Babyhum,

What about the other stuff I sent you?

I'm going to be sending you some more star wars stuff soon...along with some Indy

Fantastic. I can't wait. The next releases will probably be DigitalFreakNYC's Special Edition EPK, Ash595's Magic & Mystery and my own Omnibus captures.

But, please be patient.

I didn't think it needed any corrections. Is there something you think I should do? Extras are more than a possibility. Maybe 'Tatooine or Bust'

BH-Thanks for all the work on your releases, but I was wondering why you author your discs with PUOPs? I end up having to run your releases through Shrink to get rid of them. Is there some reason why you do that?

PUOPs = "prohibited user operation," or "PUOP" flags
(i had to look it up, not sure what the last 'p' is for...)
none

I do on mine too. Is it that big a deal?

You're losing resolution by doing that. DVDshrink re-encodes everything.

It's just something that the studios do on commercial discs as a means of control, which I find annoying. I don't really see why a home made disc would contain them-fan made DVDs are also about wresting control back somewhat. Maybe I'm just strange, but I like being able to skip unecessary portions and go straight to the menu. As far as shrink causing loss, I didn't notice anything but then again my setup isn't exactly top notch.. good but not wonderful. I'll keep in mind for the future.

That's not necessarily true, as DVD Shrink has a 'No Compression' option, which means it'll just de/remux everything without re-encoding the video, so the quality will remain untouched. That way its just reauthoring how the disc is put together, without altering its contents.

I too like to alter the prohibited user setting on Babyhum releases, although I use IFOedit to change the PUOP settings (no lengthy reauthoring required).

Here's some info I've culled from the net:

I recently finished one of my first authoring attempts with ReelDVD. Everything went fine apart from one annoying thing. I can’t set the 'Prohibited User Operations' on my animated DVD menu in ReelDVD.

So I downloaded IfoEdit(V0.91 and V0.95) and located the PUOs ( VMGM_PGCI_UT ) and changed them to block out Stop, Pause etc. But when I preview the DVD in IfoEdit and PowerDVD I can still access the blocked out PUOs. Don’t know what I am doing wrong here. I am no expert at IfoEdit or indeed the technical side of DVD so it might be something really simple I am missing here. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks
You can disable/enable selected Prohibited User Operations options in your menus (VTS_*_0.IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT /PGC-Menu_*) or in your video title clips (VTS_*_0.IFO / VTS_PGCITI / VTS_PGC_*). Options checked means they will be disabled and viceversa for unchecked. Press OK to exit options and you will need to save your IFO too. I have no problems in doing it this way in IFOedit 0.95 and PowerDVD.

Thanks for your help 2COOL! I had only set UPO in VTSM_PGCI_UT. But when I did the same in VTS_PGCITI it worked! Yipii! I have no idea what exactly I just did, the structure of the .IFO files are a mystery to me. But hey, as long as it works Are there any good documents on the net about the .IFO files?...

This last one took a while to discover, but setting the title playback type to '60' restores full freedom to navigate the disc. Babyhum usually has this set to '21', here's rough explanation of some of the effect different values have (and where they are located):

Video_TS.ifo
VMG_PTT_SRPT
title playback type - 21 [15] = prohibited user op. Time play or search: both yes
title playback type - 85 [55] = prohibit PPT no, prohib Timeplay search yes
title playback type - 60 [3c] = prohibited user op. Time play or search: both no"

Just to prevent this thread becoming an authoring/PUOP/DVD Shrink thread, I put in PUOP's to prevent for example chapter skipping to the next title which doesn't necessarily give the most professional presentation. That may sound anal but that's the way I present my discs. I never block the top menu button though, so you can always return to the menu I intend you to. PLUS there is a NO-COMPRESSION option in DVD Shrink. The only people I send original discs to are the kind people who post them for me. If you are downloading the titles then reencode them then burn them. That way you don't waste any media.

I've just uncovered some more old recordings. I've found the two Omnibus specials from the BBC which I recorded on SVHS.

<snip>

Are these the two Omnibus did regarding the making of Episode 1, and George Lucas in general, as it would be great to see these again - unfortunately my copies are on long-play VHS so are worse than yours!

How did you get hold of a library copy from the BBC, and would they supply on Digi-Beta

Yes these are the episodes you mention. No the BBC will not release a Digibeta to the general public. I think the only way of getting hold of a copy in that format is by knowing someone in the BBC library who doesn't mind running off a copy without logging it.

Hey Baby Hum, I was able to copy BH006 to my Harddrive, but now the disc gets crc errors so I can not make a SFV file from the disc. So I was hoping that you could tell me if these are the correct checksum for BH006.

i think it's shitty media being picky with certain drives. I hope Metallaxis has more luck with his bh008. I'm off abroad tomorrow for 3 months so i can't replacements to you. Try another drive.

Yeah my Pioneer DVR-110D had problems but switch to my girlfriends laptop that has what ever and both BH007 and BH008 did just fine, so all problems solved.

The early versions of the DVR-110 had known issues with discs using the CMC MAEG01 (or something similar to that) dyes. Might be why you're gettign the errors. Not sure if theres a firmware upgrade for it yet.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, Bulkpaq brand is the only one that has ever given me problems.

Me too. I'll be avoiding them like the plague in future. Good luck with your Science Of... releases by the way. I've got the HD sources and was going to release them as regular DVD's but you'll probably beat me to it.
And a big thanks for the Usenet postings!
