Thanks. 😃

I know, not always most the reliable source, but it claims during the casino sequence (I think) in part one…

‘There is also an extra scene featuring Willie Nelson’s rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Always On My Mind” featured in television screenings, but not on the DVD version.’

Hmm that doesn’t sound familiar to me, and I’ve seen both versions in the past. However I’ll give it a look / listen. The Wiki entry reads as though it’s an extra scene, not just a music change. It would be unusual for a scene to be added to a syndicated 2 parter as they normally need to trim them for timing rather than add to them 😄

I’ve just viewed the casino scene on the broadcast and there’s nothing there that’s not on the Blu-ray, and there’s definitely no “Always on my mind”. I think that’s a red herring.
I have to say though, that this brings back memories of a TV version I had recorded a long time ago, where scenes were missing, and some were all out of sequence, in particular around the time where Michael had fallen asleep at the wheel. If I come across this on my VHS tapes at some point (which is doubtful to be honest) it might have that scene!

I appreciate you checking this for me. It’s quite possible that it could be a red herring, Wiki is prone to inaccuracies.

It’s been decades but I’m certain that when the pilot aired on Thames TV in '83, it was the TV movie version rather than a two parter. Yes I have memories of watching the Tuesday 7:30pm episodes on ITV. I also have memories of the channel 5 milkshake repeats, and even have a few of them still on VHS with the Milkshake sections.

I spotted on another forum that Spike channel showed out of sequence “The Scent of Roses”. Interestingly, it featured the stereo soundtrack.
Fingers crossed if/when we get to season 4 all the episodes will feature a stereo soundtrack 😀

“Knight of the Juggernaut” part one aired on Spike yesterday.
Unfortunately, yet again a mono soundtrack.
I’m beginning to wonder if the stereo track for this one (and possibly “Burial Ground”) are lost forever!
“Burial Ground” should be on in a few days, so I’ll check that and update again.

they seem to be stereo after ep3 (on spike) are any of HD versions in stereo anywhwere?

Not that I have found. The NBC player on the US site has stereo tracks, bar the 2 listed above though. It’s possible with a bit of time to sync a stereo track to a bluray rip… 😉

No stereo track on “Burial Ground” Spike repeat. Now a long wait for when/if Forces TV show it.
Not looking hopeful though…

I’m running out of places to check for both of these. Might need to see if there’s any foreign channels broadcasting the series (without dubbing obviously).
Anyone able to help with that?

Or if anyone has some off air recordings in stereo… Please get in touch. I’m sure we could sort something out that would be mutually beneficial 😃

Warning: LONG POST ahead (but hopefully might be of some vague use to you, Baobab Archiver)

I’m a bit late to the party with this one (in fact, I’ve just signed up to this form purely to post this), but as a hardcore ‘A-Team’ fan and a pretty hardcore ‘Knight Rider’ fan, as someone who has multiple recordings of episodes from countless sources (and no life!) and is part way through ‘re-assembling’ them into 'as broadcast versions, thought I’d wade in.

Before we start I don’t yet have any Blu-ray sets as I don’t own a Blu-ray player; I though I’d never want/need one as I stopped watching telly a few years ago, and in terms of TAT/KR I have the DVDs and countless TV versions to suffice. It’s only when I saw the quality of these TAT/KR remasters that I’m considering buying one. However I have browsed the Blu-ray versions of affected episodes on various (ahem) probably not that legal streaming websites to assess what’s there and what’s not. I also watched (and recorded!) TV for the first time in some years when they started running TAT/KR, both the see ‘which versions’ they were showing (hey, I’m a nerd), but also to grab a few bits I needed for ‘repairs’ (which I generally already had but where useful as backups).

In teams of A-Team edits:

  • ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ was edited out on both the DVD and Blu-ray releases as well (note this) as the version. currently shown in the UK by Channel 5/5-Spike/Forces. It is dubbed over with generic stock music, and looses a few seconds of footage of Murdock singing along. Note further that the Blu-ray version and current TV version, actually edits the sequence even a few seconds more to the DVD version, missing Murdock’s “yaahoo”, an additional shot of the jet, and a line from Murdock after Face has got his attention. This is likely to try and smooth the edit out, as the DVD version does rather crash in to the dialogue after the edit.
An old UK VHS release had this music intact; I also have various old ITV recordings, and a (ropey) UK Gold recording, with this footage still in.

  • ‘A Small and Deadly War’ - the brief few seconds footage of Murdock singing is RESTORED on the Blu-ray/current broadcast. An old UK VHS release had it missing, as the did the DVDs. I never was sure if this was due to slight damage to the master tapes or for copyright issues - I suspect the former, as it is featured as a flashback, intact, in the second season episode ‘Curtain Call’.

