As the next episode renders, I’ve been thinking a little about structuring the finale of the show.

I think there’re three options here:

  1. You prefer to watch a RotS/Siege of Mandalore combination fanedit, such as Delpheas’. In this case, you do that (and there’s no work I need to do to enable that, hooray).
  2. You prefer to keep RotS as a complete un-interrupted movie, or want to watch your own preferred RotS fanedit. In this case, I need to simply cut the Siege of Mandalore episodes into the TCW:R style, with appropriate breakpoints to fit around RotS.
  3. You’d prefer it if RotS was broken into episodes of TCW:R that could intercut neatly with Siege of Mandalore, roughly chronologically, but with sensible lengths of episode, and without merging animation and live action in a single episode. In this case, I need to produce a small number of RotS episodes (in the TCW:R ‘branding’) that break at the appropriate points.

I think, for the Siege of Mandalore content, that there are three main chunks of content:

  1. The first episode, and beginning of the second, until Maul escapes. This part references that the Chancellor has been captured, leading nicely into a time gap that the beginning of RotS can fit into.
  2. The fight with Maul and his capture, from the second episode. This part references that Anakin has been asked to spy on the Chancellor, and Obi-Wan’s about to go to Utapau, giving you a good 50-minute chunk of RotS to fit in before.
  3. The third and fourth episodes. They begin with the ‘Plot to destroy the Jedi’ conversation from the movie, so should happen after that. They reference a lot of scenes from RotS - including Anakin’s fall and Order 66. For this reason it’s probably sensible to play them AFTER RotS concludes.

On that last point though, you COULD possibly have RotS’ Plot to Destroy the Jedi, Anakin’s fall, and Order 66, up until Obi-Wan returns from Utapau, and THEN cut to the conclusion of Siege of Mandalore (with the ship crashing on the ice planet), and THEN have a final episode of RotS with Obi-Wan and Anakin on Utapau and all the wrap-up. That might hit a bit harder, so I’m interested in thoughts on that. The issue with that would be that you’d then want to have the two epilogue scenes from Siege of Mandalore (Ahsoka and Rex digging graves, then Vader finding her lightsaber) at the end of the live-action conclusion to the movie. And doing it that way would mess with the people who prefer to just watch the animated episodes as one, wrapped around RotS - I’d have to make two versions of the final episodes.

I think, probably, that cutting RotS into episodes might be the wrong way to go, because that way I have to choose an edit to use for RotS, which won’t satisfy everyone. If I simply cut Siege of Mandalore into three episodes, then the first episode comes before RotS, and the third comes after RotS, and the second one can go either before or after depending on how the viewer wants to play it. (It’s probably best after for a first-time viewer, but before for someone who knows the movie).

Interested in thoughts here.
