I don't know if wood would work for ESB, but I'd be curious if something similar could be come up with, who knows ....

The wood Star Wars looks GREAT. Great choice of fonts and crinkled paper and everything, really class.

We REALLY need a better scan of that alternate poster for Empire now - it's infected my disc art and now it's infected your cover too! A lovely design, but the image itself is so low quality it's just not worth printing.

I think there was a copy of this poster at USC actually - they had alternate posters for Empire and Jedi signed by George and the crew, including the pink Vader Empire one and the powder blue Death Star exploding Jedi one. Maybe they didn't have this particular Empire poster though. Is it out there? Who can scan it?

Some minor notes on the text on the back, if you can make some quick changes.

Empire: Should be a space between Clive and Revill. Guess the cat's out of the bag on what the easter egg is!

On the black ones, the font isn't quite working for me. It's very much the kind of font I would use, but usually on the back of DVDs (like the official ones) you'd see a kind of sans serif font, if you can make that look classy, I don't know ... Also the opening crawl text I'd like to see in a slightly different style to set it apart from the rest of the material. Or maybe the problem is that there is too much text and no images or visual style or metal rivets and whozits and doodads, or whatever.

On the back of the wood Classic Edition, the text repeats basically the same thing twice in a row .... so let me rewrite it. Here -

Journey back to 1977 with this faithful reproduction of the original version of Star Wars.

Lovingly restored to its original form, CGI "special edition" elements have been eliminated, and a new soundtrack created from the 35mm stereo mix and the rare 1977 mono mix.

Relive the magic with the film that started it all, the way you remember it. From the editor that brought you Deleted Magic.

How's that?

I like the idea of the stamp on the Classic Edition wood front, but it'll take some getting used to as it really stands out, where a more subtle rendition wouldn't.

Am I crazy, or in the wood version, didn't the "Star Wars Classic Edition" logo on the back originally have a more smudgy woodburning type effect on it? I liked that, if true.

It would be nice to post all of these without text as well, for those who like 'em that way.

Now, for the questions.

>> can't wait for classic edition return of the jedi.

There's a good chance of that, if Moth3r gets his version out anytime soon. =)

>> Any chance on a deleted magic strikes back, or return of deleted magic?

Probably not, but anything is possible. I said that Deleted Magic was the first in a series, but so little actual deleted footage has been leaked from Empire and Jedi that it was hard to make it worthwhile.

There is a good chance that at some point in the future I will record voices (once I can find good actors for, say, Leia and Obi-Wan and etc.) and recreate certain major deleted scenes myself, as small featurettes that people will be able to use on their future releases of the trilogy.

>>when you do return of the jedi is there any way you can put an alternate title crawl recreation for revenge of the jedi?

Uh ......

Never thought of that. Maybe someone could do one. With the release of Revenge of the Sith, I think that whole title strand has been played out though.

>> what the best software for the pc to watch both ntsc and pal or reauthor pal in ntsc?

You can watch PAL discs on your computer normally. Many, many DVD players also play PAL. I've used my AKAI and Philips machines for PAL playback.

I've got a pre-rendered Revenge of the Jedi crawl on my computer. Maybe if anyone wants it for a for a bonus feature or something. It'd go better on a bonus disc though. I would love to see the Classic Edition of Jedi. So long Hayden. Stoopid poser. Too bad we get back the blasted Yub Yub song. Man, I hate that thing.

HERE is the fixed wood one.

As far as the text and font for the others... that is why I rarely use anything for the backs. LOL! There is usually too much or too little to say and you end up having to revolve the art around the text. There is so much text involved that squeezing if photos etc would make it look even worse. That is where I chose the serif as to let the text draw you in, rather than a dull font to not take away from any images that may be used. I may have to trim down the description a bit, but being that I didn't write it makes me not want to take away from your description of your own work. I am a big fan of keeping it simple... but these are your covers more than they are mine. They display your work more than showcase my own. Let me know if you want less text and pictures, or just a non serif font to replace what I have already.... I hope I am not being difficult! I just want to make sure that I give you exactly what you are wanting. These disks and your work is well worth it!!

Classic Edition no text
Classic ESB no text

You make a point. Perhaps some battle-damaged metal, kind of invoking the Rebel base on Hoth?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Or snow. Like snow and frost covering the whole thing.

That would make for a great cover.

So ..... I sent out the first wave of discs today, a bunch of 'em. Those of you who've asked for 'em, should have 'em shortly.

I sent out some big packages (non SW related) to Britain, which cost me $35-40 apiece, bringing my total cost of postage to $130, plus I had to buy some new shipping materials which was $80 at Staples .... leaving a $200 cost and my bank account $130 overdrawn. Sigh.