  • ‘When You Comin’ Back, Range Rider?’ - The TV 2-part versions and initial Blu-ray versions use a horribly trimmed version (as does the Pilot and all other 2-hour episodes). They later replaced the Blu-ray with the complete original version. The damaged line from Hannibal is due to master tape damage. Both the current TV and earlier BluRay version actually skip this scene, immediately after the brawl, for timing reasons; I haven’t seen the complete BluRay version as yet to see if the damaged line is present or not. I have an early ITV repeat of this episode (missing some other scenes!) and various other with it intact.

  • ‘Cup A’ Joe’ has ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’ replaced with generic background noise for the sequence. This is on the current Blu-ray version.

  • ‘Beverly Hills Assault’ - a cover of ‘The Heat is On’ and ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’ both replaced on DVD version with a generic jazz number. The Blu-ray restores ‘The Heat is On’ but ‘Dedicated…’ is still replaced. Note that I haven’t checked the current TV versions of these episodes. (As always, I’ve got old ITV/etc. to patch in the original).

To note also with ‘The A-Team’ remasters (and this is getting nerdy, but I like everything to be EXACT as-originally-broadcast) is that some of the opening credits sequences and closing ‘Stephen J. Cannell Productions’ sequences are from the wrong episodes.

Primarily for the opening, this is for the third season. The opening credits originally contained the text ‘Created by Frank Lupo & Stephen J. Cannell’. About a third of the way into the season this was removed and instead place in episode (following the ‘Written by’ and ‘Directed by’ credits). Some current versions (and some previous TV versions) have these jumbled up - often the Created by credit will appear both on the opening sequence and IN the actual episode.

Regarding the closing Stephen J. Cannell productions sequence, as you’ll know there were a few used over the course of the series, but the BluRays / current TVs in a number of instances, use the wrong one for the wrong episode. I could probably list these off if you’re THAT bothered.

Also of note is regarding the third season episode ‘Showdown!’. The master of the music score track of this episode seems to have got quite badly damaged at some point. It is fine on the DVD version, but on the BluRay/current TV, about a third of the way into the episode (around the point of the start of the second act) it becomes noticeably ‘wobbly’, like an old tape recorder where the batteries were going! This also puts it out of sync with the picture and at a few points - noticeably during the make montage at the rodeo, it is edited to jump forward to keep up with the picture! Even more of note is the closing credits… the current TV version uses the correct original closing version, albeit still out of sync with the picture; but the Blu-ray version uses the wrong version of the closing credits theme (the alternate “pumped up” one sometimes uses in the third season)!

Returning to the subject of ‘wrong’ opening credits, the fifth season actually had a number of slight variations to the opening credits (and I don’t just mean the first episode episodes of the season which didn’t bill Eddie Velez). I actually logged these differences many years ago now on my long-defunct A-Team site. Different episodes use a few different shots (and sometimes in different places), as well as the wording Robert Vaughn’s exact billing varying a bit. I haven’t seen enough of the new Blu-ray/TV versions yet to compare these.

The Blu-ray versions have a number of the opening trailers missing which is very disappointing (and I’m assuming, the current TV versions, as from what I’ve seen these are often missing, although back in the day channels would often lop these off for timing reasons, so who knows). On the DVDs, the fourth season on Region 1 had a number of them missing but the Region 2 version had them all intact (despite this being vice versa on, I think, the first season DVDs).

Onto ‘Knight Rider’ (still awake?)…

I’m a pretty hardcore KR fan but can’t reel the exact songs used in episodes so freely off the top of my head. The list of music replacements given sounds about right though. As regards to ‘Always on My Mind’, of the MANY versions of the Pilot I’ve seen/got (old ITV versions, Channel 5, original 1980s VHS releases, later 2000s DVD releases, etc.) I’ve never seen this and have no reason to believe it exists. However, I do recall the song being used in another episode. I’ll try and track it down for you…

Opening credits variations:

The first season DVD versions very much used one generic first season opening credits sequence after the Pilot, and for many of the episodes this served as incorrect.
The original broadcast versions had billings “Also Starring Edward Mulhare” “Patricia McPherson”; about halfway through the first season, this was amended to “Edward Mulhare” “Also Starring Patricia McPherson”. The DVD versions use only the latter version. (I’ll have to sit an pin-point at which episode this originally changed on original broadcasts). Additionally, the exact positioning of the opening narration and sound effects (some versions had more sound effects than others, with the gunshot sounds, jet exploding sound, and more sounds of KITT generally appearing through the season) varied on different episodes. …Maybe I’ll have to sit and draw up a list of this too (sits and foams at mouth).

Additionally regarding the first season opening credits, ‘Deadly Manoeuvres’ (first episode broadcast after the Pilot) does not originally have the opening narration, the only episode after the Pilot to lack it*. It is not present on the DVDs, but on the current TV version it is incorrectly there (to be confirmed if it’s there on the BluRay versions or not).

