The Kenobi Movie Show (Spoilers) — Page 37

I notice a lot of you complain about the directing and visual effects - and I agree on both, but I have a feeling the majority of the budget is saved for the latter half - and especially the inevitable Kenobi Duel. I mean, let’s be real - they kinda have to do something in-between ROTS duel and A New Hope duel.

Something that start like the ROTS duel and ends with them both injured and weaker for Episode IV.

I agree they will have saved a lot of budget for that climactic duel since it’s such a big selling point for the whole series.

I don’t really feel like OWK looks cheap, it’s just shot and framed differently and most of the time I don’t mind it.

Really the cheapest looking thing that I’ve seen in the Disney era is the uniform worn by the rebel guard in the prison episode of the Mandalorian. That was top to bottom hideous and exacerbated by how it looked like it didn’t even fit the actor.

Actually i like that the series has ‘lower production qualities / cinematography’ so far. Why? Take Rogue One as an example. They made the final battle on and over Scarif so ePIC and EmOTiOnAl … and then you 're supposed to watch the original STAR WARS. Actual movie goers are way too spoiled by the ‘grand-and-epic’ Marvel age of movies. They aren’t invested in the actual character drama anymore. The Obi-Wan series goes for a lower epicness and more character drama. And that’s why it is good so far. I know, don’t judge a season until you have seen it.

We will see.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

The grass is always greener, so we could very well have been sitting here wishing it had instead been a six-part miniseries. Granted. However, I do feel compelled by the idea of what this would be like as a single anthology film. For one thing, it would easier to include in a watch-through of the main saga. Harder to imagine a presentation of the films but with a miniseries thrown in as well. Maybe that’s more of a formatting thing. Or maybe I am a little OCD.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I love Anchorhead’s point about wishing for a more focused story that a movie could provide on one hand, but on the other, also loving the little character moments that a episodic series provides that may have been lost otherwise. That little conversation between Leia and Obi, about her birth parents, and Obi recalling fragmented memories of his own family, was a really nice moment.

I have to say, though, I feel like this show, of all shows, shouldn’t have needed to “save the budget” for the last few episodes. But again, we don’t really know why it looks the way it does. Could he budget, or filmmakers’ inexperience with the Volume.

The two aren’t mutually exclusive. You can do a lot with a smaller budget and the original movie is proof of that. The issue isn’t that they’re doing a lot with a low budget, it’s that it looks like they’re doing less than they should with a high budget.

The visual qualities of RO are not about having a huge epic battle : it’s how to shoot everything with a sense of wonder which is what made SW so special. Comparing both approaches of a same idea (the Vader castle scene) really is cruel for the tv show. It’s nice to have little moments such as Ben and Leia wandering in the desert, granted. We had the same thing back in 1977 and it looked more interesting. SW is spectacular by essence. We are mostly missing that with this show, and most spectacular attempts kinda fail (Reva going wannabe Smith in Blade runner city for example).

Also let’s keep in mind that ANH doesn’t look cheap and never was a low budget production.

I actually found it rather refreshing to have the confrontation between Obi-Wan and Vader take place in some small village near a typical back-water mining operation. Not every battle has to take place in an amazing setting.

And I have to say I really like the character development, and the slower pace that allows it. Leia is one of those rare kids that’s highly intelligent and wise beyond her years, and her force sensitivity probably gives her additional insights. And we’re getting to hear a lot of Obi-Wan’s private thoughts about the force, how he misses his friend’s, the Jedi Order, and how hard it can be to be caught in the middle of a huge war with so much responsibility placed on one’s shoulders, and so on. And Ewan is just excellent as Obi-Wan.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

I think it has less to do with the location and more to do with how it was shot. Like the shots of Obi and Vader actually clashing felt almost fan-filmy. Hard to put my finger on it.

I do agree with the character stuff though.

Full disclosure I never watched either The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett. I kept meaning to watch the former, but just never managed to get around to it, and other than 1 or 2 arcs of The Clone Wars I never much cared about Fett as a character so didn’t really have an interest in seeing his book anyway. So my first experience with the Live-Action Disney Star Wars Shows is this one. As this thread shows there are a lot of mixed feelings about this show. I kind of understand what people are talking about when they say the series looks cheap. I think cheap is the wrong word, but more that it seems a bit off. Specifically, it’s the CG. It’s not well integrated and looks obvious whenever it shows up so it looks off. And it’s only ever on Tattooine the way everything else looks is great.

I’ve also only watched episode 1 so far, and while I’ve read a ton of complaints, so far I can’t say agree with many of them. I agree that sometimes the show looks cheap for lack of a better term and that there are some issues with the Inquisitors. I mostly like them, but all of their scenes last too long. Specifically, when any of them is making a speech they pontificate for like a minute too long, and it would be more impactful if their scenes were cut shorter. I don’t know why people are complaining about their acting, or that the characters are often against each other. The acting throughout the entire show, except for maybe that one Jedi and a few scenes with Leia is fantastic, and the Inquisitor’s infighting makes sense to me. They’re Sith and constantly trying to shore up their own positions by putting their coworkers down which feels like a really Sith thing to do.

