Small details that took you FOREVER to notice in the Star Wars films — Page 20

Yes it is tension. You’re just clinging onto the way you saw the film as a child and refusing to see it from any other perspective.

No, I just think the prequels are crap for a multitude of reasons, screwing up Anakin’s fall is one of them. No tricks prequel defenders use have really worked on me and I’m a guy who grew up with the prequels! They’re still terribly executed movies, and yes, I believe Clone Wars makes them a much worse experience. That Anakin is much more believable as the person talked about in the OT and as the future Vader.

No they weren’t. Also, “tricks”? That’s a weird label to put on someone else’s opinion and perspective. I’m sharing my much more positive perspective on the prequels because I think they’re great. It isn’t deception.

And TCW Anakin is exactly like ROTS Anakin before his nightmare, down to his confidence in battle and flying, his tendency to give into his darker emotions, and rapport with Obi-Wan.

TCW wasn’t Dave Filoni’s pet project, it’s George Lucas vision. It’s as much of a child of Lucas as it is Filoni, if not more so.

Oh, I know. I just don’t buy any of the prequel defenses. I appreciate the perspective, but I ultimately disagree with it.

I beg to differ, as I find TCW much more convincing in portraying Anakin as the character Obi-Wan talked fondly about.

Could’ve fooled me. I’m still not a pro-Lucas guy and never will be, nor am I pro-Disney. I’m just a bit of an OT purist and tend to reject most stuff in this godforsaken franchise outside of the OT. Heck, I’d happily throw ROTJ away sometimes.

The whole “Release order vs. Chronological order” debate could really be a thread in itself. I’d read that. In fact, I might start one.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

Can’t speak for BedeHistory, but I feel like a lot of defenses of the prequels have little to no basis in the movies themselves. It’s like they’re doing Lucas’s work writing for him. The prequel fandom is less a fandom around these three movies and more a fandom of the internet headcanon these movies spawned. Which isn’t a crime or anything, and movies are subjective anyway so it’s no big deal. But it makes for an unconvincing defense and it feels a lot like a hack or a trick.

I’m sure I’ve said something like this to you before in a not-super-friendly way, sorry for that

Well, that’s the sequel fandom, too.

Pretty sure there’s at least one thread about that already. Maybe take a look around before creating a new one (check the index threads to see if one is listed there).

That can be true sometimes, like the whole “the Jedi order was corrupt” thing (the Jedi are allowed to love, according to Lucas, what’s wrong is attachments, or possessive love), but a lot of prequel defenses can also literally be things from the films and what Lucas has said. Like David-Talks-SW on Quora (who I’ve actually learned a lot from), all of his answers are from Lucas and the films. Like what I said about Anakin’s turn. There are many quotes from George, which you can even hear if you listen to the commentary, that say that Anakin was just really scared to lose Padme, it was because of his fear of loss, he had a tendency to give into his darker emotions in his personal situations, that the whole “the Jedi are evil thing” is really just him rationalizing his actions, that him becoming a Sith is intentionally framed like a pact with the devil, etc. Here’s one for example:

“You can love people, but you can’t want to possess them. They’re not yours. Accept that they have a fate. Even those you love most are going to die. You can’t do anything about that. Protect them with your lightsaber, but if they die they were going to die. There’s nothing you can do. All you can do is accept that fact.
In mythology if you go to Hades to get them back, you’re not doing it for them, you’re doing it for yourself. You’re doing it because you don’t want to give them up. You’re afraid to be without them. The key to the Dark Side is fear. You must be clean of fear, and fear of loss is the greatest fear. If you’re set up for fear of loss, you will do anything to keep that loss from happening, and you’re going to end up in the Dark Side.”

I’ll admit I’ve been wrong sometimes (like when I said Yoda changed between the prequels and the originals; he didn’t, he was just put in a no-win situation by Palpatine: https://www.quora.com/Did-Yoda-realize-what-went-wrong-with-the-Jedi-What-did-he-do-to-make-sure-his-mistakes-were-not-repeated/answer/David-Talks-SW?ch=17&oid=290173934&share=cc3d380b&srid=RmE0J&target_type=answer) but I’ve learned a lot more about the prequels and I still stand by everything I said here (and on other things like my “OT Vader is emotional” and midichlorians thread).

During the last scene in ESB Mark Hamill pronounce Tatooine as “Tahtooine” rather than “Tætooine” as most people do.

Have most of us just been saying it wrong all this time, or did Hamill just flub his line? He does give a little pause before saying the name as if he struggled to remember his line.

Does anyone with a better memory than me know how many times the planet name is actually spoken by characters in the OT? I only started thinking about this after Temuera Morrison pronounced Tatooine the same way in the new The Book of Boba Fett promo.

Isn’t that the only time it is spoken in the OT…

I remember Mark Hamill saying that line again in the radio drama version of Empire, but in that, he pronounces it “tat-ooine” like I’m used to.

I just realized that Return of the Jedi probably doesn’t mean Luke. It means Anakin going back to being a Jedi when he saves Luke and kills the emperor at the end.

That’s why the title is brilliant. It can mean either of those things. Or it can mean the Jedi, in general.

Pretty off topic but I came across another design inspiration from ANH, apparently one of the droid designs is lifted straight from the cover of a science fiction book as a homage to the illustrator, who worked the concept art for Jodorowsky’s Dune adaptation among other things. To quote the art director from ANH;

“In Star Wars, there’s a robot in the line-up with the sandcrawler when they’re buying R2-D2 and C-3PO… I did do a homage, because I felt I should, to Chris Foss, because he did some very early designs for that and he was always a favorite of mine. So I made one and designed it up out of scrap as if it might have been in a Chris Foss painting, and that was my homage to him, because I always thought he was a genius as an artist.”

Very cool! I’ve always called that thing “the Star Wars droid,” because the yellow lines on it remind me of the Star Wars logo

Speaking of Bond, I like how Octopussy’s credits are the who’s who of Star Wars.

The only one I recognize is Jeremy Bulloch.

Seriously though, maybe it’s a simple matter of figuring out what film ILM had done around the same time or prior to ROTJ it could have come from?

Boa is Rieekan, Le Parmentier is Motti and Crowley is Madine. Those at least.

Thanks! You see, I don’t usually pay attention to the credits unless I’m torn on who’s playing one character or another, so I knew there were others, they just weren’t coming to mind.

During the Death Star escape/Falcon turret scene for a second you can see the eye of the first TIE Fighter pilot that comes in.

For some reason it’s possible to hear someone coughing in the transition from Queen Amidala telling Palpatine she’s leaving for Naboo and that the “Republic no longer functions” over to the Jedi Council chambers in TPM. Don’t know how I’d never noticed this before, lol.

I watched Return of the Jedi last week.

When Boushh shows up with Chewie and Jabba offers her 25K, then she demands 50K, I always thought it was Jabba trying to stiff her (with the original reward being 50K). But on this viewing I understood it to be that the original reward was 25K and Boushh was trying to inflate the reward price.

Maybe everyone else already interpreted it that way.

The Imperial March is played subtly for a split second and you miss when Yoda tells Obi-Wan he fears grave danger in Anakin being training.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas
