Here’s a cool example of a small change making a big impact. Out of curiosity, I reversed the shot of R2 standing over Leia during her death scene, which makes the end of the shot the reveal of her limp hand. Small change, huge difference, and something I only thought of after staring at it for a month wondering why it wasn’t quite working.

I’m hoping the fact that it’s raining upwards in the background isn’t too noticeable, because I absolutely love this change.

It’s not super noticeable. I was looking for it specifically and there was maybe 20% of that shot where you could tell it was going in the wrong direction. But we’d seen it fall correctly in the last two shots so you would REALLY have to go out of your way to pick that nit.

Good job!

“That’s not how the Force works!”

How far away from camp is Rey training that it’s sunny there and raining for Leia 🤕 (this works great otherwise!)

From what I can tell from what the movie shows us,the cave has its own ecosystem.

In seriousness, it seems to always be raining/dripping or something inside the cave.

Here is the speeder chase scene in its entirety. I wanted to keep the “They fly now!” line from 3PO, and remove references to “Never underestimate a droid” as that scene no longer appears. It wasn’t quite as simple as just cutting those bits out though, as the whole flow of the scene was changed.

I had to flip flop a shot of Poe’s speeder and Rey’s speeder right after 3PO’s line. I also had to change the shot of Rey when we cut back to her as it was originally a wider shot. It was unclear which speeder we were looking at because the shot goes by so fast. So now that shot is a close up of Rey. I also threw in a light Sith Whisper when Rey sees the ship to give her a reason to stare at it.

Then, the usual tremendous amount of audio rework to get the scenes to flow into each other.

He could just be referring specifically to FO troopers flying, not troopers in general. And nothing from the Clone Wars matters because 3P0’s memory was wiped by Bail Organa at the end of RotS.

The only problem I’ve ever had with the line was Finn repeating it as a question, like he wouldn’t know. That implies more heavily than anything that FO jet packs are a very new tech in TROS, which EU lore will probably disagree with at some point. If only 3P0 says the line, I think that’s fine, as I don’t imagine he’s seen the front lines often during his time in the Resistance.

I’m doing my final video render now. After that, a little audio tweaking and it’s good to go. I think I’m going to record a commentary track as well.

If you want to see the completed version, reach out Sunday, May 1st.

Late to this response but anyway to be fair, Finn worked in sanitation and the impression TFA gives is that he was strictly ground team, it’s very likely that in an organization as large as the First Order is, he could’ve just never heard of it.

So I noticed in your clips, Leia’s lightsaber is back to blue? Is that true in the final version?

Either, very excited for this. Rey Nobody is essential, and I think you found a great way of not having Leia be in it.

Absolutely love the Death Star Duel change.

Hey! Yeah, I did switch it back to blue. The main reason was that I’m not using the Force Ghosts bit at the end, but also I actually like the visual of Rey and Ben standing together with blue sabers. I theorize that’s why they did it in the first place. I know it’s what she wanted, but the purple saber never really looked right for me.

I appreciate the enthusiasm for this edit I’ve received so far. And thank you to those that have reached out about it!

The edit is now listed on the IFDB. If you have watched the edit, I would ask that you spare a few moments to leave a review there.

It’s not just so I can get your feedback, which I absolutely want. The more reviews something gets on IFDB, the more visibility it gets. The reviews help spread the word!

Cross post, here’s my review from FE.org:

You have to appreciate a big swing. Spence has admitted that he doesn’t usually edit films he really dislikes, and it’s an understandable position to have. With something like TROS, if you changed everything you didn’t like, you might not end up with anything at all. Spence’s approach is kind of along those lines, taking out as many offensive elements as possible before the wheels go flying off and the whole thing falls apart.

