We finally have a release date for the new 4K/HD master of Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director’s Edition, releasing April 5th on Paramount+ with a disc release later in the year! Produced by the orignal team, this release is very exciting, and I can hardly wait. Obviously the new master will have different creative decisions with regards to how best update the old CGI, (from the trailer, some of it very nice and some is quite iffy) but irregardless, the general quality of the new edition should thoroughly exceed my old fanedit and will be the one to watch. This project will still remain up for posterity, but for first-time viewing, I will direct you to what hopefully will be the definitive edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The trailer looks awesome! I am still hoping to finalise my hybrid cut. There is even a possibility that the scene in Engineering with Scotty and Ilia might be in the outtakes as it looks like they found the soundtrack!

Can someone please spell out specifically what the differences are between the Director’s Edition and the Purist Edition? I’ve read the readme files for both, and absolutely nothing about specifics is given with respect to each’s build. There is only general ideas and concepts, but nothing to establish what content is either in or left out of either version.

TIA

The movie itself was the DE with a slight tweak to the opening credits to include Grace Lee Whitney, I think. I think it was more that it was composited using HD footage from the only existing version - the Theatrical Cut - where possible with maybe some colour correction. The new version coming out in September has had the new DE special effects recomposited from the original so everything should be crisper. I want to do a hybrid cut re-adding in scenes from the Theatrical Cut and the SLV so that should be a fun challenge trying to upscale and colour correct the SLV so that it doesn’t look too weird in comparison.

Thanks for the info. Once you start developing your hybrid, if you need a beta-watcher, by all means let me know. I’ve previewed several items in the past for various users and many were thankful for the feedback that I gave. If not, I understand. I look forward to your project.

I have never shared my full version as it was mostly Electric Triangle’s awesome version anyway with extra scenes clipped in so I have only ever hosted my specific hybrid SLV and Deepfaked scenes on YouTube. As far as the remastered DE goes, I think it’s important for fans to buy it to justify all the effort they have gone into before any fan edits come into play.

I will be working in HD not UHD as I have no UHD TV and I doubt I could get the SLV scenes to look ok in UHD in any event.

Still when you look at the same scenes over and over, it can get tricky to spot imperfections, especially with lip syncing, so a fresh set of eyes might be useful. I have used The TC Bluray as the base for Kirk’s close ups in the Memory Wall (pasting the SLV space suit over the TC space suit where possible). Even though I can spot imperfections with the masking, I lack the skill to correct them in After Effects. The close up Janice Rand in Kirk’s quarters has probably taken 1,000+ hours of experimentation and it still looks a bit shoddy! Thanks for the offer.
