Sealion said the original P&S NTSC vhs has the correct timing. I’m wondering if the first Japan P&S laserdisc is the same as this vhs he’s talking about? (cat# 08JL-611620).

Another THX 1138 project lost to the void prison.

The lack of communication(updates) has been really unfortunate, especially for those of us who donated money to this project.

I was about to post the same thing. I know there have been lots of real-world things in people’s lives that have affected this project. But it’s been six years at this point and the donors have nothing to show for their support. At the very least, there needs to be some kind of communication happening.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

Hard disks and all are in the hands of Poita, who’s had a very very unfortunate succession of health issues that I’m not allowed to go into, but I trust that it will be completed when he gets better. I’m the first one who would like to see that restoration complete, I adore this film. Some projects are just not very lucky, but I trust that it will see the light of day eventually.

Another year goes by with nothing. I know this wasn’t a scam, but it sure feels like one at this point. Have any sample frames of the better print been shared? I don’t want to be mean, but I am upset at this point. Timetable is part of the reason why I donated. I wouldn’t have donated to a “maybe we’ll have something in a decade” kind of project. I know real people have real lives, but I don’t think it’s okay to be ghosting the donors about what’s going on. It’s been 7 1/2 years at this point - coupled with no communication, it’s really hard to feel good about my donation.

Very much agree with this take. People gave money with the idea that something would come to fruition, eventually, and that we were helping to preserve an important film. But here we are approaching what, ~8-9 years with nothing to show for it? And to add insult to injury we get continued radio silence from everyone involved. And yes, it’s been addressed multiple times over the years as to why this was/is the case. I can understand and empathize with the health-related issues——we all have our burdens——but that really should have been addressed back then when it was clear the project was in jeopardy; someone should have taken over the project, or at the very least people should have reached out for help within the community.

And now we are put into the position of keeping quiet indefinitely, because if we do “complain” or say anything critical then we are insensitive jerks who don’t care. That’s really not fair to those of us who just wanted to help this project succeed. I think at this point the money that was donated should be returned. The mods need to take action at this point, whatever that entails, otherwise it really does feel like this was some kind of crowd-funded scam.

Brilliant idea… thanks for the absolutely unnecessary contribution.

Before 2021 Fantasia was the worst restored/preserved. Second worst was THX1138. But since then THX1138 is now last place since Fantasia has come so far. Right now you essentially have two choices for THX1138. Either the laserdisc rip or the Grindhouse Edition. And the laserdisc version looks pretty rough in this day and age.

Nope, this is the only way to go for now:
