WORKPRINT 1.1 NOW AVAILABLE. PM for link(s).

There are currently 2 versions, or cuts, of this fanedit.

  • Standard Cut: 2hrs 4min
  • Great Escape Cut: 2hrs 5min

The “Great Escape” cut incorporates the Episode 4 Inquisitor base rescue into the Daiyu rescue. Thanks to Anjohan for the key sequence to making this work. I have taken his initial idea and taken my own approach. This was done by completely restructuring the Daiyu scenes. There are now TWO rescue attempts on Daiyu. The first attempt fails and the second attempt succeeds. I creatively edited the girl drug scene and trooper/kid/fake jedi scenes to set this up. The only differences come between the 25:30-58:00 min portion of the film. This is the planet of Daiyu sequence, everything before and after are the same.

My workprints are pretty close to a V1. I have not created the opening scroll yet. I am looking for transitions that take you out of the film due to technical edit reasons (audio/video/wipes) so these can be cleaned up for V1. May add some additional wipes to enhance that Star Wars feel, am open to suggestions. Also looking for any story inconsistencies or references to cut scenes that I simply missed while editing. I’m pretty locked in on the narrative story and structure I want to tell as I made these for myself, but I am open to discussion on some decisions that were made.

STAR WARS: EPISODE 3 - CHILD OF A JEDI
This edit will be the 3rd in my personal edits of the Rewritten Prequel Trilogy.

  • Episode 1: Prelude to War (TPM and AOTC Combined Edit)
  • Episode 2: Revenge of the Sith
  • Episode 3: Child of a Jedi (Obi-Wan Series Movie Edit; 2 cuts available)

This thread will be utilized for only Episode 3.

KEY CHANGES:

  • New Intros for Leia and Reeva
  • Inquisitors and Jedi removed from Tatooine.
  • Obi-Wan is less pathetic, more hesitant and doubting with some guilt.
  • AOTC Flashbacks and Obi/Vader Ep 6 fight have been moved into the Bacta tank.
  • No 2nd Kidnapping or Inquisitor Base infiltration
  • Reeva dies at the hands of Vader in this film.
  • Movie ends with Vader/Reeva duel and Obi-Wan/crew escaping Jabiim
  • A mid credit scene has been added to show Obi-Wan packing up his cave and seeing Qui-Gon.
  • Season 2 Episode 0 fanedit will show Reeva survive and Obi-Wan meeting Luke so viewers are ready for Obi-Wan Season 2 or the Reeva show.

Opening:

Bacta Tank Part 1 (with Pre-AOTC Flashbacks)

Bacta Tank Part 2 (with Ep 6 Obi/Vader scenes) Revised 6/26

Ending
https://vimeo.com/723458359

Most of Episode 4 and 6 have been cut. There is no 2nd kidnapping or Inquisitor base rescue. I have cannibalized scenes from episodes 4 and 6 to enhance other parts of the film. This includes part of the last Vader and Obi duel.

Much more to come!

Current Runtimes:

  • Standard Cut: 2hrs 4min
  • Great Escape Cut: 2hrs 5min
  • Season 2 Premier: 27 min

Substantial edits: (more to come)

Meeting Point
https://vimeo.com/724185281

Removed extremely negative Obi-Wan, just seemed out of character. Also they now believe that Freck COULD be their contact. As originally written. “Blast! No one showed up, Woe is us. But good thing this random transport that showed up out of nowhere is here to take us town!” Just bad writing.

Stormtroopers on Truck
https://vimeo.com/724185326

Removed any reference to them looking for Jedi. They are grunts in a mining colony just trying to get home after a hard day in the mines. They wouldn’t know, or care, about Jedi. Also removed Obi-Wan’s slip up by calling Leia by her real name.

Obi-Wan and Reeva chat through the Door
https://vimeo.com/727789324

Rearranged this sequence to allow Reeva’s anger for Obi-Wan to be revealed BEFORE Obi-Wan offers to help. She blames both Vader AND Obi-Wan almost equally for what happened in the Jedi Temple and the only reason she hasn’t previously attempted to take out Vader, is she also wanted Kenobi dead, and she needed Vader/Obi-wan to fight to give her a chance. Only way to explain why Reeva waited 10 years to make her move. Also removed “tell them we wish to talk/negotiate” as this seemed silly to me when they have a door between them and nobody actually does this.

Here are some additional, smaller, edits: (more to come)

Lightsaber Dig
https://vimeo.com/724185259

This one may be considered a Nitpick. I just didn’t like that there were no landmarks or indicators as to where to find his light saber. Also the Sand Dunes would have changed 100x times with the wind and the lightsabers could be buried under 30 feet or more of Sand. I shortened the scene so I no longer think about these things.

Tala Blaster Holster
https://vimeo.com/727782579

I removed the later scene where Bail conveniently and stupidly reveals names and plans over the intercom and unfortunately this also meant losing the character development with Tala. I used the Blaster Holster scene in the Path hideout during character introductions.

I’m intrigued to see which Ep4 scenes you plan to integrate. Some of them have potential.

For example the small moment in Ep4 where Leia takes Obi-Wan’s hand. Compare it to the Ep5 scene of them escaping Vader on Roken’s crowded ship and I see the faint chance that moment could be spliced together with the Ep5 escape, inserted before Roken sits down to talk to Kenobi. The discrepancies in the slightly too empty seats around them could maybe be obscured, but the only issue would be Obi-Wan’s slight costume change.

Anyways I’m happy to see that there are at least two projects being worked on for this series, and I can’t wait to watch your edit as well.

