link please? would also love to hear what your plans for the next movie are as well as your vision for Episode 9. Also after watching the clips on Vimeo and reading the reason why I almost wish you put palpatine saying “kill him” from ROTS for shadowing his return, but absolutely love the clips and the change list I read through.

Sent! I’ve actually released Episode 8 in its beta form and Episode 9 in an alpha cut, so you can find the links to those threads in my signature.

I thought about adding that “Kill him” line in someway, but since the thought only crosses Rey’s mind in the novel and isn’t actually an audible communication, I think it’s best to just see the results of her thought through her aggression.

Hope you enjoy, feel free to post a review when you watch!

Interesting, that makes sense. A fun note about the audiobook version of the novel is the reader uses snokes voice when reading that line and that is what gave me the idea. But your logic is sound!

Thanks for all the great feedback! Glad you enjoyed many of the changes, and I think it’s a good thing if you don’t notice everything on a first watch, that means it is integrated smoothly. The reason I didn’t have Starkiller destruction setup like HAL’s wonderful edit is that personally I think it is a very tired trope for the “bad guys” to lose mere seconds before they were about to win. This was an awesome, tense storyline decision in 1977 with A New Hope, but we’ve seen that already in Star Wars! With a major complaint of The Force Awakens being how much it resembles A New Hope, I didn’t want that same exact plotline being in here too. I tried to create a more unique version of Starkiller’s destruction so it doesn’t just feel like Death Star 3. I think the way I framed it kept the drama more focused on Rey and Kylo here which is a much more interesting dynamic than another superweapon in my opinion.

Hey Acbagel. I’m sorry for my late response and thanks for your great answer. I understand your opinion and it works really good. But on the other hand really like the dramatic effect if Han dies and to make it more worse the Starkiller destroys the Republic. And it fits a little bit more with General Hux line in Last Jedi “The Republic is no more”
I like both Version and will see which one I prefer for my replacement. Thanks for your awesome work.

It’s a cool idea, and perhaps I’ll look into a bit more when I get back around to my Sequel trilogy edits. I am planning for a few big changes but it’s still quite a bit away. In my series though, Snoke IS Palpatine so I could use either voice as I’m planning on trying to make Palpatine’s return less “random”.

I’ll definitely be taking another pass on this whole sequence in the future to try and make it more unique. Who knows how it might change by the final release here! Thanks for your feedback 😃

I forgot to mention this in the review that I send you on The Force Awakens on Discord. I recommend you remove Finn’s sanitation comment. It’s another way to make Finn a joke and just plainless comic relief, a comment that didn’t needed to be there. Finn being a janitor going on the battlefield doesn’t really make any sense.

Saw you asked and just sent the Episode 9 edit your way, sorry I lose track of my Discord conversations sometimes!

I did remove the other comments about his janitorial status, though my reasoning for leaving this one instance in was because I do like his exchange with Han here and it demonstrates Finn really only cared about Rey and not so much for the bigger picture of the Resistance as a whole at this point. I think that helps out the little bit of character development he does get in the next two movies so that’s why I left in this initial comment about it. Thanks for the feedback!

Finished watching episode 7 workprint v3.2

Here are some thoughts I had about it. All together a great edit I enjoyed watching it.

After the crawl it starts on Jakku, the inserted “white” desert scene feels somewhat out of place. It felt like one to many landscape/desert scene jump. I like the idea here. I think one or two desert scenes max would work just fine and then a shot of the crashed star destroyer from far away could be better instead of “white” desert scene (If there is any suitable footage). Then transitoning to the back of the star destroyer end then again closer as it is.

Nice additon of voices in force interigation with Poe it works really well. And all the future ones as well.
Great edit of Reys vision of Ach-To on Jakku. loved it.

Scene with Unkar Plot telling to follow Rey cut to Finn waking up on Jakku seems to fast/sudden to me. If possible let the scene stay a second longer after Unkar Plot orders to follow Rey and then it cuts to Finn waking up.

Finn vs stormtrooper on Takoodana:
I like that the dialogue was added, but I think there is a bit to much of it. I think after they started fighting no more dialogue is needed. The dialogue during and towards the end of the fight felt a bit forced to me.

While watching Rey interigation scene I could tell when you reused the same shot of Kylo Rens close up twice (in original it is a shot when he worships vader), but I do realise that there isn’t much footage you can work with here.

Rey escapes using the force could maybe have few less shots/scenes, but it works as it is just fine. I really like this change compared to the original mindtrick escape.

Finn vs Kylo:
The scene is fine and works the way it is, but maybe it would be even better if Kylo vs Finn would have been even shorter. Maybe just cuting the part when they clash lightsaber and they stayed clashed for some time with Finn being leaned beside the tree. Just a random idea.

