While I would never discourage someone attempting to make a fan edit in the realm that you describe, I completely disagree that it’s more impactful replacing Phil Collins with a musical number (also, the “musical number” used in the example still felt it had background singers on it, even if it actually didn’t).
The soundtrack of this film by Phil Collins is a masterpiece totally underappreciated. I feel the combined performance of the scenes and Phil’s singing/music couldn’t be topped. Even if you subscribe to the notion that you are being guided about how to feel by the song itself, so what? Isn’t that what a movie, book, or audio piece is supposed to do? And if you disagree with that, the fact that it does guide you exactly where it was determined to take you means it achieved it’s goal masterfully and is reason enough to let well enough alone.