Yes, please sue me George Lucas because I'm clearly making a lot of money off of these things.

Shudder.

But it's all for the good o' the community. Enjoy your discs everyone! I'm proud of this release, it was hard to do and I hope you like it.

I don't know if this will help at this point, but here's a high res scan of the ESB international style A poster. I scanned a Japanese chirashi for a cover that I made a while back. You'll need to crop and edit as needed.

THAAAAAAT's more like it!

Much better.

Although this is clearly an alternate, inferior version of the poster actually. It took me a while to figure out whether it really was a different version or if I was just imagining things, but the painting isn't quite as good in some parts in this version, suggesting that this is an early version before changes were made and certain parts of the poster fixed. I hope it's an earlier version - otherwise someone just did a really bad job of retouching it for no obvious reason! (Which might happen in Japan ...)

Most noticeably, Luke looks bad in this version. The low-resolution version shows a better likeness of Mark Hamill (low resolution as it is), whereas this one looks pudgy and bug-eyed.

There is less detail at the top of Bespin, it's just painted blue without any crystal lighting effects.

Lando was also repainted a bit, especially around the eyes, giving his expression more subtlety and definition.

The little "starburst" at top right is more awkwardly paintined in this version where in the other it forms a perfect circle and is yellower. The shadows at the bottom are also less defined, as are the shadows on Han's face.

It would be possible to Photoshop this version into something closer to the final version of the poster - it'd take some work and skill though.

It's excellent to have ANY version of this poster in high quality, many thanks. I'll do somethin' with it!

EDIT: Hey, an idea - does anyone have the photos that those painted images of Lando and Luke were based on? It would make good reference if I'm going to try and fix this poster.

Actually, this is the original version. It was done by Japanese artist Noriyoshi Ohrai.

Just a thought, but this poster really doesn't fit in with the whole "the way you remember it" theme anyway. It wasn't used theatrically in the US (or UK for that matter) so it wouldn't be remembered by most of us. Besides, I think something a little more special is in order. Coov's wooden style D cover has really raised the bar.

It fits with the concept of "not using the same damned poster again." I know I've seen this poster around as an alternate anyway.

I like the Style D a lot, it's my favorite ANH poster which would be why I used it.

I also like this poster, but I'll have to retouch it in the same way whoever retouched it did, whether they were the original artist or not. Hm.

A quick online search revealed that the poster WAS used here in the U.S., in places like, well, Los Angeles, as it was the Spanish-speaking area/Mexican poster.

Used in Germany, Spain, Australia, etc. Something of a common poster in those areas.

They all seem to have used the slightly retouched version as far as I can see, outside Japan.

Here's a lame alternate from Germany.

Incidentally, 2005 is of course the 25th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, so I'm very happy to be bringing this version to y'all now.

It's very teasing. The internet that is. I mean, there are many low-res pics of hundreds of unique Star Wars posters all over the net, but never any high-quality ones.

You ain't kidding. So that was for the ESB video game? I've never seen that before....though I'm not sure it would make a good DVD cover. Maybe for a Deleted Magic Strikes Back or something bonus feature-ish.

Ah, the hints never stop, do they ....

Lucasfilm and Sansweet and ... I think the guy whose hands are in that picture ... are doing or have done a new book of Star Wars posters aren't they?

I recall something about that from the official site a bit back.

As always, it's up to us to do the scans if we can get 'em ....

That is true, i saw Sansweet on tv a week or so back, touting the book. Its a new hardcover
tome, collecting Steve's fave Star Wars posters. You can watch the video here:

The Star Wars Poster Book

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0811848833.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Book Description
One of the very first Star Wars posters had no images at all—just enormous block letters that announced, "Coming to Your Galaxy This Summer: Star Wars." The rest is history. Now, 28 years later, the 350 most amazing Star Wars movie posters are collected for the first time. This compilation spans the surreal to ultra realistic, the campy to darkly serious: Darth Vader's head exploding in a shower of camera parts; Anakin Skywalker casting an ominous Sith shadow; C-3PO and R2-D2 selling Star Wars shoes; Luke and Vader in mortal battle aboard the Death Star. Classic posters are joined with text by the world's foremost Star Wars collector, Stephen Sansweet, and poster collector Peter Vilmur, behind-the-scenes stories from artists and designers, a scarcity guide to over 2,000 posters, and a bootleg identification guide. Exploding with color, The Star Wars Poster Book illuminates an unexplored corner of Star Wars history.
