Was this ever scanned?
Was this ever scanned?
Not yet but it will be.
[ Scanning stuff since 2015 ]
Did someone actually get a hold of a decent print to scan or is that wishful thinking?
I wonder if someone will ever find a print with the original Mono mix.
The print I believe is here just needs to be scanned.

someone shared their own scan of the original 1973 cut on myspleen yesterday, though unfortunately it’s only 480p

why on 480p? It is sourced from lower quality materials?

Someone gave a theory that it was a telcine transfer created before HD home video was a thing but I’m still skeptical

If anyone could link me this I’d love to see it! Don’t have access to myspleen unfortunately.
“Blessings of the state, blessings of the masses.”
interesting, there’s a 480p transfer on the spleen claiming to be the 1973 version, is that from this print? Perhaps it could be used as the source to created a despecialized version of American Graffiti.

It’s a bit too beat up for that, with some dropped frames and some…interesting optical borks. It definitely looks like it was made in the mid 70’s, though for what purpose is anyone’s guess. It’s definitely the original edit - it’s even got the same tag for the Universal Studios Tour that’s on all of the original posters. My best guess is that it was a quick and dirty scan made for tv broadcast with the cropping left up to whoever was showing it.
For all its problems I frankly love it - the movie looks so much better with a high grain count and colors that don’t pop off the screen. It’s almost Michael Mann-esque in the way it’s fascinated with how a certain city looks at night.
That’s impossible, even for a computer.

The Spleen can go suck a fuck.
35mm print would be best. 1080p or 4K scan. Would it ever happen? That’d be neat.

The one on myspleen is a 35mm scan, it’s just 480p

That’s fucking hilariously stupid that it’s 480p, not 1080p or 4K.

Considering that the scan was made almost 40 years ago, I’m not sure what more you’d expect. Certainly don’t know why you feel so committed to shittalking it.

The scan doesn’t even look 40 years old

There are some optical issues that simply would not happen on a remotely contemporary scan. It looks like a very old telecine with damage of its own rather than issues from an old film print (the print itself looks pretty good - all the visual issues aside from dirt and grain seem to be the fault of the scan being in poor condition). And the print is almost certainly pre-1978 because it has the same advertising tags that were on the original poster.
That’s impossible, even for a computer.

Could it have been transferred using sub-par homemade equipment?

That was my first assumption, that it was someone’s quick and dirty homemade scan, but watching it pretty much blew away that idea. The print is (was) in terrific shape and I’m 97% certain that it was a fresh theater print at the time it was scanned. All the damage and dropped frames looks like the fault of a telecine that’s long past its prime.

Could someone share the scan? Just found out about the original cut a couple years back and didn’t think it would ever show up.
Fathom Events and Universal Pictures are celebrating George Lucas’ 1973 coming-of-age tale American Graffiti on Sunday, August 27th and Wednesday, August 30th. Recently remastered and including a brand-new sound mix, the film cruises back into theaters with a trio of special screenings.
^ That’s great stuff. American Graffiti is in my Dad’s Top Five favorite movies and I love it too so we’re planning on going to that.
Also, the 4K Ultra HD is confirmed for next month in five countries but not the USA yet. (source: blu-ray.com) I’m not sure why it’s saying France in November because everywhere else including Amazon.fr says August. The other four countries are releasing in August.
I hope there is also a restored Blu-Ray and not just 4K. It would be a shame if its like Indiana Jones and they just reissue the same one as before. It that is the case i’ll stick with my laserdisc.