Both the opening and closing videos above include pieces of ep. 4, including Leia taking Obi’s hand. Great minds think alike!

Not impressed with episode 6. Felt like a TV season finale with forced happy endings, not an epic movie ending. Even the Vader fight was way too short and a bit boring. And we already saw the broken mask bit with Rebels.

I will be taking bits and pieces from the episode (ie: music cues) but my movie edit will end with Episode 5. A workprint will be available by end of week. Will also do an Obi-Wan Season 2, Episode 0 with the left over pieces to setup season 2.

Uploaded a revised ending and my new Bacta tank sequence. Links have been added to the first post. The bacta tank sequence is now about 5 minutes and includes the pre-aotc flashbacks and parts of the Obi-Vader duel from Episode 6. In my edit, the film ends before the Obiwan and Vader final dual, but I wanted to salvage parts of it and work it into the new narrative. I absolutely love it and I hope you guys like it!

I really liked the color correction you provided in the duel between Obi-Wan and Vader, now I can see properly (finally)! But personally, I think the sequence was a bit confuse. I missed a few transitions between the fight, like Obi-Wan crushing Vader’s helmet, and if this is a mental battle, I think Vader’s ship shouldn’t appear.

Glad you like the color correction. I hated the original coloring of this show. I significantly trimmed the Obi/Vader fight. There is no Obi being buried, and no rocks being lifted or thrown. I wanted to keep the vision more of a nightmare sequence that nobody clearly wins. Just like the AOTC training sequences. The broken helmet was not caused by Obi-Wan in this, it is merely a nightmarish glimpse that lets Obi-Wan see behind the mask. The good in him, and the bad.

I have made two more adjustments to the scene, will upload later today, to sell the idea that this is all in his head. I added a bacta tank scene before the “talk”, lengthened the nightmarish Vader walk through the valley, and adjusted the score a bit.

Would love to get rid of the ship in the shot as I agree with you, but I don’t have the skills to paint that out. The whole planet has a dream sequence, not reality feel, to it so I can look past it, but in the perfect edit, yes that would be painted out.

Appreciate the thoughts.

I do disagree with the final fight feeling like a tv fight. I found it a far better fight than rots or rotj. Each to their own.

Wasn’t so much the actual fight, more the Volume created sets. It didn’t feel grounded to me. And the floating rocks instantly reminds me of TLJ. Had I seen this before TLJ, prob would have loved it!

The TV reference was more about all the subplots, happy endings, and everything was wrapped up TOO happy too quickly after all the dramatic events we had just witnessed.

Obi Wan with Leia on the landing platform I loved and is the sole reason I created the season 2 episode 0 edit. I just loved both these performers for the entirely of the show. Both are a true joy to watch.

Workprint 1.1 is now available with further adjustments to the color grade and some small fixes.
Also, a second cut of this Fanedit now exists:

Special thanks to forum member ‘thevarsek’ who performed some audio assistance and helped to isolate some dialogue. Much appreciated.

Wanted to share 3 sequences from the “Great Escape” cut to show how I integrated the episode 4 inquisitor base rescue into Episode 2. There are TWO rescue attempts in this cut. The first attempt fails and he is captured by Flea, the second attempt leads him to the imperial base under the city.

First edit sequence is when Obi-Wan meets the drug girl. I rearranged some dialogue so the final line of the sequence is now, “How about some Information?” Next time we see Obi-Wan, he is in the Drug lab. Drug girl leads Obi-Wan to the Drug lab…seemed logical to me.

https://vimeo.com/727776965

Next edit sequence is after Obi-Wan escapes Flea, we establish Reeva in the Imperial base (previously show her interrogating Leia in the same Imperial base) with appropriate backup to capture Obi-Wan. Then we see Obi-Wan meet the clone trooper who is working WITH the kid and fake Jedi. The kid even throws a glance to the clone trooper when talking about Money!

https://vimeo.com/727775719

Final sequence is Obi-Wan entering the base. Thanks to Anjohan for the idea. I tweaked his idea to better suit my edit and my tastes. Added dialogue from original Leia rescue to this rescue. “Your father sent me, I’m here to help you.”

Thank you for ending the film on Jabim and avoiding the question of “why doesn’t Obi-Wan just kill Vader?” Color me intrigued.

OT member Phase3 had a wonderful suggestion for altering the final duel in the Kenobi series so that we don’t end on Obi-Wan’s baffling choice to let Vader live. The basic idea is to move the burying obi-wan in rocks to the very end of the duel so that after Kenobi walks away from Vader with a sliced helmet, he screams out “Obi-Wan” then cracks the ground with the force, proceeding to bury Obi-Wan, walk away from the fight the victor. Then Obi-Wan climbs out and the fight is over.

If we can make this work, I think it would make the duel even more amazing than it already is (I quite enjoyed the fight outside of the nonsensical ending where Obi-Wan lets Vader live).

I created a mock-up of this idea. The changes so far:

-Reversing the flow of Kenobi retreating so it links smoothly to the later part of the duel.
-Flip shot of ground breaking for visual continuity.
-Removed Vader’s line “And that is why you will always lose” as he breaks the ground, rough sfx replaced (can be polished later)
-Cropped out vader of wide shot of ground breaking for visual continuity.
-Removed vader’s line “Did you really think you could defeat me?” after he buries him.
-Rearranged shots of Vader walking away for better flow

The one key change remaining to tie this whole idea together is somehow changing the final shots of the rock burying so that Vader’s helmet is still sliced in half. I don’t know who would have the special effects skills to do this but perhaps a community effort would achieve this.