    • The episode ‘Not a Drop to Drink’ has this narration, but on the version that was repeated by ITV and later Channel 5 in the 1990s, it is lacking it.

In terms of the slight different versions of the second season opening credits, I assume you’re thinking about the positioning of the second half of the opening narration, which varied different episodes (becoming more decided a few episodes into the season).

I do have the rare ‘proper’ opening credits sequence of ‘Knight of the Drones’, both from a watchable but not crisp ITV recording (from an adjoining ITV region when mine didn’t rerun it, so picture quality about 95% acceptable), and from the Channel 5 broadcasts (crisp but a bloomin’ channel logo stamped on!)
I can confirm that the DVD version of ‘Drones’ is the unedited feature-length version (albeit with wrong opening intro), and the Blu-Ray uses the cut-down two-part version (initially, at least, unsure if it’s like TAT where replacements can be obtained).

In terms of Knight Rider, I have literally just a couple of old ITV recordings, later 1990s ITV recordings season 1-3 (for some reason they, nor Channel 5, reran the fourth season) from adjoining ITV region (LWT opted not to rerun the series in the mid-90s, all of mine are from Meridian which would vary with weather but typically %95-%99 quality… wow that takes me back, the lengths I’d go to, to make recordings), as well as all of the Channel 5 ‘Milkshake!’ recordings (plus DVDs).

Don’t forget regarding KR that the first two seasons were also edited into horrible 23-minute (half hour) versions (apparently to fill the gap left after ‘MASH’ finished in the States, very popular half-hour programme which they could resell into a lot of markets). ITV ran these butchered-beyond-comprehension versions following completion of their initial first run of KR circa 1987 (would vary depending on ITV region); they were later also repeated by Channel 5 in various slots. I only have a couple of these remaining, I decided I didn’t want them as they were so hacked up (in an age when videotapes were at a premium) but actually now wish I had kept them just for interest of comparison.
(As an additional (yawn) “fun” note, when Thames TV showed the latter stages of the fourth season, by which time ratings of the series had dipped, the showed the last few episodes on Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:15pm, edited into two-parters! The played these last few episodes out before beginning with the butchered US half-hour versions).

Regarding the ‘Back to front’ scene in the Pilot, I have a repeat broadcast of the Pilot from Thames TV in about 1990ish, where this is indeed the case. Michael leaves Devon to set off in his mission, driving along at dawn, suddenly cuts to Michael being asleep, music playing as KITT tries to wake him up etc., cuts BACK to KITT talking for the first time and the ensuing sequence, drive off, then cuts BACK to Michael being asleep again. Unsure if this was like it in the previous two airings of the Pilot, I’d wonder if ITV’s version of the Pilot got damaged and they ‘reassembled’ it incorrectly, or if it had previously been trimmed for time and they had inserted the scene back in the wrong order (both of which I have seen in imported shows of the era on other occasions!)
When the series was first shown on ITV in 1982, it was in the original feature-length format. (Note though, that each region showed the series and selected episode in their own time-slot throughout the course of the run, and it’s likely that not all ITV regions broadcast the Pilot on the same date).

One of my longest posts anywhere ever (I’m lying, no it’s not) but hoped some of these trivial notes might be of use when re-assembling the series. And that’s before I even get STARTED on my reassembling ‘Magnum, p.i.’ and ‘Airwolf’ and the edits and different versions on THOSE series!! 😃

Wow that certainly was a long post, but very interesting!

I’ve read it twice to try and take in everything you’ve mentioned but will probably need to read it a couple of times more!

Your knowledge is incredibly impressive - certainly far greater than mine, and arguably the most comprehensive I’ve come across to date (and you’re up against some stuff competition!)

I’m not opposed to tackling credits differences, as my goal is to get the most accurate recreations of the series original broadcast. One thought though, which might be complete rubbish… Is there a chance the original UK broadcasts differed to those in the US? I.e. Could the credit difference be due to this?

I’ll leave these differences to one side for now, as I’m interested to read your (and other readers) thoughts on that.

Back to the more significant changes…

A-Team

Currently I have the VHS release with the complete Jumpin’ Jack Flash scene, but unfortunately it has macrovision and I have no means of getting a decent quality capture onto the PC. Shame as the tape playback seems to be of a high quality for VHS.
I have an off air recording of the Cheeseburger in Paradise and Dedicated follower of fashion sections of the relevant episodes but again, not a perfect solution as the quality is average at best. If you have recordings of these scenes that were made with a NICAM VCR (or any other digital device) I would be VERY interested in seeing if we could sort something out.