My biggest complaint is that episode 1 is around 5-10 minutes too long. They should have shifted the Jedi dying to before Leia got kidnapped and ended the episode right where the Organa ask Obi-Wan for help. Don’t get me wrong I like the scene between Bail and Ben, but nothing after Obi-Wan discovers the dead Jedi is needed. Every other scene other than the reveal that Reva is behind the kidnapping isn’t necessary and I think that episode could just be the opening of episode 2 instead. If they just tightened up the Inquisitor’s scenes a bit and ended the episode in the right place I’d have no complaints other than how the series sometimes looks. As it is this is the only live-action Star Wars show, that I’ve actually been excited about and so far it’s met my expectations. Maybe my thoughts will change with episodes 2 and 3 but so far I think the show is really good if a bit slow. However, given that the show seems to be more introspective it feels intentional.

I think it’s the location + the lightsabers. They’re literally just facing off in an Earth quarry. And the way the red and blue light spills illuminate the scene and behave - the sabers actually look like the glowstick props they are.

Watched episode 2 and I don’t have much to say about this episode. I liked that this episode was faster-paced than the first episode, and most of the episode works really well, but again I feel like this could have been 5 minutes or so shorter. I don’t really like the extended action sequence of Leia running away, and Reva parkouring on the rooftop and feel like it could have been removed entirely and it would improve the episode. It feels like action for the sake of having action and I’m not a fan. If I was to edit this show after Obi starts to try to comfort Leia about Lola I’d remove the chase sequence and cut to the High Inquisitor seeing that Reva has sent a bounty out for Obi-Wan, then I’d cut to the scene of Obi-Wan and Leia meeting Haja and continue with the rest of the episode. I’m really enjoying the show so far though, but I’m starting to think that this would have been stronger as a 2 or 2.5-hour movie than as a full 6 episodes, and I’ll definitely be checking out some fan edits of the show once it’s over.

This.

I don’t mean to come off so negative about the whole show. I do like lots of it and I do think it’s better to have a more pared down story that isn’t overambitious, and is more character focused. Arguably, a lot of people wanted the show to be even more like that and just be an introspective story about Obi Wan on Tatooine with no Vader (not directly anyway,) something more like the Kenobi novel. The only point against doing that would be that they just did Book of Boba Fett which was way too much Tatooine.

That’s my concern, not that it’s less bombastic and more character driven, but that it’s not focusing enough on the main character. It keeps cutting away during parts that I want to see more of, and adding more and more stuff about Leia and the inquisitors.

Saying that Star Wars is too centered on Tatooine is like asking why books about World War 1 and World War 2 keep talking about Germany.

I really wish we didn’t have Obi-Wan and Vader duel, but I really liked seeing a younger Vader in action.

The first part of the episode was excellent. I like that we’re getting a universe that looks lived in again and Ewan and little Leia are just great.

I don’t really get what people mean by saying this looks cheap overall. There are a couple scenes that stick out like a sore thumb (Leia running through the woods, the far shot of the big fish in the desert, Vader in the McQuarrie lair on Mustafar, etc.) but on the whole, I think most scenes look movie quality. Maybe it’s just that I’m watching the show on my laptop, or maybe my brightness is too low. I don’t know. I’d love to see some screenshots or something that illustrate what the heck people are talking about.

This series looks and feels like a KJ Anderson 90s EU project brought to life.

I thought the portrayal of Vader was well done. Ewan is boring as Obi-wan and is essentially playing TLJ Luke it seems.

Overall I am enjoying it mostly because of the cheesy 90s feel. But don’t mistake this for a quality product.

Is it? It plays a big role in ANH and TPM, but it’s very arguable whether the movies were actually centered around Tatooine - at least TPM - cause Naboo and the space/Death Star settings mogged Tatooine in both of them. None of the other movies were centered around it. In fact, the best prequel (ROTS) and the best original (ESB) had the least to do with it, so maybe it’s time to take a hint.

The difference being that discussions of WWI and WWII have to include Germany. Star Wars films after 1977 do not. They do only because Lucas had writer’s block trying to pen any sort of story after the only film he had written or planned in the 1970s. He’s the one who has tied us, unfortunately, to The Solar System Far far Away.

I didn’t mind returning to Tatooine in RotJ, since the “return home as a changed man” is often part of the hero’s journey. And it made sense for Anakin to be from Tatooine, since that was implied in ANH. I wouldn’t mind Tatooine being so often revisited if other planets were similarly fleshed out, but they haven’t been.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

I’ve finally caught up to the latest episode, so here are my thoughts:

  • With 3 episodes left, it’s very unlikely this will be the last time Vader & Ben faceoff. The last time they meet in this show, Ben will have regained his old confidence & skill (probably due to a visit from Qui-Gon), and he will be the master in this duel.
  • Third Sister is angry most all of the time, but there’s depth there (since she’s obviously one of the Jedi kids from the opening)
  • The other Inquisitors are a little over the top, but it works for me
  • The moleman was obviously great
  • The kid playing Leia is fine. She acts like a precocious child, which is what she ought to be. Not always perfect, but often good
  • Vader’s entrance was a little over the top. Okay, he’s scary, we get it. On the other hand, I loved the castle. Cheesy? Yes, but just the right amount.
  • That one shot of the bowels of the Probe Droid Launching Facility was weird and bad
  • I hope we don’t actually see Vos, but it was a nice Easter Egg

Sounds probable yeah and given what we have seen so far in reflection of Yoda’s ROTS assignment it could add up.

About the Grand Inquisitor maybe it has never been the one from Rebels and that this one is appointed off screen between tv series or at the ending of this one so continuity with Rebels could be secured.

I reckon he’s just not dead. There’s no way they’d have this guy be a different character yet just happen to sound and look similar to the Grand Inquisitor in Rebels.

Random point: I love how Vader looks in this scene. I’m not sure why but it reminds me of how he was lit in A New Hope. Does anyone else see it?