Working from Hal’s solid base, Spence does the admirable (arguably necessary) job of cutting out Rey’s Palpatine heritage. Further focusing it on the new characters, he also kills off Leia in the first few minutes. We’re left with a movie that matches Spence’s intent - carrying on the character arcs where TLJ left them off. The question is, how much of a movie is it at this point? The first act is the toughest part, where Spence is really ambitious in terms of reshaping the narrative. I think the narrative he creates is clear, although perhaps a bit too rushed - no fault of his own, considering the original was too rushed to begin with. Things fall into a more manageable pace once the heroes reach Pasaana, but overall, it still feels a bit empty. I’d argue though, again this is the original film’s fault. While some of the running threads have been cut out, they were entirely empty threads to begin with, so nothing of substance is lost.

Ultimately, while the drastic cuts overall make the film feel a bit clearly fan edited, it’s a compromise I imagine many would be willing to take. The film isn’t magically great now, but it is a fun time, where you can watch it and see the hanging plot threads of the trilogy tied up without having to deal with any of the most egregiously offensive moments of the theatrical. Or, at the very least, you can get a sense of how things could have been better had they designed the film a bit differently. A highly recommended watch either way.

So I’ve received some wonderful feedback so far that will inevitable find it’s way into a version 2 of this.

Can anyone thinking of a line of dialogue from Palpatine where he says either “find” or “bring me” from anything?

I figured out what was causing the surround panning issues and have fixed it. I’m uploading new versions to replace the old versions.

If you already downloaded it, I have also uploaded the Ac3 file on its own so you don’t have to get the whole thing again. You can just use MKVtoolnix or a similar program to replace the audio track.

The Ac3 track on its own has already been added to the folder, the updated versions of the movie should be on there later.

I want to note that this is NOT a V2 of this edit, it’s the same as the one I released last week. It’s just got a new audio file that greatly improves the surround sound panning.

All versions have been updated with the fixed audio track. Again, the audio track is also available on it’s own if you just want to remux it to the version you may have already obtained. It’ll work for any of the sizes.

Now that that’s been solved, here’s some stuff I’m doing for Version 2:

  • The little bit of old crawl text that snuck into the background has been eliminated.

  • Palpatine’s line about killing him and passing on his spirit has been moved back to the end of the movie, where it originally took place. This clarifies Palpatine’s plans a bit more, but also makes Rey seem less clueless. I have reverted his line at the beginning back to the “unnatural abilities” thing he originally said. The editing around both of these scenes is a little less choppy now because I could retain more shots of Palpatine.

  • The color/brightness/contrast of Leia’s death scene is adjusted to better match the daylight scenes with Rey. I can’t do much about the rain in the background, but it can be assumed this is just water from inside the cave. It at least now looks like it’s roughly the same time of day.

  • The transition from leaving on the Falcon to Kylo and the Knights of Ren flying to the Star Destroyer has been reworked to be a little less sudden.

  • Some tweaks to the dialogue replacement in the Force Bond fight to give Kylo more purpose in the scene, beyond taunting Rey. It’s not much, but it’s a little more context and makes it feel less rushed.

  • I put the initial reaction to Hux being the spy back in. I still hate it, but cutting it just makes it feel disjointed. Can’t win 'em all.

  • Rey’s line about finding and destroying Palpatine has been removed. The idea was to make her intentions a little murky, but it didn’t really work. Also, murky intentions aren’t a particularly “Star Warsy” notion, especially for the main character. Now she hears the Sith whisper and reacts to it, which triggers Finn to try to comfort her.

  • The transition from Ben on the Death Star to Rey on Ach-To has been reworked to be a bit smoother.

I’ve received feedback on some other things as well, but I’m not changing everything that’s been mentioned. Some of it I’m fine with as-is, and some of it is a deliberate choice that I like. I want this to be the best it can be, but I also want it to remain “The Spence Edit.”

I’m certain that a lot of the work from this is going to find it’s way into future fanedits. I know HAL9000 is doing a Rey Nobody version of Ascendent that will incorporate a lot of the things I did here, just as I used a lot of the work from his edit for this. That’s the fun part of Star Wars edits. We borrow and steal from each other to make new things. If there’s something I did here that I’m not intending to change that irks you, by all means, borrow and steal!