Finally, the missing pre-credit teasers can be recreated using audio from the DVD releases of season 3,and the season 2 teasers that a kind person from this site has already shared. The video can be taken from the episodes themselves, unless there are any cases where the teaser contains footage not used in the actual episode.
This task is on my to do list, but will take some time to complete, so I am reluctant to tackle it just yet, as sods law they’d release a US set with them all intact just after I finish!!!

Onto Knight Rider…

I have a very promising lead for obtaining the last two stereo tracks I need for season 4 (Knight of the Juggernaut and Burial Ground). Not sure if they’ll actually surface, but watch this space…

The 2 parters on the Blu-ray have indeed been changed via a disc exchange programme, as with the A-team set. That gives you all of the 2 parters uncut.

Again, I’m interested in tackling credits differences, but it’s way beyond my knowledge to spot the differences! Depending (as already said) on people’s opinions on credits differences, if you feel you have the desire (and patience!) I’m happy to do the editing where possible, but would need to know the following:

A) The episode name and details of the part that differs.
B) If the sound / video exists in another episode, then the name of that episode.

To be honest, cases where the credits are over a part of the episode itself are unlikely to be fixable by taking from another source, without a drop in picture quality, and then I really have to weigh up if it’s worth it. If it’s a case of adding one in, it might be possible if the font can be matched, but airbrushing one out that shouldn’t be there is a different matter!

Look forward to hearing your thoughts

A brief update - not good news I’m afraid!
The source I had for the missing stereo episodes sent me his captures yesterday. Unfortunately, even though the VHS tape box had the stereo box ticked, the actual content appeared to be mono. Now I’m not sure if this is because the actual broadcast was mono, or if the recording was incorrectly labelled as stereo.
To clarify, I’m sure the information provided to me by the contact was genuine, just the tapes didn’t contain what he believed they did.

Anyway, the hunt continues.
PJ-1978 - I can see you haven’t been here since your original post, but if you do revisit at some point, please can you get in touch if you have any recordings of these 2 episodes that were made using a NICAM VCR. Thanks!

Again, I am also happy to look at the minor credits differences, but don’t have the ability to calatogue them since I don’t have access to original recordings. If anyone wishes to provide the summary of these I can see what is possible.

To Baobab Archiver:

I joined just so I can thank you for doing your restoration. I am in the US and was hoping to get the uncut Knight of the Drones that they sent you on the disc and any restorations of the music in the episodes you put them back in. For the most part here in the states, they decided anything with Mellencamp and Prince wont get clearance which is why we got thrown a syndicated episode instead of the correct one (which is still incorrect because K.I.T.T.'s features are supposed to be hidden which defeats the whole point in watching you idiots!)

I have seen every original episode of the series in its first run, so hopefully this will help you with information you might not have known.

Knight Of the Phoenix did have an introduction on NBC. You can recreate it with the video and lifting the audio but its missing kitt’s headlight scene not found in the episode if I recall. So if you want to be technical you would need to restore that to HD in front of Knight of the Phoenix.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiQSMcmQtq8

Goliath also has the incorrect teaser because the teaser was a product of NBC, the unaired teaser was generated by Universal. The correct one aired on NBC hyping up the showdown. Probably could be recreated but the audio itself is horrible.

PS Huge Star Wars fan btw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKlZYLuczjg

The audio is a bit better here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUOe9G1Sl8U

Not sure about rules here, but please let me know how I can work to obtain your work. Thanks in advance.

Also it appears that Burial Ground and Knight of the Juggernaut are probably only in mono.

As for the A-team I would love to get the UK Blu Ray but had no idea how good the quality was, what was missing and how complete it was. At least for Knight Rider you have three releases, Japan, UK and US on Blu Ray. Right now no plans to release A-Team in 1080 here in the states…

I am beginning to wonder at this point exactly what is going on with Knight Rider and Universal. On Peacock, White Line Warriors does not have any replacement music but Knight of the Drones, Dead of Knight and Give me Liberty still do. I wonder if the music may now be cleared, but they are not always using sources with the cleared music. I have the original season 1 dvd for Give my Liberty with all the original music, have now heard White Line Warriors with all the original music on Peacock, but every source of Dead of Knight seems to be missing one song. The UK Blu-ray has Little Red Corvette restored in Knight of the Drones. In different points of time all the music seems to have been cleared except for in Dead of Knight. At lease I have not found a complete source as of yet. I hope someday they clear it for release together, but the will probably not.

Where are you seeing Knight Rider on Peacock? I’ve just checked the app on Sky and done a general search for Knight Rider and can’t see it anywhere at the moment.

It’s pretty unlikely but worth checking. If you need any help to check how to easily identify if they’re stereo or not just let me know.

Could be dual mono

Yeah as SpacemanDoug saying it is probably dual mono. You have to actually listen to it to be able to tell.
If you want me to help out with checking drop me a PM but given it’s the 2 part version I think it’s even more likely it’s dual mono. Appreciate you checking though 😃