Rey vs Kylo:
Not that much to do with your edit just an opinon I wanted to add. This is more just me not liking for how long they stayed saberlocked at the end of the battle before Rey taps into the force (in this re-edit the dark side). I don’t like this streached out saberlocks in general. When both combatants are staying firm in the position basically just looking at each other. And in The force awakens it feels like it lasts forever, I mean mostly the part before Rey remembers about the force.

Really liked the Luke vision idea. Transition when Rey wakes up after seeing Luke seems a bit abrupt. Maybe have screen turn to white and then Rey wakes up. Or from lightly dream fade slowly into black immediately following with Rey waking up.

There are things that I have written here you might already be aware off, since it is a beta release. All the issues I had were very minor ones. Pretty much liked all the changes and additions.
For me this edit already is an improvment over the original film and I really enjoyed it.

I’m just gonna say it now…I’m going to ask for links to any project you’re on. I’ve heard nothing but great things about your edits. The amount of work your putting into these things is above what we deserve. So I’m going to officially ask for the links to:
Heirs of the Force
Fate of the Jedi
Legacy of the Force
The Bad batch
The way of Mandalore

There I did it…Obviously its at your discretion and if their even completed yet.
You will make our family extremely happy if you could send those links.
Thank you and if there’s some place I can donate for your efforts please provide a link as well.

Hey, Scotty. I appeciate your excitement and hope the edits deliver what you’re looking for! A few of them are still in the “beta” phase but they’re all fully watchable. I’ll be making more updates throughout the year as well.

No need to donate! Your happiness while watching makes it more than worth it for me. I love Star Wars and it is my pleasure to spread some of that love through fan editing. I’ll send you a DM.

I’ll give a more in depth review in a while but the one main thing that stands out to me that needs changing is the initial music cue of the main title when the words STAR WARS appear. The sequel for whatever reason has the pitch higher than all other SW films. If you listen to the intro for A New Hope vs. TFA you can here the difference. This has always stood out to me.

I’m digging the ideas going into your sequel trilogy edits, particularly the force power scaling stuff. May I have access to view your sequel edits please?

Acbagel,

I hope the children are well as well as the rest of your family.

After a lengthy period of time, I finally was able to watch the work print. This was quite impressive in really altering the first of the sequel trilogy for the better.

  1. I do have one strong opinion with regard to making this more in line with legends material and the Luke Skywalker of the OT. The Luke we originally were introduced to was very active in taking the initiative. He was not passively waiting around to make things happen.

In the dream sequence in the end, I would strongly recommend adding a line or two from Luke advising Rey to come to him. The audience could interpret this as his actual communication or just a force illusion, but we really should have Luke taking charge. This enhances his character in a very simple and subtle way. This demonstrates that he was not simply waiting around hoping for the best. It also shows he was not a whiny quitter as portrayed in the next movie.

I think this could function as a parallel to Obi Wan telling Luke to go to Yoda in ESB with Luke advising Rey to go to him.

  1. I scoured through many of the comments here, and I share many of the complimentary sentiments along with your goals for this edit that I believe really worked well. There are many to list, but I will briefly go over a few.
  • Thank you for giving back some dignity to Han Solo’s character. I mean, did we really need to have him as a criminal smuggler again? This was a lazy plot point. Not to mention his relationship with Leia completely falling apart was rather extreme.

  • The rearranged opening worked a lot better versus the theatrical order of things.

  • While still over the top for me, it was good to have Rey’s force use diminished and more gradual. I understand you cannot remove all of it without the story becoming overly incoherent. The one that still is highly problematic was Rey force grabbing Luke’s lightsaber while overpowering Kylo Ren for it in the process. There is no way she should be able to have superior force use in that scenario. Is there a way to cleanly remove Kylo trying to take the lightsaber and only show Rey reaching out for it?

  • I also liked removal of the eradication of another planet. As you stated, this was just another plot point that made this movie resemble ANH. This gave the movie a more unique feel to it.

  • In this edit, Finn is a likable character and not a pathetic joke. This might be the most impressive feat.

  1. I caught 3 audio transition issues:
  • Around the 22:40 mark we hear the offer for junk while still in the prior scene.
  • At around the 25:25 mark going into a conversation between Kylo and Hux, they start talking while we see Finn in the prior scene.
  • Unfortunately, there was a third audio transition towards the end of the movie that I neglected to note down and cannot remember where it was. I think it happened around the First Order abandoning the base, but not certain. If I have a chance, I will look for it again.

==> Overall, I like that you incorporate good ideas from various different editors. If you ever do get back to this, I am confident you can incorporate what other editors have incorporated since your last revision in the last few years to make this movie the best quality possible.

Thank you for your hard work.
